The need to separate living quarters, increase privacy and compartmentalize one's surroundings is a major characteristic of human nature. Walls and permanent architectural structures serve this purpose well, but lack flexibility. Office cubicles offer some flexibility thanks to their relative ease of assembly and grid-like layout, but they rarely address aesthetics. My research explores the flexibility of a unique surface that serves as a free-standing wall or partition. Relying on the purest of geometric shapes -circles, arcs and right angle polygons- I've composed a series of panels cut from a flat sheet of raw material that, when assembled, have a spring-like flexibility that can be extended, flattened, stacked and curved to create an upright surface that is vertically rigid. This research utilizes advanced design tools ranging from 3D computer modeling software to rapid prototyped miniature models to laser CNC machine fabrication. Along with the high technology used to create and test these units, a vast library of sustainable materials was referenced and appended in order to assure the cleanest and most sustainable avenues of production. And to further increase the sustainability of this design concept, I was able to configure the panel shapes to nest perfectly together reducing nearly all wasted cutting material.

Art making is silly. This is why it should not be taken so seriously. When topics are addressed with too much seriousness they become stagnant and rigid. This thesis addresses topics I find crucial to the process of making Art. I use popular culture references because of their communicable potential. Nothing is argued in the duration of this work. On the contrary, thoughts are shared in hopes to inspire the reader to question what type of journey and practice they involve themselves.

As people living in 2017, what, if anything, have we come to know about art as a whole? What can we say about the artistic impulse? What is art for, and what does it stand to show us about ourselves today? In this paper, I try to address these questions, from the standpoint of both an artist and a human being. Examining art as ancient as the prehistoric cave paintings, as well as art of the present day, I discuss certain ontological traits that art-making has both lost and maintained over the years. Through Heidegger’s philosophy of Being, Tillich’s theology of New Being, and Stephen King’s depictions of the uncanny, I explore the idea that all creative acts ultimately point us back to our own mortality and finitude.

This body of work stems from the feeling of paradox between what I learned and how I feel about religion in China. I express these complex feelings through painting, drawing, printmaking, as well as the experimenting of light and dark in the exhibition gallery.

This paper represents a body of work: Shadow States of States. When we think of the making of America, what happened to the things that were cast aside?

This is a body of work produced at the University of Iowa. With these pieces I am interested in things that do not follow, that hold emotion but don't have a narrative. In the unknown being more real than the known, because there is life in the not understanding. And in lying about something there is no way you can pull off. There is a river of lava flowing below the surface, but there are no volcanoes.

I make, I feel, and I listen. Jewelry is a very intimate type of sculpture, an attraction to an object to be placed on the skin. I think of my pieces like thoughts or conversations with the materials. My thoughts lately are immersed in my fascination of felting wool. By choosing materials I am drawn to, my work is not bound to one material to convey my design. Through these materials small wearable sculptures are created that I hope engages the wearer as much as they engaged me during the creation. Color, texture, material, process becomes the inspiration for my jewelry. The colors in the raw unprocessed wool bundles are like stripped taffy candy, and transform into streaks and bursts of color that comes out through working the material. Wool is a very alluring material, the tactile sensation on the skin is pleasant and comforting. Maybe it is familiarity or the warmth of wool that attracts me, or the lush colors and textures. The wool is compacted and felted with a barbed needle, the structure is reinforced and strengthened as the process is repeated. Felted wool has given me a completely new language in which to create my work. Every step of the process of felting is enjoyable and meditative to me. My work is created purely instinctively, relying on my own aesthetics to guide my way through the making. Through these choices, a piece evolves on its own without restriction. I find this to be a very expressive way of working for me. Beyond these thoughts I do not place any boundaries or rules on my work. I hope the work engages you. I hope you are engaged.

Abstract Our country stroke the path of democratic politics by enforcing the local election since 1950¡Abut we merely imitated electoral system of Japan¡AAmerica¡Aand so forth due to each incomplete electoral system at the initial stage. However ¡Mthere are still many problems failed to operate normally in practical application of electoral affairs arising from our exceptional national conditions. Hence¡Aour Public Officials Election and Recall Law experienced several amendments though decades, and resulted two Election Laws¡A¡©President & Vice-president Election and Recall Law¡A¡ªand ¡©Public Officials Election and Recall Law.¡ª Notwithstanding ¡Athere is still a great deal of system in the process of amending laws based on the consequence produced by the negotiation and compromise of political parties¡Abut not the trend of the negotiation and Compromise of political parties¡Abut not the trend of the public will completely. Therefore¡Aon the contrary some system become incompatible with abiding customs of the real society after amending laws. The most conspicuous side effects of amendment are that¡©Qualification conditions of residence period¡ªof the candidate and voter was amended from 6 months to 4 months in September 1994¡Aresulting in that a candidate can change the household register within fleeting 4 months¡Aand cause the problem of bogus population¡Awhich is still cannot be solved efficiently¡F ¡©The legend of valid vote and invalid vote¡ªwas amended that the marking position of the valid vote should be on the ¡©Marking Column¡ªcausing numerous invalid votes when transacting the 11th president ¡® Vice-president Election in 2004¡Aand brought the incessant conflict of ¡©Invalid Election¡ª of President ¡® Vice-president Election. This shows that the trait of a democratic county is the democratic electoral system¡Aand whether the electoral system of a country conforming to the national conditions of the country is the key of being heading for democracy. This study is to discuss and figure out problems with respect to Election Laws and practical operation process extensively¡Aand further classify these problems to design a poll. The targets are the staff of district offices and household registries of Kaohsiung City¡Aand expect to find out problems¡Aand discuss the cruxes by these experienced staff. At last¡Aexamine the problems and propose improvements through percentage analysis and cross analysis after finishing the poll.
