Red sour cherries have been a dessert item for Americans since long before George Washington chopped down the cherry tree. In the past twenty years production of sour cherries has increased at a faster rate than population. Since 1938 population of the United States has increased approximately 43 million, a 25 percent increase, whereas sour cherry production has increased approximately 78 million pounds, a 38 percent increase. This trend is expected to continue in the future, in fact, according to a Michigan survey the production of sour cherries in relation to the population will increase more in the future.

The production of' turkeys by farmers for market in Utah has risen from a meager beginning a few decades ago, to one of the important agricultural industries today. Utah's turkey industry has expanded tenfold from the 226,000 head sold in 1929 to the record high 2,285,000 head sold in 1954. Pounds sold was 13 times greater in 1954 than in 1929 due to the increased weight per bird as well as to the increase in number of head. The record number of 2,285,000 head sold for the amount of $10,635,000. This accounted for about seven per cent of the total farm income in Utah.

Due to the cumulative effect of certain economic factors, the farmers of western Millard County, known as the Delta area, are in unfavorable economic conditions. Many of the farms are heavily mortgaged, taxes and interest in many cases are in arrears for several years, and in general, lack of prosperity in quite evident. The majority of the farm land in this area is within one of four drainage districts. These districts are known as drainage districts No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4. The cost and maintenance of these drainage systems is generally thought to be one of the contributing causes of the unfavorable financial situation in this area.
