Jole: a library for dynamic job-level parallel workloads

Problems in scientific computing often consist of a workload of jobs with dependencies between them. Batch schedulers are job-oriented, and are not well-suited to executing these workloads with complex dependencies. We introduce Jole, a Python library created to run these workloads. Jole has three contributions that allow flexibility not possible with a batch scheduler. First, dynamic job execution allows control and monitoring of jobs as they are running. Second, dynamic workload specification allows the creation of workloads that can adjust their execution while running. Lastly, dynamic infrastructure aggregation allows workloads to take advantage of additional resources as they become available. We evaluate Jole using GAFolder, a protein structure prediction tool. We show that our contributions can be used to create GAFolder workloads that use less cluster resources, iterate on global protein structures, and take advantage of additional cluster resources to search more thoroughly.

Computerized Provider Order Entry: Initial Analysis of Current and Predicted Provider Ordering Workflow

Background: Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) allows providers to enter medication and service orders electronically. Workflow analysis is a critical component of CPOE implementation. Objectives 1. To develop a nosology for provider ordering workflow. 2. To describe actual provider ordering workflow focusing on chart and computer usage 3. To model the impact of computerized ordering on provider workflow in three future state scenarios Method: 20 hours of participant observation was performed for nosology development, time motion studies totaling 47 and predictive modeling projected effects of possible implementation scenarios Results/Conclusions: Unique nosology was developed. Clinicians spent 27% of their time with the patient, 2.2% writing orders and 1.1% locating patient charts. Our study predicted that the E-All scenario (computerization of all orders) would be the best implementation choice. Limitations: Small sample size (25 clinicians), participant frame of reference and other assumptions may have affected the results of this study.

The use of Petri Nets to Personal process modeling and verification

A personal process is a coordination of personal activities, each requiring a joint effort between a user and an enacting organization. In this thesis, we model a personal process using Petri Nets to describe both the control flow and data flow pertaining to the personal process. We redefine the correctness of a personal process and address the verification method based on Petri Nets. In our architecture, we add an online execution engine for the user to execute and verify the correctness of a personal process in real time¡@through the Internet. A personal process can also be managed by a personal workflow management system (PWFMS) running on a handheld device. Because of the strict limitations on their computation power and battery consumptions, we support verification only when the wireless connection is available.

The Research of Maintaining Consistency on Process Timing Constraints

The advances of information technologies have forced many enterprises to reconsider the way their business processes are conducted. Among the various information technologies, workflow management systems (WFMSs) are widely recognized as an effective tool to greatly improve the efficiency of business processes and customers¡¦ satisfaction. Today, a great number of commercial WFMSs have been available on the market; however, none of them are very successful due to the lack of some important features. One of the features that are needed by many business processes is the specification and enforcement of time constraints. In this thesis, we propose a time constraint model that helps workflow designer to define and verify time constraints. Different constraints may be verified at different times, e.g., definition time, invocation time, execution time. A workflow instance, once detected as a violation of some time constraint, could be terminated immediately to avoid the waste of precious resources as well as to provide prompt response to users. A variety of algorithms for verifying time constraints are proposed and analyzed.

The Research on Personal Workflow Systems in Support of Pervasive Computing

Wireless devices and their services are becoming increasingly important for many people¡¦s lives. The services provided by these mobile devices enable users to work without space or time limitation. However, while these applications allow users to record and retrieve information about tasks and data, the relationships between tasks and data are left out. However, we have observed that many of people¡¦s daily activities are not independent, and they are likely to be process-oriented. In this thesis, we develop a personal workflow model that is used to capture the requirements of personal processes. This model also includes a set of primitive operations that can be used to express queries on personal processes. The algebraic properties about these operations and how to optimize queries comprised of these operations are studied. Based on these operations, we propose an SQL-like query language to ease users¡¦ query expressions. Besides, to actively remind the mobilers the right things to do at the right place and the right time, we propose a rule model that resembles event-condition-action (ECA) rules proposed for active database systems. All of the proposed features except for the rule model are implemented on Palm Pilot PDAs.

A goal oriented and decentrally controlled workflow model for facilitating exception handling

More and more organizations are starting to use workflow management systems (WfMS) to monitor, control and manage business processes. However, currently available commercial workflow systems are rather rigid and cannot meet the requirements of a dynamic and fast-changing business. Exception handling capabilities of the systems are very limited. Some research work has been done to address the issue by extending database technologies in workflow domain. In this thesis, we begin with a brief review of some main workflow concepts and do a survey of current research work on exception handling. We propose a leveled workflow model based on Micro-Organization Activity Processor (MOAP) and Object-Oriented Workflow Model (OOWM), which is an extension of Object-Oriented Enterprise Modeling (OOEM). The MOAP construct is extended with a goal concept and the OOEM service concept. We then propose a mechanism for exception handling which utilizes artificial intelligence technologies such as means-end analysis. We further demonstrate the functionalities and exception handling processes with a web-based simulator by applying some workflow exception cases.
