<p>There has been a quick development in the wireless network area during the last decade. Mostly </p><p>these days the focus in the wireless area is on very high speed and long range applications. This </p><p>thesis describes how ZigBee is suitable for wireless sensor networks in logistic telemetry </p><p>applications for global managing and monitoring of goods. ZigBee has been developed by the </p><p>organization named as ‘ZigBee Alliance’ as a new wireless standard for the wireless solutions </p><p>based upon the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard [2]. ZigBee is a new technology as compared to the other </p><p>wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, but it has certain characteristics such as low cost, low </p><p>power, support for mesh networking e.t.c which makes its chances to be more successful than </p><p>others. </p><p> </p><p>The other aim of this thesis is to examine different issues related to ZigBee to see its fitness for </p><p>logistic telemetry applications like multi-hop routing issues, routing strategies and design </p><p>requirements. ZigBee is relatively new wireless technology, so there are great deals of promises </p><p>associated with it. In this thesis, a comparison between ZigBee and Bluetooth technologies will </p><p>also be made.</p>

Bit-Packing Optimization for StreamIt

StreamIt is a language specifically designed for modern streaming applications. A certain important class of these applications operates on streams of bits. This paper presents the motivation for a bit-packing optimization to be implemented in the StreamIt compiler for the RAW Architecture. This technique aims to pack bits into integers so that operations can be performed on multiple bits at once thus increasing the performance of these applications considerably. This paper gives some simple example applications to illustrate the various conditions where this technique can be applied and also analyses some of its limitations. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Linkages between universities and patent applications : An empirical study conducted on patent application data

Numbers of persons with a higher education have inclined fast during the last dec-ades, as the University sector in Sweden has increased. This due to that the Swedish government has had a very encouraging attitude towards the Universities position for economic regional growth. The aim of this thesis is to see if there are any relationships between students at a University in a region and the number of patents that have been applied for in the same region using data taken from European patent of-fice and Statistics Sweden. Patent is one way to measure innovations, and knowledge is one of the core foundations for new innovations. Different models have been used to determine if any significant relationship between patent applications and number of people with higher education is present. The empirical findings came up with the results that numbers of people with higher education have positive relationship with University regions. The two variables, people with higher technical education and research and development at Universities also showed positive significant results, which gives support for the chosen theories in the thesis. It is hard to say that the decen-tralization of the Swedish universities have been a total success, because in the thesis results were found which shoed that the Malmö region was outstanding in terms of patent applications. In this region many different Universities and private R&amp;D de-partments are located, together with students etc. Further research in this field has to be conducted to be able to give the policy maker better foundation for decisions.

Web applications store their data at the server. Despite several benefits, this design raises a serious problem because a bug or misconfiguration causing data loss or corruption can affect a large number of users. We describe the design of a generic recovery system for web applications. Our system tracks application requests and reuses undo logs already kept by databases to selectively recover from corrupting requests and their effects. The main challenge is to correlate requests across the multiple tiers of the application to determine the correct recovery actions. We explore using dependencies both within and across requests at three layers, (i.e., database, application, client) to help identify data corruption accurately. We evaluate our system using known bugs and misconfigurations in popular web applications, including Wordpress, Drupal and Gallery2. Our results show that our system enables recovery from data corruption without loss of critical data incurring little overhead while tracking requests.

Branded smart phone applications: an efficient marketing strategy?

Advertising through smart phone applications is one of the fastest growing categories in advertising nowadays. Branded game-apps on mobile phones have several very innovative and attractive aspects, they physically engage their customers into a game, creating on a first level an entertainment but mainly they are advertising their products and the brand’s name. Many studies have been written on gaming, customer engagement and marketing strategies, but only few studies has been written on the convergence of mobile phone technology, gaming and marketing. This research is investigating to which extend this innovative way of marketing can be considered as an efficient marketing strategy. In order to get an insight from both sides of the market, semi-structured interviews have been lead with phone-app experts and users. Similar answers were formulated by both the producers and the users, leading me to the conclusion that a game-app is engaging the users into an overall positive dialogue with the brand. The contribution of this exploratory study is a greater understanding of the phenomenon of branded game-apps, in relation to previous studies on marketing, game mechanisms and brand-consumer relationships.

Field evaluation of aerial applications of hydramethylnon and metaflumizone to control the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta (Buren) and related ant species (Hymenoptera: formicidae)

The red imported fire ant (RIFA) was introduced to the United States from South America over 75 years ago, and has become a pest in wildlife settings. Hydramethylnon fire ant bait has been the industry standard for controlling the red imported fire ant. It can be compared to novel baits, and used to evaluate different aerial application techniques, such as the "skip swath" method. Two baits, hydramethylnon and metaflumizone, and a skipped-swath method were evaluated through observations of the activity levels of RIFA mounds and abundance. The effects of RIFA on other ant species were determined by eliminating RIFA with insecticides, and then sampling for all remaining ant species. Measurements of RIFA mound activity was done by recording their response to the vibration of wire flags located in active mounds. This method indicated control of RIFA with hydramethylnon and metaflumizone from 61 to 180 d post-treatment. Additional monitoring for RIFA activity, in the same plots, was done with baited vials. These results indicated that complete control of RIFA was never achieved with either hydramethylnon or metaflumizone within 180 d post-treatment; however, there were significant reductions in RIFA population as a result of both chemical baits from 3-92 d post-treatment. A reduction of RIFA populations occurred with both baits, as determined through scheduled sampling of all ant species using baited vials. Native ants, such as Dorymyrmex spp., were found in higher numbers once RIFA populations were reduced, indicating that the two ant species compete for resources such as food and space. Dorymyrmex spp. numbers were suppressed by RIFA populations, while other ants, such as Paratrechina spp. were unaffected.
