"¡Yo soy Aymara, yo soy calle!" : a study of young people re-imagining indigeneity and resisting marginalisation in El Alto, Bolivia

Harrison, Charlotte Rose January 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the new self-narratives which are currently being created by young alteños with experience of living and/or working on the streets. These young people are projecting their visions for the future and challenging their marginal status by going back to their roots, looking to the history, myths, legends and practices of their ancestors for inspiration. They are constantly affirming and reaffirming their connections both to the older generations and to Pachamama (Mother Earth). These connections, rather than being threatened by the urbanity of their present existence, are actually enhanced by it. Specifically, this thesis addresses the creativity employed by young alteños as they make a claim to modernity through working as shoe-shiners, conducting rituals such as the ch'alla to Pachamama, participating in festivals to create collectivity and belonging, and politicising indigenous culture in hip-hop at La Casa Juvenil de las Culturas Wayna Tambo in El Alto. This thesis explores the hopes and ambitions of young alteños; the ways they conceive of the future. Whilst it is true that the Presidency of Evo Morales has acted as a catalyst in the processes of re-evaluation of indigenous culture currently underway in Bolivia, this thesis proposes that, in the case of young people in El Alto, they do not merely accept his authority, but are constantly questioning, challenging and - where necessary - opposing, the changes introduced. Therefore, this thesis investigates the ways in which young alteños navigate and re-imagine categories of “indigeneity,” “authenticity” and “modernity” - how they affect and are affected by them in their everyday lives. It asks what it means to be young and Aymara today, in El Alto, and argues that there is no contradiction being both 'Aymara' and 'Street.' In using a youth-centred methodology, this thesis aims to give a direct voice to these young people and weight to their claims as agents of change in contemporary Bolivia.

This thesis aims to analyze what the young people say about practices related to body modification, which refers to the making of voluntary body modifications and have the characteristic of irreversibility. The most popular techniques are popular: tattoos, p.cation of the tongue, branding, subcutaneous implantation, and pocketing the suspension. To perform the research we chose the Focus Group, which was done at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS) which is situated in the city of Rio Grande. Being organized in two phases: first, with students without body modification, in which 13 students participated in this meeting, the second was conducted with students who had some of the bodily changes mentioned above and four students participated in this meeting. This dissertation consists of two articles that appeared from the discussions that stood out during the performance of groups. In the first article, we discuss the formation of youth, linking them to the practices of body modification, we believe that the speeches the need to modify has been directed at young people. In the second article we try to discuss how the body interventions have produced the identities of these young subjects. From these tests some issues stood out, namely: the binding of the immaturity of youth, the preoccupation of assigning meaning / reason of the fact of getting a body modification, the production of identities focusing on the professional future: the power game between young people and parents to make changes, lest they repent while performing body modification, and, finally, we find that the themes present in both groups was about the concern with employability.

The significance of inter-racial conflict in the identity formation of BME young people

Bailey, Joan January 2013 (has links)
Amidst growing concerns due to a rise in incidents of inter racial conflict between African Caribbean and South Asian young men; this thesis draws on the concept of identity formation as an instigating factor in terms of why young people may get embroiled in conflict with other cultural groups. Drawing on semi structured questionnaires with professionals and community workers, an ethnographic study with young people involved in or party to the incidents and a few in depth focus groups it explores the historical issues associated with the conflict, the development of identity and how and why this may be different for those from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups and how it can then materialise into conflict when threatened. It aims to contribute to practice, knowledge and understanding of inter racial conflict and how the creation of positive identities can reduce these incidents. It also seeks to identify approaches and interventions most likely to be effective in addressing this which include working with parents, carers and the wider community who may carry some of the historical issues that allow the conflict to exist. Findings point to identity formation being complex and multifaceted, which can be affected through personal and social experiences: many of these being different for young people from BME communities. Identity is fragile and can be shaped and changed through these experiences which can be compounded by interrelated needs and anxious backgrounds which can then manifest into behaviour that targets those that they may feel threatened by. This study cites the importance of cultural specific responses and interventions which are holistic, informal and flexible to meet the distinct needs of not only young people but those that are influential in their lives. In addition it highlights the importance of work associated with identity formation and the creation of positive identities as a precursor to reducing conflict situations.

Seznamování mladých lidí pomocí sociálních sítí / Social Networks and Relationships of Young People

Lučan, Ondřej January 2019 (has links)
Depending on technological progress and the nature of the actual period characterised by speed, individualism and the fragility of connections, there is an expansion of establishing relations by means of Internet social sites, especially among young people. Meeting people is not concentrated on specialized serves (Tinder, Badoo) but considering the diversity of functions and the amount of users, some people contact others using common websites like Facebook or Instagram. In virtual space, there is a risk of differences between online and offline self-presentation. Individuals tend to accentuate their strong points, and hide their weak points. Regarding the heterogenity of society, the space is occupied by people who expect diverse gratifications, which are reflected in their way of communication. The research is conducted by virtue of half structured interviews with the users of social websites between 20 and 30 years old. Those people profit from the opportunity of easy selection of a partner in a wide spectrum of various profiles without the condition of geographical proximity. As the weakest point of online dating they consider the occurrence of individuals with a deceptive virtual presentation of their identity. The illusion and subsequent disclosure of physical and moral differences can cause...
