Model-driven optimization of multihop wireless networks

Interference is fundamental to wireless networks. It is hard to achieve good performance when design routing metrics or algorithms without taking it into account. We study interference in wireless networks through empirical experiments and simulations. We find out that current routing protocols face difficulties in effectively managing it, which can lead to severe problems. For instance, a simple network of two links with one flow is vulnerable to severe performance degradation if interference is not properly accounted for. Motivated by these observations, we develop a simple and effective model to capture effects of interference in a wireless network. Different from the existing interference models, our model captures IEEE 802.11 DCF under both homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic and link characteristics, and is simple enough to be directly used as a basic building block for wireless performance optimization. Based on thismodel, we develop optimization algorithms for several objectives, such as network throughput and fairness. Given traffic demands as input, these algorithms compute rates at which individual flows must send to achieve these objectives. We implement these algorithms in Qualnet simulations and 19-node testbed. Our experiment and simulation results show that our methods can systematically account for and control interference to achieve good performance. More specifically, when optimizing fairness, our methods can achieve almost perfect fairness; when optimizing network throughput, they can lead to 100-200% improvement for UDP traffic and 10-50% for TCP traffic. / text

WiMax - a critical view of the technology and its economics

Mobile WiMax and LTE, the latest and fastest Mobile Broadband technologies, mark significant improvements over 3G networks because they use IP (Internet Protocol) end-to-end. To end-users, this means faster network speeds, better quality services, and increased coverage area. To the Network Operators, this means simplified network architectures, efficient use of resources, and improved security. In this report, the different issues and challenges related to deploying Mobile WiMax (802.16e or 802.16m) in rural South Africa, were identifed and explored. In this project, Atoll, SONAR, and Touch Point analysis tools were used to determine which Mobile Broadband technology is economically and technically suited for rural South Africa. It was found that LTE yields superior performance results than WiMax, which in turn yields superior performance results to all other existing 3G technologies. However it will take time for LTE to reach rural areas therefore WiMax can be considered as a solution to extend Broadband services to rural South Africa and thus assist in bridging the digital divide. Recommendations on how best to deploy Mobile WiMax are made based on observations made from the experimental work. / MT2017

Because Ministry of Transportation and Communication want to improve its service quality and increase its revenue, Unite Communication Technology Ltd. (UCT) bring up ¡§BOT of E-Commerce and Wireless Internet¡¨ to built up the service of wireless internet and e-commerce on the train and in the station. Under the project, this thesis address to operate the value-added service of VOIP business with wireless internet to boost the total return ratio. According to data collection and survey, the financial model was erected to evaluate the feasible of this new business model. To sum up the result, the NPV of the project is 50,227,238 in 19 years (the discount rate equal to 6.49), IRR reach to 23.93%, and payback period is 7.415 years. Although the payback period is long, in terms of sustained and stable profit in the future, the project is still valuable. Furthermore, UCT is a telecommunication company so that the project can use the bandwidth more efficiently to maximum the corporation revenue.
