Optimisation of cold rolling process parameters to improve surface quality of the AA 3003-H22 treadbright coils

The main objective of this dissertation was to investigate how cold rolling process parameters could be optimised to improve surface quality of the AA 3003 H22 treadbright coils. This treadbright product is one of Hulett Aluminium’s main products and is exported mainly to the North American market. One of its critical requirements is a defect-free bright surface. The literature review was conducted with particular focus on the effects of selected parameters or settings with respect to surface quality and a chapter outlining these aspects has been included. It was clear from the literature review that selected parameters do affect the surface quality and if adjusted accordingly can improve surface quality on treadbright coils. Subsequent chapters after the literature review outline how the tests were conducted, procedures followed and equipments used from the cold rolling machine to laboratories. Surface appearance results after each parameter was adjusted, showed that the surface quality did improve and even got better when other parameters like the colouring roll angle and percentage reduction were adjusted. Correct working limits within which each parameter would yield acceptable surface quality were also established. All experiments conducted had no influence on the microstructure of the metal as it remained the same throughout each experiment. The same has been found with the mechanical properties as percentage reductions experiments led to no change in tensile strength, proof strength and percentage elongation. In conclusion, this research has proved that cold rolling process parameters selected did affect the product surface quality. If controlled they can be used to optimise the surface quality on the treadbright product as required by Hulett Aluminium and its customers.

Previous work had shown that near the composition MneoA1₂oC₂o there occurs a highly ordered cubic phase with interesting magnetic properties. A study of the effect of additions of iron and chromium has been carried out with a view to obtaining some information about the structure and magnetic properties. Two alloy groups were studied, first, Mn₆₀(Fe or Cr)ₓA1₂₀-ₓc₂₀ and second Mn₆₀₋ₓ(Fe or Cr)ₓA1₂₀C₂₀. It was found that in the former group the magnetization decreased markedly with either Fe or Cr additions. The results could be represented by assuming the manganese moments were constant and the Fe or Cr atoms had a net moment of -5 Bohr magnetons when replacing an Aluminum atom. The second group yielded no such simple representation because the moment per magnetic atom values varied quite irregularly. The decreasing solid solubility limit at the titanium-rich end of the titanium-copper constitutional diagram suggests the possibility that titanium-rich alloys may be age-hardenable. However, results obtained by previous investigators, using lump samples, show that after quenching from 790°C the age-hardening of an alloy containing 1,7 percent copper is very light while a 0.8 percent copper alloy decreases in hardness, during heat treatment at 400°C. It was believed possible that powder samples of alloys might show different results from the lump samples used by previous investigators. Consequently, a 1.90 percent copper alloy was made by the technique of levitation melting, checked for homogeneity, and filings of 48-65 Tyler screen size were cut from it for aging experiments. Hardness readings do show a hardness peak at aging temperatures of 400°C, 450°C, and 500°C and thus indicate that the titanium-copper alloy is susceptible to age-hardening treatments. Interest in the Mn₆₀A1xZn₂₀_ₓC₂₀ and Mn₆₀GaₓZn₂₀-ₓC₂₀ systems results from pregious studies of Mn-A1-C, Mn-Zn-C, and Mn-Ga-C systems; in particular the alloys near compositions Mn₆₀A1₂₀C₂₀, Mn₆₀Zn₂₀C₂₀ and Mn₆₀Ga₂₀C₂₀. The saturation magnetization (σ) versus temperature (T) curve for alloys near the compositions Mn₆₀A1₂₀C₂₀ and Mn₆₀Ga₂₀C₂₀ shows normal ferromagnetic behaviour from 0°K to the Curie points of the alloys. Alloys near the composition Mn₆₀Zn₂₀C₂₀, on the other hand, have abnormal behaviour as they experience a maximum in the σ-T curve in the neighbourhood of -40°C. Reasons for investigating the Mn₆₀A1Zn₂₀-xC₂₀ andMN₆₀GaₓZn₂₀-ₓC₂₀ systems were: 1. to provide further data regarding the presence of abnormal behaviour in Mn₆₀Zn₂₀C₂₀ and of normal behaviour in Mn₆₀A1₂₀C₂₀ and Mn₆₀Ga₂₀C₂₀. (i.e. alloys near these compositions). 2. to suggest how the valency of the cube-corner atom affects the normal ferromagnetic moment of these alloys.
