Experiences of District-Based Support Team with regards to screening identification assessment and support implementation in Zululand district, KwaZulu NatalZulu, Phindile Doreen 22 October 2020 (has links)
District-based support teams (DBSTs) are tasked with supporting the implementation of inclusive education (IE). One of the core purposes of the Department of Education is to ensure that the whole system is organised in such a way that there is effective delivery of education and support services to all learners who experience barriers to learning and development, in both public ordinary as well as public special schools (Department of Education, 2009). This study investigated the experiences of DBSTs in their work of screening, identification, assessment and support (SIAS) implementation regarding Special Needs Education Services (SNES) in the Zululand District of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education. In an effort to understand their experiences, a qualitative research approach was adopted in which a case study design was employed. Six district officials were purposively identified (five females and one male). Six principals were also interviewed. The study employed interpretivism as the research paradigm. Data was generated through observations, document reviews and analysis, and semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. Theoretically, the study was framed by Deming’s Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) cycle (Deming, 1986). Findings reveal that there is a lack of collaboration between district stakeholders and a lack of recognition and support from management. The vastness of the district and the workload makes it difficult to provide adequate support. The study concluded that collaboration among professionals within a district and all other stakeholders contribute significantly to the effective functioning of the DSTBs. It is therefore recommended that in order to ensure effective and functional DSTBs, it is important that continued support and collaboration among stakeholders be facilitated. The study also suggested further areas of research. / Inclusive Education / D. Phil. (Education)

Laws and regulations affecting the powers of chiefs in the Natal and Zululand regions, 1875-1910 : a historical examination.Thabethe, Sinothi Dennis. 26 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation aims to examine the nature of colonial-made laws and regulations which
affected the powers of chiefs in the Natal and Zululand regions between 1875 and 1910, and the
context in which they were made. Since the establishment of colonial rule in Natal in the 1840s,
the colonial government had aimed to bring chiefs under control and to weaken their powers. In
the 1870s the pace at which chiefly authority was undermined increased. This dissertation begins
in the mid-1870s because this was when white settlers in Natal gradually began to get more
influence over native affairs because of important shifts in British policies in South Africa. It
ends in 1910 when the administration of native affairs in Natal was transferred from
Pietermaritzburg to Pretoria upon the formation of the Union of South Africa. It argues that the
making oflaws governing Africans in the Natal and Zululand regions from 1875 to 1910 had to
do mainly with the desire of colonial officials to tighten up control over Africans, and the desire
of white settlers in Natal to ensure security against Africans who greatly outnumbered them and
to obtain land and labour from African communities. The dissertation begins with a brief
examination of the colonial state and the nature of the powers of chiefs in the period before 1875.
From 1875 to 1893 the Natal settlers gradually gained more influence over native affairs, and
used it to formalize and define the powers of chiefs and izinduna. These developments are
explained in chapter two. In chapter three the laws and regulations affecting the powers of chiefs
that were passed under responsible government from 1893 to 1897 are examined in detail. This
was when white settlers in Natal gained power to directly control native affairs. The Zululand
region, i.e. to the north of the Thukela river, also experienced similar developments as Natal
from 1879 to 1897. After the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879, the powers of hereditary chiefs in
Zululand were weakened, together with the strength of Zulu royal house. The impact of colonial
rule on the powers of chiefs in Zululand is covered in chapter four. When Zululand was
incorporated into Natal in 1897, and when the white settler farmers dominated every department
in the ministry, the 'web' of chiefly authority was weakened at a faster pace than before. Some
ofthe laws that were in the Natal Code of Native Law were extended to Zululand. The way in
which chiefly authority was undermined in the enlarged colony between 1897 to 1910 is
examined in chapter five. Chapter six summarizes the findings of the dissertation. / Thesis (M.A. ; School of Human and Social Studies) - University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2000.

An investigation into the use of problem-solving heuristics to improve the teaching and learning of mathematicsOfori-Kusi, Daniel 02 November 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore the effects of a problem-solving heuristic instructional method on Grade 6 learners’ achievements in algebra. Two main theories inspired the design of this teaching method, namely the modelling and modelling perspective, and action, process, object, schema (APOS) theory. Modelling and modelling perspectives guided the development of modelling-eliciting activities used in the teaching method and the APOS theory guided the sequence of activities used to develop Grade 6 learners’ conceptions in algebra.
The impact of the problem-solving heuristic instructional method was investigated with 198 Grade 6 learners from four different primary schools in the Zululand district of Kwazulu-Natal that were conveniently sampled. A mixed-method approach was used in this study and a hypothesis was formulated to investigate the effects of the teaching method on the learners’ achievements in algebra. The qualitative component consisted of a pre-intervention class observation of mathematics lessons of all four mathematics educators in the schools used for this study. The design and implementation of the problem-solving heuristic instructional method and the quantitative component employed non-equivalent control group design with pre-test and post-test measure.
The main instruments for data collection were an observation schedule to document sequence of events in the classroom during the class observation, a standardized achievement test in algebra used to measure effects of the problem-solving heuristic instructional method and modelling-eliciting activities used as a medium of interaction between learners and the researcher during the implementation of the problem-solving heuristic instructional method.
Findings from the class observation indicated all four schools made use of comparable traditional methods of instruction. The implementation of the problem-solving instructional method gave insights into how a problem-solving heuristic instructional method can be developed and used in Grade 6 algebra lessons, and the factors that could influence learners’ conceptual development in algebra. The findings from the quantitative component supported the initial hypothesis that improved scores in algebra are achieved through participation in the problem-solving heuristic instructional method. Quantitative data was analysed using the t-test, analysis of covariance, Johnson-Neyman (J-N) technique and the effect size. / Mathematics Education / D. Phil. (Mathematics Education)

Ucwaningo lokuqhathanisa amanoveli omlando ka R.R.R. Dhlomo kanye nezibongo zamakhosi akwazulu ezaqoqwa uNyembezi (1958).Mazibuko, Gugulethu Brightness. January 2008 (has links)
This study aims to do a comparative analysis of the historical depiction of the Zulu kings
namely: King Shaka, King Dingane, King Mpande and King Cetshwayo. In this study
comparison is drawn between Dhlomo's historical novels and Nyembezi 's anthology of
praise poetry. This research is based on Interpretive paradigm because it emphasizes a
need for in-depth reading and analysis of the oral presentation. That is why qualitative
research methodology has been employed because it has allowed the researcher to
analytical skills on the content and interviews with community members.
In the analysis of these books; the researcher read; interpreted, compared and contrasted
the contents thereof. In the researchers comparative study; the researcher discovered that
there are some similarities and differences of content in the historical novels and praise
poetry writings. This research examined the publication (relevant to this study) written by
other authors about Zulu kings (these as deemed relevant for this research).
The study went on to verify authenticity around the contents of praise poetry regarding
these kings. Structured interviews were arranged and conducted; wherein it emerged that
most of king Shaka's, king Dingane's and king Mpande's history has somewhat faded
from the interviewee's memories. A lot of information was gathered around king
Cetshwayo. This study also revealed that most of Zulu king's history is somehow
distorted.Theories of Post-Colonialism and Orality were greatly employed during this research.
Post-Colonialism theory was deemed relevant because most of these writings were done
after the Zulus had been robbed of their land. Since praise poetry is oral art; an oral
historian had to be consulted to emphasize the rich heritage contained in orality or oral
art. It clearly emerged from this research that there is a lot of deliberate distortions of
Zulu kings' history. This distortion is not only by Whites but also some Black African
writers who still continue distorting the kings' history.
It is suggested that there be a revisitation and rewriting of the Zulu kings' history and this
be done taking into consideration past writings and interviews with knowledgeable
historians. A lot of knowledge is contained in this thesis that can be helpful to all and
sundry interested in historical writings and other literary genres. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2008.

Norwegian missionary correspondence from Natal and Zululand during the nineteenth centuryHale, Frederick 07 1900 (has links)
This documentary dissertation contributes to scholarly understanding
of the history of missionary endeavours in Natal and Zululand by making
accessible a carefully edited compilation of documents written by Norwegian
missionaries in those areas between 1844 and 1899. From thousands of
pertinent extant documents, the editor has selected a representative crosssection
of the most revealing letters and reports that Lutheran and other
missionaries sent to their sponsoring organisations and the related
periodicals. Each document has been translated from Norwegian into English,
suitably excised of superfluous material, and given a brief introduction.
Annotations explain theological jargon and identify people, places, and
phenomena to which the writers of these letters and reports referred. The
documents are divided into four chapters, each of which begins with an
introduction by the editor. An introductory chapter provides information
about the Norwegian missionaries in question, the general history of their
work, the nature of the correspondence, and the consequences of the failure
of many other historians of foreign rnissions in Southern Africa to avail
themselves of this invaluable historical source. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)
