Net Positive Water

Ma, Billy January 2013 (has links)
‘Net Positive Water’ explores the capability of domestic architecture to combat the developing urban water problem. Urban intensification is contributing to the volatility of urban waters and the breakdown of the urban water cycle. Inhabitant water misuse and overconsumption is overwhelming aging municipal utilities, resulting in the decay of urban water quality. LEEDTM and The Living Building Challenge are recognized Green Building Guidelines prescribing sustainable site and building water standards. Case Studies of domestic Green Building projects will showcase water conservation to enable domestic water renewal. Net Zero Water Guidelines based on the Green Building Guidelines outline Potable and Non-Potable water use to achieve a sustainable volume of water demand at 70 litres per capita per day. Sustainable water practices are encouraged by utilizing domestic building systems to increase water value and water awareness. Time-of-Use and Choice-of-Use exposure for household water related tasks establish water savings through the use of best-performing water fixtures and appliances. Net Positive Water Guidelines will establish On-site and Building standards for sustainable harvesting and storage of water resources. Clean and Dirty water management will prescribe Passive design and Active mechanical processes to maintain best-available water quality in the urban domestic environment. Net Positive Water building typology will integrate urban inhabitation as a functional component of the urban water cycle to use, reuse, and renew water resources. The method will be tested using a Mid-rise Pilot project to deploy the necessary Passive and Active mechanisms to generate Net Positive Water quality through Net Zero Water sustainable water use. The pilot project is situated in Waterfront Toronto - The Lower Don Lands development to harness regional interests for water renewal and environmental revitalization.

Brněnské nábřeží - rehabilitace brněnských řek a jejich blízkého okolí / Brno waterfront - rehabilitation of rivers and their surrounding areas

Vrba, Petr January 2017 (has links)
The theme of the diploma thesis "Brno waterfront - rehabilitation of the Brno rivers and their surroundings" is creating an urban proposal in Brno, Zábrdovice, on the eastern waterfront of the Svitava river. The intention is to use the potential of the area and create the possibility of lucrative housing by river with a commercial ground floor, services, leisure time park with a multifunctional playground and easy direct access to the Svitava river. The studied location, has an area of 6.32 hectares andis defined mainly by the Zábrdovická Street and the Svitava River near the former Premonstratensian Monastery, which now serves as a Military Hospital. At present, the location has mainly low-floor industrial buildings with storage and expedition functions. The proposed buildings relate to existing buildings on the east and west banks of the Svitava River. They have the form of four to six storey blocks, which are characteristic for this area. The park connects to the revitalized eastern embankment of the river at the site of a new footbridgethat connects both rive sides and stairs. They provide space formeetings and relaxation, but also serve as a flood control in the event of a water inflow. Along the Svitava River there is a sidewalk with street alleyways and access to the river.

Nová Jižní čtvrť a její propojení s řekou Svratkou / New South District and its Connection to Svratka

Nedbalová, Monika January 2019 (has links)
Brno has been considering moving the Main railway station for several decades. Countless urban plans have been done through several competitions, the new South District, which will be located north direction of today's Dolní nádraží station in the future. The architectural study, which was the subject of this diploma thesis, designs multifunctional object called Platform. The building could become part of the emerging South District. The base for the architectural study of the Platform was urban concept of South District designed by me as a pre-diploma thesis. The significance of the South District is comparable to the new Main Railway Station in Vienna surrounded by new district. Those opportunities were the foundation for designing compact urban structure with great variability of public spaces and buildings themselves. The new building is located on the Route of experiences, which is an alternative lane to the main boulevard from the Main Station to the centre of Brno. That starts at the railway station, leads through South District and its main square, the waterfront, through the islands of Svratka, to the park next to the river. Lane continues to the rediscovered railway viaduct and further to today's Main railway station. The viaduct was an inspiration for the architectural design, in the sense of material and shape. The mass of the building itself is divided horizontally into two parts. The lower, heavy masonry brick part of the market is visually separated from the upper objects that seem to levitate above the market. These three upper masses grow from the green roof of the market. Their function is already evident due to their facades. Upper part belongs to the two apartment buildings with a regular grid of south-west orientated windows and one coworking facility located in the northern corner of the Platform. The location of the building is significant. The views from the Platform are amazing - one side there is the Svratka River with island
