A social history of white working class women in industrializing Port Elizabeth, 1917-1936Gibbs, Patricia Anne January 1998 (has links)
The study period saw a significant increase in the urbanisation of whites and blacks in Port Elizabeth induced by droughts and coercive legislation, but also by burgeoning industrialisation. Industry had been given great stimulus by World War 1 and maintained by protectionist legislation in the 1920s which the local state and industrialists came to endorse. The ethos of the town was overwhelmingly British in terms of the population, the composition of the local council, business interests and the prevailing culture. Whites formed the largest component of the population in Port Elizabeth during the inter-war years. The majority of white women lived in the North End, the industrial hub and a major working class area of the city. Although the provision of housing was initially neglected, economic and subeconomic housing in the 1930s helped to create both racial separation and a sense of community between sectors of the working class. Yet, white working class women did not form a homogenous group, but rather consisted of different ethnic groups, occupations and classes. The Afrikaans speaking sector, formed a significant component of the industrial labour force especially in the leather, food and beverage and clothing industries. In a centre where white labour was favoured and marketed as an advantage to outside investors, they rapidly displaced coloured women. The female workforce was basically young, underpaid (especially in comparison to wages on the Rand) and temporary. While white women were still in evidence in other occupations such as domestic work and in the informal sector, their numbers here steadily diminished as both racial segregation and municipal regulation, were implemented. Against a background of chaotic social conditions, large slum areas and the spread of infectious diseases, the local council did much to improve health services particularly for women and children. Poor relief instituted in 1919 was, however, less forthcoming and female - headed households were often left to rely on the services of local welfare organisations. The extended family, however, was the norm affording support against atomization. Although pressurised by social ills throughout the period, the family was increasingly buttressed by state assistance. Prevailing morality was likewise actively constructed in terms of legislative repression and racial division. This often lead to social aberrations such as infanticide which was only reduced by the increase of state assistance and, in the longer term, social mobility of the whites.

Statistics around the world have highlighted that women are under-represented in decision-making positions, with a specific focus on the academic sector; this study aims to review these statistics and establish which barriers prevent females from progressing to leadership positions.
The target population was comprised of staff members from the Durban University of Technology and ranged from leadership, management, and lecturing, to entry-level employees. The technique of probability sampling was chosen in this research, with a sample size of 100 participants drawn from the population. Questionnaires were designed with both closed-ended and some open-ended questions, and were personally administered to all campuses of the Durban University of Technology, namely Ritson Campus, Steve Biko Campus, ML Sultan Campus, City Campus, Indumiso Campus and Riverside Campus. This study revealed that, although women are still under-represented in Higher Education, there are efforts being made to bridge this gap. This study found female leaders more productive than male counterparts at the Durban University and are able to run their department smoothly and efficiently. The study also found that there are internal respondents agreed that there are hidden difficulties in their department that women face and prevent them from moving into higher positions. Additionally, the study found that there are programs at the Durban University that empower women into leadership.
This study contributes to knowledge of gender-based leadership and female empowerment into leadership positions, in the higher education sector. / M

M.A. / The rationale behind the study of abused women should be a public and not an individual concern. Acknowledging anti considering abuse of women to be unacceptable is not enough. However, the public needs to be further educated as to its prevalence and seriousness. In the present study an attempt is made to redress some of these differences by studying women abuse in South Africa. The most important aim of the research is to understand the ways in which three abused women have managed to have the courage to relate and be honest about their experiences of abuse that they have suffered for many years. The research study will be based on the qualitative research method. The narrative approach will be integrated, whereby the three abused women will tell their different stories of abuse by their husbands. The researcher has found this study to be of utmost importance in contextualising the insight of women abuse although the sample of the three women does not represent all the abused women in South African context.

The participation of rural women in local governance structures in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality since 2013Mathabathe, Pheladi January 2014 (has links)
The rural women in EMLM hew the wood, carry water, satisfy the men, produce and take care of the children to continue the family tree, and manage all the household chores. Their contribution is central to the effective functioning of families and communities. Yet, in terms of decision-making and local governance structures, they are absent. Indeed, there is truly a large constituency of women out there who are largely unrepresented; and therefore, they have no idea how governance is conducted – even around them. This is unfair, especially in jurisdictions where women are clearly in the majority. It is inconceivable that local governance structures have over a decade recorded only a single elected female member. With this in mind, this study seeks to explore the extent of rural women’s participation in local governance in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality. It is a comparison of traditional and democratic local governance structures; and the methods the researcher has used are qualitative and quantitative data on women councillors from 2013, in order to assess the factors that may be accountable for their small numbers, as compared to their male counterparts. The conclusion drawn was that the social structure, its traditions and cultural was identified in the study as the main obstacle to the advancement of women in the political arena. This study has not exhausted all the facets of the challenges; but it has brought a few to the fore, in an attempt to help stimulate debate, and inform policy and practice in the future.

Newlands location need a serious intermediation to address the gender inequality issues.

The aim of the present study explores barriers to women educators’ upward mobility in the Department of Education, using the Butterworth Education District as the area of study. Women as human beings, too, have a valid case regarding recognition of their legitimate aspirations because in striving for them, they are exercising their rights similar to their male counterpart. It must also be understood that the same legislative prescripts apply to both male and female educators and the necessary intellectual and physical capacity plus skills commitment and perseverance are understood to be important criteria for promotions. The question of perception of barriers to upward mobility of women in the education department and the wider public sector in South Africa is topical and continues to engender research and policy guidelines. However, conclusive findings and solutions are far from being realised. Empirical research and other scholarly writings posit that despite a suite of legislation and policy guidelines introduced in South Africa since 1994, women continue to encounter barriers in their effort to move up their career ladder. It is argued women are under-represented in management positions in comparison to men all over the world. Unequal representation of women in public sectors, nationally, provincially and locally has illustrated the need for gender equity and mainstreaming in senior management. In research done for the Department of Education in South Africa it was also found that although the teaching environment is made up of both men and women, men in management are acceptable, but women in management experience problems not only from male employees, but from female employees as well.

I have observed that in Mdantsane there is a clear gap between men and women, as people are tradition-bound, and men are often the breadwinners in their households, which leave some women sidelined and only left with household chores. Therefore this research aims to investigate these inequalities, and if microfinance can contribute positively towards the development of these women, so that they can develop and sustain their lifestyles. Chapter two of this research, containing available literature on this particular study which is sustainable livelihoods and microfinance for poor women, and covers both local as well as international studies. Here microfinance and sustainable livelihoods will be conceptualised accordingly so as to shed light on the subject. The third chapter covers the methodology used in the current study which clearly outlines the methodological framework, the research instruments, participants as well as the research design and procedure. The fourth chapter provides the findings and of the the current study, this will outline the main themes that surface and are prevalent among the participants. Chapter five will consist of the discussion of the results. Lastly chapter six will provide the conclusion as well as well as recommendations relevant to the results of this study.

This study investigates the meaning that women attach to their experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). It seeks to explore how women who have experienced violence in the context of an intimate relationship understand, or make sense of, that experience. It is important to investigate this in order to address some of the assumptions that often inform understandings of the phenomena. Moreover, such information can be used to inform the design and implementation of appropriate interventions. Nine women who had previously experienced violence within the context of an intimate heterosexual relationship participated in this study. For ethical reasons only women who had extricated themselves from those relationships were interviewed for this study. Participants’ accounts were therefore retrospective. The women who participated in this study constituted a homogenous group in terms of their level of education, geographic location and employment status. Data was collected through personal, face-to-face interviews which were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data in the form of text was analyzed following Willig’s (2001) criteria for Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Disclosure of the women’s experiences, how they made sense of their experiences, as well as the resources they identified as available to them are reported in the results and analysis chapter.

Attitudes of midwives towards the implementation of choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act in the health facilities of the O.R. Tambo DistrictNohaji, Essinah Nosisi January 2012 (has links)
The focus of the study was to evaluate the attitudes of midwives towards the implementation of the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act in the O.R. Tambo District hospitals in the Eastern Cape. There was no provision for termination of pregnancy (TOP) for unplanned pregnancy until 1994 when the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy (CTOP) Act was introduced. This act allowed any pregnant woman to request TOP when she wished for TOP. The midwives could voluntarily undergo training in TOP services and the designated institutions started offering TOP services, but stopped at a later stage. This resulted in overcrowding in health institutions which continued rendering TOP services. The researcher posed one question to be answered as: What are the attitudes of the midwives who are employed by health institutions in the O.R. Tambo District in the Eastern Cape Province towards the implementation of the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act? The aim of the study was to evaluate the attitude of midwives towards the implementation of the CTOP Act in the O.R. Tambo District hospitals. The objective of this study was to determine the attitudes of these midwives towards the implementation of these services in the O.R. Tambo District in the Eastern Cape Province. A quantitative descriptive design was used in this study. The population consisted of 150 midwives from two hospitals in the O.R. Tambo District. The sample consisted of 75 midwives; 30 midwives from Hospital 1 and 45 midwives from Hospital 2. Random systemic sampling was used in selecting the participants. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researcher and approved by the supervisor and the University of Fort Hare Ethics Committee. In the study, using a sample of (n = 75), the attitude on the implementation of CTOP scale had high reliability of 0.81. Data were analysed with the help of a statistician using Statistix 8.1 software for Windows. Approval to conduct the study was obtained from the University of Fort Hare Ethics Committee, Eastern Cape Department of Health and Hospital 1 and Hospital 2 before the study was conducted. The dignity of the participants was maintained by explaining v the topic of the research study, the aim and objectives of the study, the method to be used for data collection and the significance of the study. The participants were allowed to ask questions and the name and telephone of the supervisor were provided in case they needed some clarity. Voluntary, written informed consent was obtained before the interviews were conducted. Privacy, anonymity and confidentiality were ensured and maintained through all the stages of the research process. The finding of this study was that the midwives employed by the health institutions in O. R. Tambo District Municipality displayed positive responses in the majority (n=11/61.1%) of 18 items in the questionnaire. Since the midwives in this study demonstrated a positive attitude towards TOP, it was recommended that the reason for stopping the TOP services in the concerned institutions should be investigated. The following are also recommended: Compulsory training of midwives should include aspects of reproductive epidemiology, in particular, the epidemiology of unsafe abortions. Training in TOP services should continue, so that there will be adequate number of midwives to provide the TOP services, and consideration of special remuneration for TOP providers. Employment of managers trained in TOP and voluntary training of managers working in TOP sections should be considered so that they may provide effective support to TOP providers. Formation of support centres for TOP providers at Provincial and National levels. Education of the community in prevention of unwanted pregnancies by means of contraceptives and indications for a need to provide TOP services, to prevent victimisation of the TOP providers. Availability of a toll free number for reporting victimisation of the TOP providers.

Thesis (M.Dev.) --University of Limpopo, 2015 / The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of gender discrimination in water services provision on women empowerment in GaPila Village, located in Limpopo Province. Gender discrimination remains a major challenge both in the labour market and within households. The allocation of resources within households is still much gendered due to unequal gender relations in most rural areas. Men are allocated most resources within households and have many benefits than women. Such also manifest to children. Despite, women being major beneficiaries of the delivery of water services, they are discriminated against as they are not involved with the processes that precede the provision of such services. The study used both quantitative and qualitative research approach to establish the effects of gender discrimination in the provision of water services on women empowerment. The findings of the study illustrated that culture and tradition are the key to the inadequacy of women’s access to and control over management of water services. Cultural practices within communities either ignore female participation in water services management. Their participation is obstructed by lack of time, level of education, low self-esteem and flexibility due to substantial workload and numerous household responsibilities. The study also showed that according to local cultural beliefs, the status of women whether high or low, does not determine the amount of work that must be done by her at home, because irrespective of her status or career placement, her primary assignment is to care for the family/home.
The study further revealed that women in the GaPila Village are allowed access to economic opportunities and participation roles during community meetings. Also, women are allowed to occupy positions such as chairperson, secretary and treasurer; however, due to culture and tradition, low self-esteem and lack of support from men, women do not take advantage of such opportunities to occupy these positions of authority in water services. Therefore, the study concluded that, as woman’s contributions regarding water services provision remains inconsequential because they are excluded from decision making processes that affect their level of living and prospects of empowerment. From a water services provision perspective, this study affirms the theoretical principle that discrimination against women disempowers them. Women are the beneficiaries of water services because most of their duties require water. As such, it is important for women to actively participate and to be involved in the management committee relating to water services and provision.
