The perception of the effectiveness of sexual education as a means of reducing pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route municipality

Hendricks, Eleanor Alvira January 2013 (has links)
Adolescent pregnancy among students across South Africa is a growing concern. The high incidence of dropping out of school results in greatly diminished chances of success and independence for many. Sex education forms part of the life orientation curriculum, and it has been put in place by the Department of Education as a measure to reduce the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy. Parents of adolescents play a vital role in educating their children on sexual matters, secondary to that is community educations on sexual matters in aid of uplifting communities. The aim of the study was to explore the perception of how effective sex education could be a means of reducing pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route Municipality. To achieve this aim, three objectives and three research questions were articulated. The objectives were to explore the course content of life orientation provided to adolescents, to investigate by questioning adolescents concerning the importance of life orientation in their lives and to examine the factors responsible for the escalation of adolescent pregnancies in the municipality. The research questions were: How adequate was the course content of life orientation in helping adolescents in their sexual lives? How useful was life orientation to adolescent girls? What are the factors that increase the incidence of adolescent pregnancies in the municipality? Qualitative data was obtained through semi-structured interviews; focus group discussions were conducted with students, social workers and life orientation educators and observations made by them were recorded. Data was analysed thematically and was supported by relevant literature. The findings revealed that sex education is not effective in reducing pregnancies in the Blue Crane Route Municipality. The figures for adolescent pregnancy in schools have increased since 2007, when sex education was introduced as part of the life orientation curriculum. Accordingly, it is recommended that the Department of Education should re-evaluate the curriculum and appoint educators who are sufficiently trained in life orientation to make learners properly aware of the consequences of unwanted pregnancies.

Sex Roles, Confidants, and Adolescent Sexual Experience

Coronado, Sabrina F. 01 January 1985 (has links) (PDF)
One hundred and thirteen subjects participated in a study designed to assess the influence of sex role and confidant utilization on adolescent sexual experience, particularly pregnancy. The subjects were from the community college population, with a mean age of 19 years. Subjects were administered a questionnaire to determine their level of sexual experience (i.e., virgin, sexually active and using contraceptives, sexually active and not using contraceptives, or pregnancy experienced), and to assess their tendency to confide in others about sex and birth control. Subjects were also asked to complete the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI), which determined their sex role identification (i.e., feminine, masculine, androgynous, or undifferentiated). The results suggested a positive relationship between the use of contraceptives and a greater tendency to confide. Subjects who had experienced a pregnancy also exhibited a high level of confiding, which was interpreted as a result of exposure to helping professionals. No significant results were obtained to confirm a relationship between sex role identification and adolescent pregnancy, although androgyny appeared to be positively associated with sexual activity and contraception.

Johannesburg, sex love and money: an ethnography of phones and feelings

Masango, Lebohang January 2019 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Social Anthropology March 2019 / Compensated relationships between younger women and older, moneyed men have been established as the cause of new HIV infections in South African women aged 15 – 24 years old. A great portion of the literature on young love in South Africa reproduces the connection between compensated relationships and illness. In this dissertation, I establish how young women in Johannesburg define and practice love and intimacy in their compensated relationships in the era of social media and the #blessed lifestyle. It highlights the spaces and relationships that inform their romantic choices. The research setting is Johannesburg and social media. The methods that are used this study are face-to-face and WhatsApp interviews as well as participant observation on Twitter. I argue that social media use is reconfiguring the meanings of love and intimacy for young women in Johannesburg. The physical context affects their views and actions around their relationships. Through increasing engagements in virtual spaces, young women recognise their individual choices to date with compensation as a response to the wider social vulnerability collectively experienced by women in private and public spaces all over South Africa. In response to that danger, young women use their individual romantic relationships to supplement their lifestyles monetarily in the case of personal endangerment as well as for pleasure. / NG (2020)

Adolescent sexual health in a selected region of Namibia

Lukolo, Linda Ndeshipandula 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCur)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Informal discussions and the work experience of the researcher in the field of health care raised concerns about the problems regarding the sexual health of adolescents. This demonstrated the need for an integrated health care system to promote adolescent sexual health. Against this background the study was undertaken to: • Identify the attitudes of adolescents towards sexual health. • Determine their knowledge of sexual health • Determine what the practice of sexual health by adolescents entail. • Provide recommendations where applicable. Triangulation, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, was used. The findings reflected the following: • A positive attitude towards sexual health, but adolescents are involved in high risk sexual behaviour. • Sub-optimal knowledqë regarding sexual issues. • A need for sexual education by parents and health workers, especially nurses. The following recommendations, are proposed: • Sex education should start at an age as early as possible, at home, by parents. • Health workers should be trained to give proper information and advice to adolescents about their sexual health. • Condoms should be freely available and accessible to all the people of Namibia. • Adolescents should be actively involved in the promotion of their own sexual health. HIV-related sexual risk behaviour, parenting styles and socio-economic status in South African adolescents.

Westcott, Alexandra 20 March 2013 (has links)
With increasing rates of HIV prevalence in South Africa, research focus is on examining factors that may affect HIV-related sexual risk behaviour, especially in adolescents. Two such factors, parenting styles and socio-economic status (SES) have been highlighted. Despite remarkable consistence in parenting style research, with the authoritative parenting style reliably associated with positive outcomes, the applicability of this model in diverse contexts is questioned given that the majority of this research was conducted in White, middle-class populations. Both parenting practices and SES have produced some inconsistent results in relation to sexual risk behaviours; where results have been dependable, they have failed to account for the mechanisms influencing such relationships. The current study aimed to determine if the documented parenting styles – and SES - sexual risk behaviour relationships could be found in 366 South African adolescents. The study also explored parenting style as a moderator and/or a mediator in the SES – sexual risk behaviour relationship, and SES as a moderator on the parenting style – sexual risk behaviour model. The participants completed adapted self report questionnaires (Parenting Style Index (PSI) and Adolescent Sexual Risk Behaviour Questionnaire) and a self-developed biographical questionnaire. Both the parenting styles – sexual risk behaviour and the SES – sexual risk behaviour relationships were found (r =-.21 and -.24 respectively, p <.0001). While the mediation model was disproven, SES and parenting style were both found to act as moderators (F6, 363=2.15, p=.0469). These results are valuable in terms of providing knowledge that may help to develop relevant and effective sexual risk behaviour intervention programmes, as well as adding richness to the current fields of parenting style, and sexual risk behaviour research.
