Effects of Electromagnetic Hydrolysis on Dissolved Oxygen in Small PondsUnknown Date (has links)
This pilot study was conducted to determine if an Electron Magnetics Oxygen and Hydrogen (EMOH) device can increase the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of a residential surface water. By using EMOH, DO concentration will increase and allow bacteria to remove the substrate that creates blue-green algae for which the City of Boynton Beach (City) receives complaints. Those complaints center on odors and the visual appearance of the ponds. The study was conducted in-situ at the INCA Pond system in the City of Boynton Beach, Florida with data collection taking place bi-weekly, using surface aeration techniques. Water sampling was conducted in the INCA Pond system via a handheld water sensor. Primary variable monitored included: water temperature, barometric pressure, DO concentration, and DO saturation (DOSAT). Biomass of dead algae at the bottom of the pond was also monitored to determine if increased DO concentration aided the biological digestion of the organic matter. Data analysis shows that exposure to EMOH treatment allowed the relationship between DO and temperature to change from a negative correlation (the expected relationship) to a positive trend. Furthermore, pressure and DOSAT became less correlated after exposure to EMOH effluent. In all, EMOH was shown to be an effective means of treating hypoxic pond water. The optimal EMOH effluent discharge is determined to be deep in the subject pond. Backed by research on the surface-air water and bubble-water oxygen transfer coefficients, DO concentration in the subject pond was 110% higher when effluent was directed down toward the floor of the pond. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Protection of potable water supplies demands a better understanding of the factors controlling migration of disease causing bacteria in subsurface environments. In this study, the migration behaviour of the waterborne pathogenic microorganisms Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Yersinia enterocolitica was investigated in water saturated granular systems. Both facultative bacteria were grown under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and further acclimatized to a microaerophilic or fully aerated environment for 21 h. Experiments were conducted using laboratory-scale packed columns over controlled extreme dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The observed differences in the transport potential of these pathogens were found to depend strongly on the antecedent growth conditions under the tested environmental settings as well with the environmental DO in certain conditions. Further microbial characterization using cell titrations and FTIR spectroscopy gave a greater insight on the source of the surface charge that was found to dominate the attachment phenomena in sand packed columns. Techniques also revealed a probable role of other cell surface macromolecules (LPS) that could account for non-DLVO behaviour. The results illustrate the importance of considering physicochemical conditions relevant to the natural subsurface environment when designing laboratory transport experiments as evidenced by variations in microbe migration as a function of the DO under growth and acclimation. / Keywords: bacterial adhesion, bacterial transport, DLVO, physicochemical characterization, dissolved oxygen, porous media.

The effect of clearcut logging and forest fires on hypolimnetic oxygen depletion rates in remote Canadian Shield lakes /St. Onge, Peter Douglas. January 2001 (has links)
Thirty-eight oligotrophic lakes located around the Reservoir Gouin in central Quebec (48°N, 75°W) were sampled over three years to test the hypothesis that forest clearcutting and fires should be reflected in both higher nutrient export rates and ultimately in greater areal hypolimnetic oxygen deficit rates (AHOD). Significant differences in estimated total phosphorus export rates across treatments were found. However, no effect of clearcutting or forest fire on hypolimnetic oxygen consumption rates could be demonstrated as the result of a much greater and confounding variation in the effect of lake morphometry and the absence of information on the role of catchment-derived organic matter on the AHOD. Consequently, only lake morphometry (hypolimnetic volume to hypolimnetic surface area ratio) served as a predictor of the AHOD. Covariation of mean hypolimnetic water temperature with morphometric variables underlines the influence of lake morphometry on heat dynamics and hypolimnetic respiration rates in these lakes. / This research made considerable use of specialized data manipulation techniques involving a relational database management system, owing to the size of the dataset used (114 lake-years of data). The specific approach used in this thesis is presented in an appendix.

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation instabilities during the last glacial cycleZhou, Yuxin January 2022 (has links)
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is thought to exert considerable influence over the climate via heat redistribution and carbon storage. Its repeated variations along with the regional and global climate during the last glacial cycle suggest that the state of the AMOC may be roughly divided into “warm,” “cold,” and “off” modes. The three modes correspond to the vigorous deepwater formation in the subpolar North Atlantic, a reduced deepwater formation, and the widespread disruption of the AMOC, respectively. Questions remain about the cause and response of AMOC perturbations in each of the three modes.Reconstruction of the burial flux of ice-rafted debris can resolve questions about the timing and rates of ice sheet calving, which may have been responsible for the “off” mode of the AMOC, given the association of freshwater forcing with AMOC strength. The first chapter quantified the flux of ice-rafted debris in a pair of cores collected from sites in the western North Atlantic. The results show higher ice-rafted debris flux during all Heinrich events and that the western North Atlantic fluxes were higher than the east. The data demonstrate that the Laurentide Ice Sheet played a role in all Heinrich events.
A catastrophic last interglacial Laurentide outburst (LILO) event some 125,000 years ago (125 ka) may have contributed to abrupt climate change during the Eemian, when the AMOC was in the “warm” mode. The LILO event was previously proposed to be an analog of the Holocene 8.2 ka event. The second chapter investigated the age and chemical compositions of a layer of red sediments deposited across much of the Northwest Atlantic at 125 ka. The results provide strong support for the occurrence of the LILO event that was analogous to the 8.2 ka event in provenance, timing, and delivery.
Little is known about the zonal (east/west) characteristics of the AMOC when in the “cold” mode during the Last Glacial Maximum. Authigenic uranium preserved in sediments is a sensitive redox tracer and can shed light on bottom water oxygen, carbon storage, and water mass distributions. In the third chapter, new and published authigenic uranium data were used to reconstruct deep ocean oxygenation. The compilation shows that lower-than-Holocene oxygen and correspondingly greater respired carbon storage were persistent features of the LGM in the deep North Atlantic. The eastern basin was substantially less well oxygenated than the west. A farther advance and greater infilling in the east of deep waters originating from the Southern Ocean may have caused the zonal difference. Alternatively, deep waters originating from the subpolar North Atlantic may have increased in their residence time in the eastern transect.
Questions remain about the flux of freshwater necessary to induce the AMOC to enter the “off” mode. Existing estimates do not agree on the freshwater fluxes associated with Heinrich events. The fourth chapter uses compiled 230Thxs-based mass fluxes in the North Atlantic during the last glacial period to calculate the surge mass fluxes as a measure of the rate of ice-rafted debris deposition. The surge mass fluxes were then converted into freshwater fluxes. Freshwater fluxes for an arbitrarily defined 2000-year period and total freshwater volumes between 20° and 70° N were as high as 0.11 Sv and 6.9 × 1015 m³ during Heinrich event 4 and as low as 0.0012 Sv and 7.6 × 1013 m³ during Heinrich event 3. The relatively low freshwater fluxes we reconstructed for Heinrich events might suggest potentially a high sensitivity of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation to freshwater perturbations, although the freshwater volumes are in line with previous reconstructions. Our project represents the first time an attempt made to reconstruct the freshwater fluxes and volumes during all Heinrich events of the last glacial period.
