Women and networks

Ustaibrisevic, Melisa January 2006 (has links)
<p>The existence of informal male networks, sometimes referred to as "old boys' networks", tends to exclude women from top jobs. More and more women have come to realize that they need professional contacts for a successful career and that they also needed each other’s support. Therfore many women are joining women-only networks or trying to create there own informal networks. The purpose is to establish useful contacts, learn new things, and be able to share their concerns with other women in the same situation. For some it gives an opportunity to find a mentor who can guide them.</p><p>The aim of this bachelor thesis is to study if women’s lacking access to male networks is an obstacle for career advancement and to give an insight into women-only networks and their effectiveness to support women leaders and managers and increase women's representation in senior positions. The empirical findigs were conducted in Växjö, Sweden; in the networks “Fröken” and “Rotary”, and one women-only network in Linz, Austria; the BPW, “Business & Professional Women”.</p>

Effect of Maxillomandibular Advancement Surgery on Blood Pressure in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Pilot Study

Bourque, Susan Elizabeth 12 December 2012 (has links)
There is evidence that non-surgical treatment of OSA improves blood pressure (BP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The objective of this study is to determine the effect of maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery for OSA on BP. 15 patients undergoing MMA surgery for treatment of OSA were enrolled. Ambulatory BP, and BMI were recorded pre- and post-operatively. The average age of the patients was 48.9 years and they had mean preoperative AHI of 40.8 and a mean baseline BMI of 30.8 kg/m2. There were no statistically significant reductions in mean systolic or diastolic BP postoperatively. The BMI was found to decrease on average from 30.8 kg/m2 to 29.3 kg/m2 at follow up (p = 0.01). There were no identifiable relationships between OSA severity and BP. Given the prevalence of OSA and it’s adverse medical consequences, more studies to determine the effect of MMA on BP are warranted.

Becoming a nurse manager: From the perspective of nurse managers using a modified strategic talent management framework

Witges, Kim 24 March 2015 (has links)
As a result of the chronic nursing shortage, the ongoing retirements of an aging generation, and a general lack of interest from nurses to become nurse managers, there is valid concern around the development and sustainability of future nurse managers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore nurse managers’ perceptions and experiences of assuming a nurse manager position. In addition, the study highlights the organizational leadership practices that influenced nurses to become nurse managers. Using a modified version of Collings and Mellahi’s (2009) strategic talent management framework, two major themes emerged from the data giving insight into nurses becoming nurse managers. Broadening a nurse’s professional lens was considered by nurse managers to be an important theme relevant to understanding factors that motivated participant’s to become nurse managers. Shaping a nurse’s career path was the second theme that captured the leadership practices of existing leaders that influenced nurse’s becoming a nurse manager. The findings of this research were consistent with the literature related to understanding work motivations, as well as effective leadership practices believed to support career aspirations in nursing leadership. Implications for nursing leadership and practice were shared; recommendations for further research were discussed.

Effect of mandibular advancement splint therapy on upper airway structure and function in obstructive sleep apnoea

Ng, Andrew Tze Ming, Clinical School - St George Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by repetitive closure of the upper airway during sleep and associated with significant adverse health effects including hypertension, heart disease and stroke. Current treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is highly effective but reduced compliance levels have resulted in suboptimal outcomes. Oral appliances such as mandibular advancement splints (MAS) are an alternative treatment and have potential advantages including greater patient compliance, comfort and portability. Although they have been shown to be successful across all categories of OSA severity, overall they are less effective than CPAP. A key limitation to its more widespread use has been the inability to predict which patients will be a treatment success. Prediction of treatment outcome would greatly enhance both MAS utilization and overall OSA management. However, little is known about the mechanisms of action of MAS therapy and a more detailed understanding is likely to improve patient selection and outcome. The aim of this thesis is to improve the prediction of treatment outcome through improved understanding of the mechanisms and site(s) of action of MAS therapy during sleep, through extrapolating this knowledge into daytime prediction tests and by developing prediction equations which can be tested prospectively. The work in this thesis presents novel ideas and findings. It is the first to examine and find that MAS therapy improves upper airway collapsibility during sleep. The site(s) of upper airway collapse was also examined and found to predict treatment outcome. Primary oropharyngeal collapse during sleep predicted treatment success and this was extrapolated into a simple daytime test hypothesized to reflect oropharyngeal function. These primary oropharyngeal collapsers were found to have characteristic awake flow-volume curves and this was then studied prospectively. Cephalometric X-rays and anthropomorphic measurements were also evaluated to formulate prediction equations for treatment outcome with MAS. These new findings together with their implications for clinical practice and future research are then summarized. It is concluded, however, that although many advancements have been made, the mechanisms of MAS action and prediction of treatment outcome remain incompletely understood reflecting the complex pathophysiology of the upper airway.
