Towards More Efficient Delay Measurements on the Internet

Webster, Patrick Jordan 16 December 2013 (has links)
As more applications rely on distributed systems (peer-to-peer services, content distribution networks, cloud services), it becomes necessary to identify hosts that return content to the user with minimal delay. A large scale map of delays would aid in solving this problem. Existing methods, which deploy devices to every region of the Internet or use of a single vantage point have yet to create such a map. While services such as PlanetLab offer a distributed network for measurements, they only cover 0.3% of the Internet. The focus of our research is to increase the speed of the single vantage point approach so that it becomes a feasible solution. We evaluate the feasibility of performing large scale measurements by performing an experiment using more hosts than any previous study. First, an efficient scanning algorithm is developed to perform the measurement scan. We then find that a custom Windows network driver is required to overcome bottlenecks in the operating system. After developing a custom driver, we perform a measurement scan larger than any previous study. Analysis of the results reveals previously unidentified drawbacks to the existing architectures and measurement methodologies. We propose novel meth- ods for increasing the speed of experiments, improving the accuracy of measurement results, and reducing the amount of traffic generated by the scan. Finally, we present architectures for performing an Internet scale measurement scan. We found that with custom drivers, the Windows operating system is a capable platform for performing large scale measurements. Scan results showed that in the eleven years since the original measurement technique was developed, the response patterns it relied upon had changed from what was expected. With our suggested improvements to the measurement algorithm and proposed scanning architectures, it may be possible to perform Internet scale measurement studies in the future.

Historic windows and sustainability : a comparison of historic and replacement windows based on energy efficiency, life cycle analysis, embodied energy and durability

Ware, Erin C. 09 July 2011 (has links)
This study examines the sustainability of historic windows in comparison to modern replacement windows. A sustainable product is defined as one that lasts multiple generations without causing harm to the environment, either in its production, maintenance, or disposal. Historic windows are perceived as energy inefficient and are often removed and replaced. Historic windows can, however, be augmented to perform similarly to replacement windows. To determine sustainability, window materials were evaluated based on their life span, life cycle, energy efficiency, maintenance, and disposal. In general, historic windows are long lasting and retaining them conserves materials and energy used in their production. Based on the above criteria, historic wood windows were found to be highly sustainable due to their excellent energy performance (with the addition of storm windows), durability (with regular maintenance), and low environmental impact in processing and disposal. / Defining sustainability -- History of windows -- Window materials -- Windows and energy -- Embodied energy and life cycle analysis -- Durability -- Findings. / Department of Architecture

Implementação de uma rede sem fio

Branco, Parahuari Solnowski 07 February 2011 (has links)

A computational fluid dynamics and experimental investigation of an airflow window

Bhamjee, Muaaz 19 July 2012 (has links)
M.Ing. / The characterisation of the flow field and thermal performance of supply air windows (airflow windows operating in supply mode) have been a topic of interest for at least two decades. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as well as other simulation methods have been used to model and characterise the flow field, temperature distributions and thermal performance of the supply air window in recent years. Where experimental validation of the velocity (only outlet velocity) and temperature predictions has been provided the error between experiment and CFD (and other forms of simulation) is in the order of 50 % and 3 ◦C (10-13 %), respectively. Furthermore, a large part of the literature does not have experimental validation of the simulation results. The significant error in many of the studies, that provide experimental val- idation of the velocity field, is attributed to inappropriate turbulence mod- els, unrealistic boundary conditions, neglecting significant three-dimensional effects, solar radiation effects not entirely accounted for, mesh sensitivity studies neglected and material properties of glass and air assumed constant. The aim of this research was to characterise a supply air window in terms of its velocity field, temperature distributions and thermal performance. This was done by mathematically modelling the fluid dynamics and heat trans- fer processes in a supply air window and solving the model in a commer- cial CFD code, namely ANSYS Fluent 12.1. Furthermore, an experimental rig was designed, constructed and used to measure the flow field and tem- peratures with the aim of validating the CFD models. The CFD models incorporated appropriate turbulence models, realistic boundary conditions, three-dimensional effects, solar radiation, temperature dependent material properties and a mesh sensitivity study. The CFD models and experiments were setup for forced and natural flow conditions. Laser Doppler Velocimetry has not been used for velocity field measure- ments in an airflow window to date. The experimental setup made use of Laser Doppler Velocimetry to measure the velocity field and turbulence in- tensities. The Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) probe was positioned using a three axis computer controlled traversing mechanism. Furthermore, flow visualisation experiments were done to qualitatively capture the flow field. The results from the CFD are partially in good agreement with the exper- imental work. Qualitatively the flow field as predicted by CFD is in good agreement with the results from the flow visualisation experiments. Quan- titatively the results from the CFD are in good agreement with the tem- perature measurements, however, there is noticeable error between the LDV readings and the velocities as well as turbulence intensity values predicted by CFD. The error, with regards to velocity and turbulence intensity, may be attributed to the experimental error caused by problems with flow seeding as well as the isotropic turbulence assumption inherent in the turbulence model (SST k − ω) used.

NetPro neural network simulator for Windows

Burger, Dewald 14 October 2015 (has links)
M.Ing. (Mechanical Engineering) / This thesis involves the development of a Neural Network software package within a Windows environment. This package is called NetPro. It contains most of the standard tools used in existing neural network packages e.g. shuffling of facts, automatic test file facts extraction, randomizing of weights values (before and during training), automatic/manual construction of network files, logging of network properties during training, noise can be added to inputs, etc. NetPro has three additional tools: (a) time delay actions on inputs, (b) a neural network calculator, and (c) automatic saving of the best network during training. The calculator is used to calculate the number of training facts needed for optimum generalization ...
