Amor e ódio no caso clínico do Homem dos Lobos / Love and hate in Wolfman\'s case

Grajew, Miriam 07 December 2018 (has links)
The study concerning the impasse which appears in analysis may contribute to a metapsychological reflection which in turn offers elements for a clinical experience, especially in cases where important points pertinent to psychic constitutional issues are present. This allows for a greater knowledge of our basic functioning. Our hypothesis is that the impasse takes place only with the concomitant influence of the patient\'s transference and the countertransferential reactions of the analyst. In studying the case of the Wolfman, one can observe the strong presence of love and hate in the relationship between the analyst and the patient. The repetition of these sentiments were not sufficiently worked through and what remained was a strong tie between the Wolfman and Freud, which lasted for a long time, even after the analysis was considered ended. The implicit feminine position in the homosexual desire with a man astonished Freud who understood that this attitude was the main cause for the resistance in analysis, without considering the possibility that the Wolfman had a desire for castration implicit in the feminine position. Likewise, the incestuous desire for the mother, evident in the bisexuality of the patient, was not sufficiently worked through during the analysis. In exchange, what was established was a relationship based on fascination and idealization, with no space for lack, thus invoking defenses through isolation, omnipotence and the pursuit for the double, in face of archaic anguishes of extinction. There was a passionate alienation in relation to Freud which was the cause of their difficult separation. With the second analyst, Brunswick, who acted as a mediator between the two men, the impasse was broken to a certain degree, and the Wolfman could minimally worked through the attachment and transferences of love and hate, giving him certain independence and the possibility for a way out via sublimation

The Werewolf: Past and Future

Stebbins, Maegan Ann 31 May 2017 (has links)
Since before recorded history, werewolves have captivated human imagination. Simultaneously, they represent our deepest fears as well as our desire to connect with our primal ancestry. Today, werewolves are portrayed negatively, associated with violence, cruelty, cannibalism, and general malevolence. However, in ages past, legends depicted them not as monsters, but as a range of neutral to benevolent individuals, such as traveling companions, guardians, and knights. The robust legacy of the werewolf spans from prehistory, through ancient Greece and Rome, to the Middle Ages, into the Early Modern period, and finally into present-day popular culture. Over the ages, the view of the werewolf has become distorted. Media treatment of werewolves is associated with inferior writing, lacking in thought, depth, and meaning. Werewolves as characters or creatures are now generally seen as single-minded and one-dimensional, and they want nothing more than to kill, devour, and possibly violate humans. Hollywood depictions have resulted in the destruction of the true meanings behind werewolf legends that fascinated and terrified humans for so many ages. If these negative trends were reversed, perhaps entertainment might not only discover again some of the true meanings behind the werewolf myth, but also take the first steps toward reversing negative portrayals of wolves themselves, which humans have, for eons, wrongfully stigmatized and portrayed as evil, resulting in wolves receiving crueler treatment than virtually any other animal. To revive the many questions posed by lycanthropy, entertainment must show respect to the rich history of the legend — and rediscover the benevolent werewolf. / Master of Arts
