The foundation, maintenance and management of a free grammar school in South Lancashire, 1520-1842

Percival, Eric January 1989 (has links)
This thesis is a study of educational administration as exemplified by the foundation and maintenance of a free grammar school in Warrington, by Sir Thomas Boteler, 15th Lord of the Manor of Warrington, by his will (1520), its foundation (1526) and its governance up to 1842, ie to the onset of state intervention in the provision of education in the 19th century. The foundation's regulations established a basic administrative structure of a patron, a body of feoffees, and a schoolmaster. By the end of the 16th century, as a result of despoliation, the School was brought to a "ruinous" state, so that a decree from the Duchy Court of Lancaster (1607-10) was required to ensure its revival. In the 17th century, the feoffees failed to carry out the Duchy Court's injunctions concerning the management of the School's finances which were thenceforward assumed by the masters. This practice resulted in constant tension between masters and feoffees which continued until 1807 when the School's usefulness had so declined that some Warrington citizens, concerned that the foundation's terms were no longer being complied with, gave information from which a bill was filed in Chancery to rectify the maladministration of the Charity. This resulted in a judgement in 1814 which, in 1820, led to a series of rules which were an updating of the foundation's provisions, their most important reform being a revival of the responsibilities of the feoffees/trustees and an insistence on their accountability and documentation. The tension continued between the trustees and the schoolmaster, resulting in the resignation of the incumbent. Overall, the work is a study of the nature and origins of the problems encountered in making and maintaining schools and of the tensions arising from interested parties and wielders of influence who operate therein.

Francis W. Dawson and Daniel H. Chamberlain: a political flirtation, 1874-1876

Law, Lillian Carr January 1968 (has links)
Francis W. Dawson, pragmatic editor of the influential Charleston News and Courier, and Daniel H. Chamberlain, last Reconstruction governor of South Carolina, developed a close working relationship during the years 1874 through 1876. The two Southern emigres had opposing political affiliations. Dawson, a Democrat, bitterly fought both the nomination and election of Republican Chamberlain in 1874. The editor's evaluation of the Republican voting strength in the state nonetheless led him to support a bolting group of Independent Republicans in the 1874 campaign. However, Chamberlain's attempts to secure orderly, peaceful reform soon won the praise and ultimately the complete support of Dawson and the powerful Charleston business community. The remarkable alliance grew and took sustenance from cooperation and compromise. Predictably, both Republican and Democratic partisans sought to topple the two leaders of the cooperation movement. As the election of 1876 approached, Republican malcontents, fired by dissatisfaction with the Governor's reform and economy measures, attempted to discredit Chamberlain. Democratic dissidents denounced Dawson's strategy and called for a “Straightout” Democratic effort in the upcoming elections. Their cause drew strength from the unhappy economic situation and from the recent example of Mississippi's "redemption." In July, 1876, the emotional rebellion against Dawson's program of cooperation climaxed at the village of Hamburg when several Negro militia men were murdered. Despite the editor's ardent championship of Chamberlain and his fervent pleas for the preservation of the alliance, Dawson's plans were swept away. The Democrats, staunchly supported by the realistic editor, went on to a "Straightout" victory with Wade Hampton. The end of the flirtation marked the beginning of South Carolina's membership in the "Solid South" of the Democracy. / Master of Arts

A proposed health education program for the Warrington School at Warrington, Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
The author has tried to emphasize the importance of the health of the school child and of a good health program in the public school. Realizing that most school administrators have very limited knowledge regarding the establishment of a program of this nature, it has been the purpose of this paper to set up a basic structure that may serve as a guide to the school in building its school health education program. Although this is written specifically for the school at Warrington, Florida, it is felt that this program may be of some benefit to other schools that would like to establish a better health program. / Typescript. / "August, 1950." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 38-39).

Les relations franco-tripolitaines à l'époque de Youssef Pacha, entre 1795 et 1832 / Franco-tripolitanian relations during the reign of Youssef Pacha, 1795 to 1832

Matrud, Fawzia 02 April 2013 (has links)
In the 17th century, the seas were dominated by the English and French navies. Just like the English, the French fought to control the Mediterranean sea-routes which represented major strategic world trading routes and they were also the scene of many battles between the different maritime fleets. Quite naturally, in order to control the Mediterranean, a certain level of intervention in the internal affairs of the Mediterranean States was necessary. This led Europeans to seek to strengthen their relations with the Ottoman Empire that controlled the North African Regencies and also Tripoli at the time. Franco-Tripolitanian relations were founded on intense diplomatic efforts and quasi-permanent communication between the two countries, particularly during the reign of Youssef Pacha (most commonly Yusuf Karamanli) and the Tripoli Regency, when the French government played a decisive role in the political situation and economic development of the region. By focusing its activities on diplomatic relations, France considered its incursion as a tool for a Modern state to justify and maintain a fleet off the coast of this state that was, at the time, one of the most powerful in the Mediterranean region. For France, Tripoli was also a gateway for trading activities. Youssef Pacha’s reign was also marked by an element that gave even greater value to Tripoli for the French: the progress made in geographical exploration and discoveries in Africa. Here again, France and England were competing in their exploration of the Dark Continent from Tripoli down. Tripoli also played a key role during the political crises between France and England, particularly during the Napoleonic wars. All the above elements contributed to the creation of high-level diplomatic and economic relations that were built on cooperation, despite certain problems that arose during the period.

Pathways to healing : an empirical-theology study of the healing praxis of 'the group' Assemblies of God in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Thomas, Andrew James 06 1900 (has links)
The study commenced by identifying a theological problem relating to the lack of understanding regarding grass-roots African Pentecostal healing praxis. The empirical-theological approach of Van der Ven was utilised, therefore, to study the healing praxis of an African Pentecostal body, called: The Group‘ Assemblies of God, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Van der Ven‘s original framework was developed by drawing on the hermeneutic and methodological work of Cartledge. A case study was undertaken on a Group‘ Assembly in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The use of social scientific techniques produced a wide range of results that point to the church‘s ministry of healing as a process, rooted in the Trinity, that can occur through varied channels. These pathways ended in a broad understanding of healing. A dialogue between the qualitative results and the healing literature was used to develop a more precise theological question. Case study categories were conceptualised and then operationalised as a questionnaire. A survey was performed on all Assemblies affiliated to The Group‘ Assemblies of God in KwaZulu-Natal. A significant number of people participated in the survey which produced a wide range of data. It is found that worldview and charismatic experience form an important hermeneutic axis that influences attitudes towards the healing ministry. Conservative biblical belief, ethnicity, education and gender influence attitudes towards healing. A distinct divide exists between positive attitudes towards physical, spiritual, inner healing and deliverance and more negative attitudes towards social and environmental healing. The reflection on these results focuses on the perceived influence of American dispensational fundamentalism. The eschatology formed from these beliefs has a narrowing effect on holistic healing ministry. Moltmann‘s transformational eschatology is suggested, therefore, as a suitable alternative. The methodological evaluation finds that several problems exist with regard to research in a rural African location. The cycle concludes by offering a range of suggestions for further study. / Practical Theology / D. Th. (Practical Theology)
