Throughout history there developed a dualism between being church and the world. This separation brought forth a church that is moving away from an outside focus on the unchurched, to the tending and retaining of members. Evangelism through the church to a world that is in dire need of it, has been devastated by this separation. The alienation of evangelism led to a church that is ineffective in its service and outreach to the world. The church in South Africa and in other parts of the world experienced a loss of membership. When shifting the focus of the congregational agenda from ministry to institutional maintenance, church growth will be harmed (Schaller 1978:63). Therefore it is necessary that the church will realise that she does not exist for herself but is an extension of God in Christ to a world that is lost. The seeker sensitive evangelism strategy strives to be “mission actual” by proclaiming a message that is older than 2000 years in a cultural relevant way. The seeker sensitive evangelism strategy was created as an answer to various para-church organisations that tried to fill the missional roll that the church failed to do. This model is known by the strong passion for people that are not fully devoted to Christ. Conversion is seen as part of the greater process where people grow through phases. In this study an inquiry is conducted to how the seeker sensitive evangelism strategy may be understood and be practised. An inquiry is conducted to what the theological tangent points within the seeker sensitive evangelism strategy are. Key aspects regarding evangelism in this model are also described. An exposition of what the seeker sensitive evangelism strategy comprises is given at the end of this study. / Dr. G.J. Basson

Religion, solidarity and identity: a comparative study of four South African schools with a religious affiliation

This thesis explores how schools with a religious affiliation recruit religion in school culture and the formal curriculum (both curriculum content and pedagogic method) and how this relates to the pedagogic identities they project. An overarching concern of the thesis is to understand how the character of the affiliated religion relates to the privileging of particular forms of solidarity and identity. This explorative, multiple case study is located in four independent schools in South Africa, each with an official affiliation to a particular religious community. The sample comprises a co-educational charismatic Protestant school, a liberal Catholic school, a traditional-Orthodox Jewish school and a conservative Muslim school. The study foregrounds Bernstein’s (1990, 2000) suggestion that a sociologically important characteristic of religions is the way they constitute the relation between the 'inner’ self and the 'outer’ social world. The thesis looks to Bernstein’s (1975, 2000) theory that the ideology inherent in pedagogic discourse constitutes particular instantiations of power and control (related to Bernstein’s concepts of classification and framing respectively) that structure a school’s curriculum and pedagogic methods. The analysis of school culture utilises Bernstein’s (1975) theory of ritual and identity is explored in relation to Bernstein’s (2000) taxonomy of pedagogic identities. Furthermore, Durkheim’s (1915, 1960) concept of mechanical and organic solidarity and his theory of the sacred and the profane provide the primary conceptualizations of social order. The qualitative analysis of interview data (obtained from students, teachers, principals and religious leaders), policy documentation and direct observation shows significant differences between the schools relating to the recruitment of the affiliated religion in curriculum, pedagogy and ritual. The analysis suggests that the schools affiliated to religions in which the inner and the outer are dislocated (the Protestant and Catholic school), recruit the affiliated religion in a way that predominantly privileges a moral order in which the student is weakly related to a collective and individualised values and relations are emphasised (organic solidarity). Conversely, the schools in the sample affiliated to religions in which the inner is not dislocated from the outer (the Jewish and Muslim school), recruit the affiliated religion in a way that privileges strong identification of the student to a collective (mechanical solidarity). However, the analysis suggests that the form of solidarity related to the recruitment of the affiliated religion at the schools is not always the only form of solidarity privileged. More specifically, the analysis shows that components of the instructional order 'unordered’ by the affiliated religion may result in a layering of different forms of solidarity within the same school. The analysis implies that the schools project different pedagogic identity modes enabled by particular instantiations of power and control related to the privileged form/s of social solidarity. The major finding of the thesis is that the character of the affiliated religion, in terms of its constitution of the inner and the outer, relates to the form of social solidarity privileged by the school’s recruitment of religion, which, in turn, enables the projection of particular pedagogic identities. This thesis makes a contribution to a growing body of literature that vi challenges the idea that 'religious schools’ are homogenous. It provides a theoretical methodology for exploring differences and similarities between 'religious schools’ across different religions and suggests a sociologically important source of variance in 'religious schools’ in general.

The purpose of diversification is to keep and also create new jobs in the rural areas, keep or even increase farm income and contribute to the recovery of the villages/rural communities. It may lead to the stabilization of the rural population, increase in quality of their lives and the competitiveness of agricultural holdings. Its main objective is to analyze extend and importance of diversification in the whole Czechia and also in the model area of ORP Kralovice. It also aims to determine the influence of diversification on the rural development and employment in the rural areas. Then it intends to evaluate the importance of diversification for concrete agricultural holdings in the model area and to find out which are the most common/frequent diversification activities. A Study of Collaborative Model between University and Its Affiliated Experimental Elementary School

The purpose of this study was to understand the collaborative model between university and its affiliated experimental elementary school. The author used NCATE¡¦s (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) PDS Standards (Professional Development School Standards) announced in 2001 in the USA to examine current collaborative models in Taiwan. The author firstly proceeded documentary analyses to analyze related data about Professional Development Schools in the United States and interviewed subjects who have been or are being related to the topics and have rich experiences within the two university-school partnership cases. The interview questions were developed and based upon NCATE¡¦s PDS Standards. The author collected the related data through a variety of channels, such as school websites, laws and regulations, newspaper features & reports, and school documents. The findings and results of the study are as follows: (1) The collaborative model provides an environment which supports multiple learners through University-School partnership; (2) The collaborative model can expand the learning group and share experience with people through University-School partnership; (3) The majority of the University-School partnership operated are based on the laws and regulations and both sides thus display their responsibilities; (4) The collaborative model supports teacher education interns¡¦ learning and develops the contents of teacher education program; (5) The partnership designs the programs from multiple perspectives, assesses the effect in various ways, and provides the experiences for the interns to face different students; (6) Due to the long history of affiliated elementary school, both sides have been taking the partnership for granted. However, the context has changed a lot recently, people got involved are concerned about the impact that might have on the partnership in the future; (7) As for the liaison and coordination, the university should strengthen organizations¡¦ function and use the school principal, an academic department, and a network to communicate with each other; (8) Resources sharing can promote collaboration between the university and the affiliated school. The above results have been analyzed and discussed to provide conclusions and suggestions for the reference of the education authorities, school administration and future related studies.

Impact of the Budgetary Type ¡§ Local Education Development Fund¡¨ on School Management¡Xa Case Study in Kaohsiung City

The Local Education Development Fund was established by the Kaohsiung City Government according to the Compilation and Administration of Education Expenditures Act in 2003 and was operated as affiliated unit budget. Affiliated unit budget, which has the autonomy of distribution and flexibility of the execution, tallying with school-based management which are influenced by the educational reform trend, therefore was generally approved by educational administrators. However, according to the research¡¦s analysis, there was no significance on the encouragement of raising funds and there was difference between deposition of the accumulated surplus into the normal cost and the general financial concept. What kind of system on earth is the implementation of Kaohsiung Local Education Development Fund at the school managers, the principals¡¦ points of view? Furthermore, are their opinions changing with time? Has the affiliated unit budget exerted any influence on school management¡HHow can the merits of the affiliated unit budget be used to coping with the shortening of educational budgets after the combining of Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County and to exalt the spirit of school-based management and to promote civils¡¦ education. These are issues worth those people¡¦s discussion who care about civils¡¦ education and these are also the concerns of the research. The research adopted nature research and grounded theory to interview seven principals in primary schools and junior high schools in Kaohsiung City. The research explored interviewees¡¦ cognitions and opinions on Local Education Development Fund and their strategies and measures based on their experiences, and inquired the influence of Local Education Development Fund (which is based on affiliated unit budget), on school managements by means of Atlas.ti techniques. According to the research¡¦ analysis, though Kaohsiung Local Education Development Fund possesses the meaning of school-based budgeting. The practice can help the municipal avoid invest excessive capital in schools which has surplus of budget with the aid of controlling the cumulation on surplus budgets. Furthermore, in the interaction of administrative departments, there are strategic changes in financial execution which are less related to the types of budgeting, but more related to School Budget Evaluation implemented by the Educational Bureau. Besides, the budgeting has little effect on encouragements to increasing income and decreasing expenditure but enlarges gaps among schools and causes disadvantages to remote small schools. To sum up, the distribution of educational budget is more important than budgeting.
