La mise en récit historique de l'art au Québec dans les synthèses de l'histoire de l'art au Canada, de 1925 à 1973

Depuis les années 1920, des ouvrages de synthèse sont ponctuellement publiés pour faire état de l’histoire de la production artistique canadienne. À partir de ces récits historiques d’une ampleur nationale, nous nous intéressons à la façon dont l’art produit au Québec est mis en récit. Comment les auteurs tentent-ils (ou non) l’inscription de la production artistique du Québec en tant que partie au sein d’un tout, l’art canadien? Ce projet de maîtrise pose une réflexion sur l’espace et le rôle accordés aux artistes, aux œuvres et aux institutions artistiques du Québec dans les récits d’histoire des arts canadiens. Une analyse effectuée sur sept ouvrages publiés entre 1925 et 1973 met en évidence la structure narrative sous-jacente aux récits. Nous soutenons que dans ces récits, et ce malgré une volonté manifeste de la part de certains auteurs de reconnaitre la spécificité culturelle des communautés canadienne-française et canadienne-anglaise, la production artistique du Québec se trouve la plupart du temps relayée aux marges de l’histoire de l’art au Canada. Ces recherches concernent, dans une perspective historique, la manière dont fut inscrite une communauté artistique et culturelle spécifique dans les récits nationaux. Ce mémoire fait ainsi la démonstration qu’il ne suffit pas d’inscrire une communauté au récit, encore faut-il penser une structure narrative qui la comprend dans son historicité et ses spécificités. À la suite des analyses effectuées, deux principaux types de structures narratives furent mis en évidence. Les caractéristiques de ces structures sont traitées en deux chapitres distincts : le chapitre 2. Généalogie artistique linéaire, et le chapitre 3. Généalogie artistique buissonnante. Le premier chapitre, intitulé Le passage de notices biographiques autonomes à une première mise en récit historique, aborde quant à lui la structure narrative mixte caractérisant le premier ouvrage de notre corpus.

Seeking social services on the Gaspé Coast: a narrative analysis of anglophones’ experiences of access and care

This research addresses the concern that Anglophone populations in the predominantly French speaking Gaspé region of eastern Québec are experiencing high rates of social problems such as poverty and unemployment. Anglophones in this region, as in other rural regions of Québec, have identified facing difficulties related to access to social services, an aspect which further complicates existing social problems. Using a narrative methodology and post structural, feminist and intersectional lenses, this research explores the experiences of English speaking service users in accessing and engaging with social services on the Gaspé coast. This study also explores the boundaries and reproduction of linguistic categories and identity and offers insight into resisting dominant discourses pertaining to linguistic difference in Québec, specifically within the context of social services. The results of this research demonstrate that service users’ experiences were characterised by disproportionately negative effects in regards to service access and delivery such as intensified logistical problems and social work practice related weaknesses. The research also concludes that experiences involved multiple, intersecting problems, which were irreducible to the singular dimension of language. The intersections of language and race, language and class, and language and ability were raised as critical concerns in terms of access to social services on the Gaspé coast. Finally, the encounters between Anglophones and Francophones in the context of health and social services in the region were found to be entangled and inseparable from the historical and ongoing political struggles over language on this territory. / Graduate

This thesis examines the everyday experiences of Anglophone communities in three different regions of Quebec – the Gaspésie, Gatineau and Eastern Townships – with the aim to understand their sense of place. Specifically, the focus is on the role of different geographic contexts on everyday access to social services, particularly healthcare, and how these experiences contribute to Anglophones’ place attachment. Data collection involved semi-structured personal interviews with ten participants in each region. Comparative analysis yielded three main findings: (1) issues with accessing healthcare in English reinforces Anglophones’ minority status; (2) in spite of the challenges faced as a linguistic minority, Anglophones demonstrate a strong sense of place to their region; and (3) feelings of home, heritage, and rootedness constitute elements in Anglophones’ place attachment and contribute to their sense of place in Quebec. The study also concludes that age, mobility, and location are important variables in influencing everyday experiences in each of the three regions.

What Does it Mean to be a Montrealer? Multiculturalism, Cosmopolitanism and Exclusion Identity from the Perspective of Montreal's Ethnocultural and Linguistic Minorities

This thesis explores the meaning of the Montreal identity from the perspective of Montreal's ethnocultural and linguistic minorities. Generally speaking, it is commonplace for authors in the academic literature on Montreal to describe the city and its identity in terms of its multicultural and cosmopolitan sensibilities. While this forms part of what it means to be a Montrealer, this is not the only significance that this project accounts for. In examining the opinion sections of the Montreal Gazette from the period of September 4th, 2012 to the period of April 7th, 2014 ̶ a period that coincides with the Parti québécois' eighteen months in power under the leadership of Pauline Marois ̶ this thesis reveals that the meaning of the Montreal identity is tied to both the aforementioned multicultural and cosmopolitan sensibilities, as well as a sentiment of exclusion rooted in an ethnic interpretation of the Québec nation. Accordingly, this research also shows how these aspects of Montrealness contribute to the building of a Montreal identity that is meant to be distinct and even opposed to Québec identity.

Le développement de l'aisance à l'oral en français langue seconde au cours d'un programme d'immersion à l'étranger de courte durée de 5 semaines

L’objectif principal de la présente étude était de déterminer si la durée d’un programme d’immersion à l’étranger (PIE) de cinq semaines était suffisante pour observer une amélioration significative au niveau du développement de l’aisance à l’oral (AAO) en français langue seconde (L2) chez des anglophones adultes (n=100). À l’aide d’une épreuve de narration effectuée au début et la fin du PIE, les résultats principaux, calculés à partir de diverses valeurs temporelles de la parole, ont démontré que 1) la durée du PIE a eu un effet positif sur le développement de l’AAO en français L2 chez tous les apprenants, 2) le PIE était particulièrement bénéfique pour le développement des apprenants (n=33) qui avaient un degré d’AAO faible en L2 et 3) pour certaines mesures chez les apprenants les plus aisés (n=33), il était possible d’afficher un degré d’AAO similaire aux locuteurs natifs (n=23).
