Exploring of a succession planning framework for women in the South African aviation industryHoffman, Confidence Lydia January 2015 (has links)
Women globally are seen as key contributors to the economic development and ‘bottom-line’ of businesses, but their presence and representation is still lacking in senior positions and the boardroom. Although after 20 years of democracy, the South African government has made significant progress towards empowering women in all spheres of business, inequalities and imbalances remain huge stumbling blocks. Embracing diversity and advocating gender equality makes business sense; this includes developing women as leaders through effectively implementing succession planning. Research shows that most companies have a succession plan document in place, but whether it is correctly implemented and effective remains to be investigated. A company’s leadership and human resources management together need to create a robust succession planning framework which aligns the vision of the company and talent management. The purpose of this research study was to determine the perceived success of succession planning for women in businesses in South Africa. The study’s primary objective was to develop and explore a succession planning framework for women in the South African Aviation Industry. A detailed literature review was conducted on women in business, leadership and succession planning. A qualitative case study approach was used as the most appropriate research methodology for this study to test whether the six propositions developed by the researcher applied to this single case or not. A questionnaire was developed to be used as a guide when interviewing the female respondents. The results were analysed and based on the findings, recommendations were made for further research. The main finding of this research was that the selected company lacks the correct implementation of the succession planning process. A possible solution to this issue would be the recruitment of a succession planning coordinator who has strong knowledge of the company’s policies, procedures and culture to establish strategies to roll out the succession planning programme.

Women's empowerment in the post-1994 Rwanda: the case study of Mayaga RegionHategekimana, Celestin January 2011 (has links)
This research looks at the process of women’s empowerment in post- 1994 Rwanda, with special focus on twelve cooperatives working in Mayaga region and the way these cooperatives empower women, their households and the community at large. Traditional Rwandan society has been always bound by patriarchy which has not valued the reproductive roles of women as economically productive in their households and the society as a whole. On the one hand, this understanding was reversed in the post-1994 Rwanda by the commitment of the government to gender equality at the highest level of political leadership through progressive policies and legislation. On the other hand, in Mayaga region, cooperatives brought about socio-economic development and changed relationships of gender and power in a patriarchal post-conflict society. The findings from cooperatives in Mayaga region show that to prevent women from reaching their full potential is economic folly. If women are empowered, they can generate important development outcomes such as improved health, education, income levels and conflict resolution. The findings further indicate how women’s empowerment is determined by the livelihood strategies women adopt themselves to respond to their vulnerability, and by the ways in which they express their agency in making a living in a sustainable way, with the available community assets that they have access to (financial, social, human, natural and physical). This research highlights that the accessibility of the community assets used by women in Mayaga region and in Rwanda as a whole is also determined by policies, institutions and processes that are able to influence their livelihoods positively.

Two Essays on Evaluation Challenges in Integrated Pest Management: An Evaluation Design for the Onion ipmPIPE and Identifying Women's Crops and Agricultural TechnologiesSecor, William Glen 05 June 2012 (has links)
The two papers in this thesis are aimed at solving problems in Integrated Pest Management project, practice, and program evaluations. In the first paper, an evaluation design is constructed for the Onion ipmPIPE website, an onion pest information website. The Bayesian decision theoretic approach may not accurately model onion growers' pest management decisions throughout the season. Randomization of the treatment is possible, but an incomplete grower list proved to be a problem. The analysis shows that an instrumental variables approach may be the most appropriate method for estimating the impact of the Onion ipmPIPE website because its data needs are solved by using USDA-NASS surveying services. In the second paper, the challenge is to develop a practical method to measure benefits accruing to women from agricultural research using secondary data. Donors, governments and others are interested in determining how benefits from agricultural research accrue to women. We develop a three-step framework to identify women's crops and technologies. In step one, total potential benefits from research are estimated; step two allocates those benefits between men and women; step three, incorporates technology-specific parameters to refine the estimates of potential benefits. We apply this framework to Honduras and find that steps one and two provide the most information on the magnitude and distribution of benefits, but that refinements in step three can affect rankings of research program impacts on women. / Master of Science

Limits of citizenship : a comparative analysis of Zimbabwean and South African women's citizenship agencyMaswikwa, Belinda 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Developmental initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa emphasise participatory citizenship as the means through which poor women can assert and claim their citizenship rights. Although citizenship and agency are crucial elements in this narrative, little is known about the citizenship process for African women. Furthermore, there is no analytic framework to guide an empirical analysis of agency. This dissertation aims to address these gaps by examining how marginalised Black African women understand themselves as citizens, navigate their structural barriers and develop strategies to negotiate their membership in and relationship with their states.
This dissertation uses a deviant case analysis of women living in Zimbabwean and South African townships, who identify as members of the isiNdebele and isiZulu ethnic groups respectively, to Western theories of agency. Data was collected through the use of in-depth interviews and analysed using content and relational analysis. Results indicate that the women use a range of everyday resistance strategies to negotiate their relationship with their states. These strategies are mapped onto an innovative analytic framework that synthesizes feminist, androcentric and subaltern theories of citizenship agency, in order to highlight the non-conventional ways that marginalised African women exercise their agency as citizens.
Interestingly, both sets of women emphasise the obligation to vote, work and support oneself without recourse to the state, rather than a reciprocal and participatory relationship. The internalisation of citizenship as an obligation without a corollary emphasis on rights and participation is problematic given that both governments suffer from legitimacy, corruption and governance issues. The main policy implication arising from the study is that there is a need for civic education in schools as well as a feature of women‟s empowerment and community development programs so that marginalised African women are encouraged to expand their participatory skills to collectively challenge, contest and improve the substance of existing citizenship rights. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ontwikkelinginisiatiewe in Afrika beklemtoon deelnemende burgerskap as ʼn manier hoe arm vroue hul regte kan eis.

Social development and women : theory and practiceNieman, A. J. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research investigates the social development approach from the
viewpoint of developing an understanding of the applicability thereof in a
social work environment in a South African context.
Based on the level of underdevelopment in the country, the social
development process, which involves a dynamic multi-disciplinary approach
with a strong emphasis on the positive outcomes of growth and
empowerment, is thought to offer a wide range of possible fields of
application.
To provide clarity and gain insight into the dimensions and elements
involved, different aspects of the South African and international scenarios
provide a background for the arguments promoting the social development
approach as a positive intervention for the helping professions.
The purpose of this research is to broaden the field of knowledge for
practitioners and organisations dealing with poverty and deprivation by
providing an extension of options in practice models.
The research report includes an investigation of the elements and concepts
associated with social development, with particular emphasis on the role of
women. Knowledge and understanding of these concepts will assist in
widening the horizons of field workers and assist in deciding on appropriate
responses when faced with the problems of South Africa and its apartheid
legacy.
Development in the South African context is examined with the focus on the
main role players, namely government and the welfare sector. Recurring
themes in development programmes that have been identified as elements for
success are described by means of case examples from good international practice models. The applicability of many of these cases should serve as
stimuli for instituting initiatives in local situations of need.
The empirical research used the qualitative method to examine, by means of
focus groups, the effects of the identified elements in five social development
projects in the Western Cape. The focus groups were conducted with the aid
of open-ended question guides. The findings and responses of the focus group
respondents were analysed and discussed in relation to findings described in
the literature by various authors.
It is believed that the findings of this research can be utilised as practical
guidelines for instituting and running social development projects by social
workers, as well as practitioners from other fields, to address the problems of
poverty and underdevelopment in the country by paying special attention to
the role of women in such projects.
Herhalende temas in internasionale ontwikkelingsprogramme as elemente
