INTRACOMMUNITY USAGE OF "NIGGA" IN SPOKEN AFRICAN AMERICAN LANGUAGE: A CORPUS STUDY

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how nigga is used between speakers of African American Language (AAL). Nigga has few detailed analyses that examine its intracommunity usage, especially regarding non-negative uses of the word. It is the center of much controversy within African American communities, particularly due to the generational divide on its racist potency, and horrific historical ties. Therefore, I ask whether in-group speakers use nigga in different contexts to convey meanings that are also neutral or positive in sentiment, and whether factors such as gender and age affect these sentiments. This thesis is a partial replication of Smith (2019), and I utilize spoken data from the Corpus of Regional African American Language in my quantitative analysis. I find that AAL speakers use nigga across all sentiments, and in a variety of syntactic environments. Additionally, men seem to say nigga more often than women in spoken conversation, and younger individuals are more likely to use the term over older individuals. Through this thesis, I shed light on the invisible linguistic boundaries that complicate AAL speakers' feelings on nigga. Efficacy of prostate cancer treatments in African American men

Prostate Cancer is one of the leading causes of male cancer related deaths. African American men who are diagnosed with this disease are over two times more likely to die from it than any other ethnic group. Even with this being a proven fact there are little to know studies that investigate why nor how to remedy the disparity. When a man begins the screening process and all the way until the beginning of treatment, the same guidelines are followed regardless of the patients’ ethnic background. This tactic has led to the developed of the disparity that: African American, even when diagnosed with prostate cancer of similar aggressiveness and receive the same treatments as other non-African American patients, are continuously found to have a less likely chance of survival. Despite all the research and the recurring disparity treatments are continued in the same manner. While the exact reasoning as to why African American males do not respond similarly to treatments as other ethnic groups remains unexplained. It could stem from internal differences, screening process, diagnosing methods, or the treatments themselves. Internal differences, like melanin levels, cannot be changed, but there are ways to circumvent these inevitable differences. Existing studies allow for parallels to be drawn about what effect these inevitable differences may have on the African American response to treatment methods; but clinical trials will need to be completed in order to determine if the parallels drawn hold any merit and if they have the ability to fix the disparity. Once those differences are understood, it will be time to conduct new research to determine if those changes are sufficient enough to eliminate the over two percent chance that African American men are more likely to die from a disease when compared to others.

Seeing (for) Miles: Jazz, Race, and Objects of Performance

Using jazz trumpeter Miles Davis (1926-1991) as its primary example, "Seeing (for) Miles" attempts to build on a growing discourse related to the intersection of jazz, race, and visual / material culture that has heretofore largely ignored the role of consumption. Davis' numerous decisions to spend money on expensive things and/or have them custom made, insisting these things be seen by others, and overseeing his image in advertisements are a reminder that famous musicians often found themselves straddling the line between being consumers and objects of consumption. Following Davis on both sides of that line also necessitates following him on and off the stage, in the eye of his fans as well as the general public. Each of the chapters of this dissertation seek to understand how Davis negotiated this variety of viewpoints as a musician, consumer, and African American via his colored trumpets, tailored suits, sports cars, an expensive home, and instrument advertisements.;The decisions Davis and others made with regard to their positions as consumers and African Americans reflected back on a longer history of black interaction with the marketplace while positioning themselves within existing debates concerning racial equality, jazz's status as high art, and the merits of capitalism as a catalyst for democracy. at the same time, their careers as public performers, status as celebrities, and the increasing presence of the visual mass media ensured that their consumer-related decisions reached bigger and wider audiences than ever before. In such a context, the marketplace can be understood as having constituted a unique venue in which black jazz musicians performed a variety of roles relative to their musical and racial identities. Understanding the ways Davis and others negotiated this process allows us to shed light on a relatively unexplored aspect of jazz culture while also suggesting ways in which racial and musical identities continue to be impacted by visual / material culture in modern society.

African American Women Bloggers’ Lived Experiences with Digital Entrepreneurship: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study

The professionalization of blogs has elevated blogging to an organizational field whereby bloggers develop a legitimate career path. For many minority women bloggers, the transition from being traditionally employed to managing a one-person digital enterprise is often met with racial and gender imbalances created by nontraditional modes of work. The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of how African American women bloggers described their lived experiences with managing a one-person digital enterprise and the implications of their racial and gender identity within this nontraditional mode of work. To address this gap, a transcendental phenomenological method was used to collect data from African American women bloggers. This study was framed by 3 key concepts focused on African American women bloggers: Brydges and Sjöholm’s concept of personal style blogger, Martinez Dy et al’s concept of women digital entrepreneurs, and Gabriel’s concept of Black female identity online. Data were gathered using 9 virtual semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the modified Van Kaam method. Eight themes emerged when answering the research question. The findings of the research showed that being an African American woman blogger means conducting entrepreneurial activity, working towards financial solvency, being proud of racial identity, and creating and delivering content as a blogger. Results gleaned from this transcendental phenomenological study may help promote social change by bringing awareness to policymakers on the issues of equity, access, and opportunity for marginalized populations who seek to become digital entrepreneurs.

The African-American Community of Ogden, Utah: 1910-1950

The African-American community of Ogden, Utah started much of its growth in the early twentieth century. Prior to the early nineteen hundreds less than one hundred African Americans lived in Ogden. The availability of jobs with the railroads brought many African Americans to Ogden in search of steady employment. Through the decades Ogden's African Americans branched out from railroad and service work into business ownership. As the African-American community grew, its members established new churches in the city. Racism and indifference had their impact on the African Americans. They found themselves segregated into specific neighborhoods and African-American males were unable to hold the priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Racism was not confined to members of the Mormon Church as the Ku Klux Klan attempted to make inroads into Ogden in the early 1920s. The Klan's limited influence lasted less than two years and soon disappeared due to efforts by the Ogden City Commission. In the 1990s African Americans still comprised a small percentage of Ogden City and Weber County. The L.D.S. Church ended priesthood denial for African Americans in 1978. The study of Ogden's African-American community provides insight into a minority community in the western United States and contrasts the differences between race relations in the West and other geographic areas of the United States.
