Wastewater Pretreatment System for a Printed Circuit Board Plant

Green, Raymond F. 01 January 1979 (has links) (PDF)
The wastewater from the electroplating processes required for the production of printed circuit boards has a high heavy metal content. The regulatory agencies of both the Federal Government and the State of Florida set pretreatment limitations on the quantity of the hazardous heavy metal ions that may be discharged t o a receiving body of water or to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works. A number of treatment processes are available for the effective removal of these pollutants. The mechanism behind the more common processes are discussed in this paper. Many variables must be considered in the design of a wastewater pretreatment system. The more important variables are enumerated and the criteria to integrate these variables into the treatment selection process and ultimately into the design of the pretreatment system are covered in detail. Flow diagrams and equipment lists for the treatment processes selected are given as well as a breakdown of the total construction costs for this project.

Application of bacterial bioflocculants for wastewater and river water treatment.

Buthelezi, Simphiwe P. January 2008 (has links)
Dyes are often recalcitrant organic molecules that produce a colour change and contribute to the organic load and toxicity of textile industrial wastewater. Untreated effluent from such sources is harmful to aquatic life in the rivers and lakes due to reduced light penetration and the presence of highly toxic metal complex dyes. The use of alum as flocculant/coagulant in wastewater treatment is not encouraged as it induces Alzheimer’s disease in humans and results in the production of large amounts of sludge. Therefore, the development of safe and biodegradable flocculating agents that will minimize environmental and health risks may be considered as an important issue in wastewater treatment. Bioflocculants are extracellular polymers synthesized by living cells. In this study, bacterial bioflocculants were assessed for their ability to remove dyes from textile wastewater as well as reducing the microbial load in untreated river water. The bacteria were isolated from a wastewater treatment plant and identified using standard biochemical tests as well as the analysis of their 16S rDNA gene sequences. Six bacterial isolates were identified viz. Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas plecoglossicida, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes, Exiguobacterium acetylicum, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella terrigena. The flocculating activities of the bioflocculants produced by these isolates were characterized. The effect of temperature, pH, cations and bioflocculant concentration on the removal of dyes, kaolin clay and microbial load was also determined. The amount of bioflocculants produced by the bacterial isolates ranged between 5 and 27.66 g/l. According to the findings of the present study, bacterial bioflocculants were composed of carbohydrates, proteins, uronic acid, and hexosamine in varying quantities. The bioflocculants were effective to varying degrees in removing the dyes in aqueous solution, in particular whale dye, medi-blue, fawn dye and mixed dyes, with a decolourization efficiency ranging between 20-99.9%. Decolourization efficiency was influenced by the bioflocculant concentration, pH, temperature, and cations. The bacterial bioflocculants were also capable of reducing both the kaolin clay and the microbial load from river water. The flocculating activity ranged between 2.395–3.709 OD-1 while up to 70.84% of kaolin clay and 99% of the microbial load from the river water was removed. The efficiency of kaolin clay flocculation increased with higher concentration of bacterial bioflocculants. The optimum pH for the flocculating activity was observed between 6 and 9. The best flocculating activity was observed at 28oC. Divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Mn2+ improved the flocculation while salts such as K2HPO4, CH2COONa, and Na2CO3 did not. The findings of this study strongly suggest that microbial bioflocculants could provide a promising alternative to replace or supplement the physical and chemical treatment processes of river water and textile industry effluent. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.

Estudo de caso: minimização e reúso de água em shopping center da região sul do Brasil

Gois, Eduardo Henrique Baltrusch de 14 October 2015 (has links)
The main issues related to water conservation in urban centers are the increase in water supply cost, demand growth, pollution and differences in the distribution of water resources. Water conservation, the controlled and efficient use of water, includes both measures as reasonable means of water reuse. Thus, conservation practices are an effective way to meet demand and supply water to new activities and users without jeopardizing the supplying water bodies and preserving the natural environment. This study aims to examine the water management of a shopping mall and the use of rainwater harvesting combined with greywater reuse. For buildings in general, water loss is common due to leaks in the hydraulic and restroom equipment. These losses, which are caused by a high volume of water used and wasted in the system, are often the result of design errors, incorrect maintenance procedures and users' bad habits In southern Brazil, where there is rainfall almost all year long, water shortages occasionally occur, particularly in some winter mouths. One difficulty that appears on rainwater studies is the proper determination of rainwater volume that can be used to address water supply systems. In this work, the simulation method was used to determine this volume. Thus, simulations with the following variables: rainfall, catchment area and water consumption were performed. For mall's hydraulic systems, segmented alternatives are adopted. That is, focusing on the use of rainwater or greywater reuse. Other alternatives of effluent reuse have been slightly discussed due to sanitary issues, those are effluents from toilets and kitchen sinks. The adoption of greywater may be feasible if there is a significant flow of greywater to comply water demand for toilet flushing. The inspections made in this study found that the quantity of sinks was insufficient to supply an adequate amount of water to toilets and urinals. The greywater reuse system was found to be infeasible in terms of demand and supply of water. Conversely, the rainwater harvesting system was entirely feasible and easily supplied water to all restrooms and contributed to the cooling of the air conditioning system with a short payback period. One of the challenges of this work was the need to compare the actual water consumption with a water consumption parameter used in buildings. Thus, a method that addresses the generation of specific consumption indexes for specific activity (like a mall) was used. The water consumption indices showed that this mall has a satisfactory water management program.

Validace LC-MS metody a monitoring léčiv ve vodách. / Validation of LC-MS method and monitoring of pharmaceuticals in water samples.

Molnárová, Lucia January 2020 (has links)
Occurrence, accumulation and subsequent fate of pharmaceuticals in environment currently represent a very actual topic. Worldwide, thousands of tons of pharmaceutical substances are consumed every year. A large portion of pharmaceuticals is, in unchanged or metabolized forms, disposed via sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants. Considering the fact that wastewater treatment processes are not able to completely eliminate all active substances or their metabolites, pharmaceuticals are systematically washing out into the water system and increasingly contaminate the ground and surface waters. The problematics of continuous control and progressive elimination of pharmaceutical residues from environment are still not completely solved. Thus, the development and availability of accurate and fast commercial analyses are highly desired. The aim of this diploma thesis was the optimization and validation of multi-residue UHPLC- MS/MS analytical method designated for the determination of 52 pharmaceuticals in drinking and waste waters. The work was carried out in laboratories of ALS Czech Republic. An analytical method was subsequently used for monitoring of pharmaceuticals in both drinking and waste waters, as well as for the determination of efficiency of removing these compounds within the...

A temporal and spatial analysis of China's infrastructure and economic vulnerability to climate change impacts

Hu, Xi January 2017 (has links)
A warmer climate is expected to increase the risks of natural disasters globally. China is one of the hotspots of climate impacts since its infrastructures and industries are often hard hit. Yet little is known about the nature and the extent to which they are affected. This thesis builds novel system-of-systems risk assessment methodologies and data for China, representing infrastructures (energy, transport, waste, water and digital communications) as interdependent networks that support spatially distributed users of infrastructure services. A unique national-scale geo-spatial network database containing 64,834 existing infrastructure assets is assembled. For the first time, flood and drought exposure maps of China's key infrastructures are created, highlighting the locations of key urban areas to understand how its infrastructures and population could be exposed to climate impacts. To deepen the understanding of how climate change will affect the Chinese infrastructure system and hence its economy, economic impact modelling is applied. The research combines a detailed firm-level econometric analysis of 162,830 companies with a macroeconomic input-output model to estimate flood impacts on China's manufacturing sector over the period 2003 - 2010. It is estimated that flooding on average reduces firm output by 3.18% - 3.87% per year and their propagating effects on the Chinese macroeconomic system to be a 1.38% - 1.68% annual loss in total direct and indirect output, which amounts to 17,323 - 21,082 RMB billion. Several infrastructure sectors - electricity, the heat production and supply industry, gas production and supply, the water production and supply industry - are indirectly affected owing to the effects of supply chain disruptions. Taking the above analysis one step further, this thesis explores how climate disaster risks may change over the period 2016 - 2055, using flooding as a case study. A global river routing (CaMa-Flood) model at a spatial resolution of 0.25° x 0.25° is applied and downscaled for China, using the daily runoff of 11 Atmospheric and Oceanic General Circulation Models (AOGCMs). Combining the flood analysis with the infrastructure database, this research demonstrates the changing locations of exposed infrastructures and their dependent customers. We find that by 2055, the number of infrastructure assets exposed to increasing probability of flooding under RCP 4.5 are 41, 268, 115, 53, 739, 1098, 432 for airports, dams, data centres, ports, power plants, rail stations, reservoirs respectively - almost 8% of all assets for each sector. The lengths of line assets exposed to increasing flood hazards are 14,376 km, 32,740 km, 102,877 km and 25,310 km oil pipelines, rail tracks, roads and transmission lines respectively. Under RCP 8.4, the numbers increase to 51, 301, 137, 71, 812, 1066, 424 for point assets. Linear assets increase to 19,938 km, 39,859 km, 122,155 km and 30,861 km. Further, we demonstrate that indirect exposure of customers reliant on those infrastructure assets outside the floodplain could also be high. The average number of customers affected by increasing flood probabilities are 54 million, 114 million and 131 million for airports, power plants and stations respectively. However, within this aggregate increase there is large spatial variation, which has implications for spatial planning of adaptation to flood risk to infrastructure. This is a first substantial study of flood impacts to infrastructure both in terms of direct exposure and their indirect implications. Lastly, to shed some light on the potential vulnerability of China's infrastructure system to climate impacts, this thesis develops a framework that identifies the drivers of infrastructure development in China using evidence from policy documents and a unique geospatial dataset for the years 1900 - 2010. Understanding these drivers will provide a useful foundation for future research in terms of developing infrastructure models that could project the locations of future infrastructure assets and networks in China, thereby quantifying how China's infrastructure exposure and vulnerability will change over time. Overall this research provides an integrated system-of-systems perspective of understanding network and economic vulnerabilities and risks to Chinese energy, transport, water, waste and digital communication infrastructures due to climate change. This is crucial in informing the long-term planning and adaptation in China.

Medição individualizada em edifícios residenciais : controle e redução do consumo de água potável / Individual measurement in residential buldings: control and reduction of the drinking water consumption

Marcos Antonio Arruda Guerra de Holanda 25 April 2007 (has links)
Brazil: a water country. The second part of this work was to follow a telemetric measurement system in a residential building with individual water meters. The telemetric measurement allowed to know the profile of each consumer, individually, as an important way to plan actions to control and to reduce the water consumption.
