Things thatMacmillan, Anne, S.M. (Anne Meredith) Massachusetts Institute of Technology January 2015 (has links)
Thesis: S.M. in Art, Culture and Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2015. / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (pages 86-89). / This thesis explores the artistic practice of the author by investigating selected art work she has produced within the last nine years. The writing avoids explaining, and instead aims to share with the reader by exploring how divided attention has been a major topic of research for her visual art practice. Recurring forms in her practice are investigated: repetition, circling, tracing, and listing. The writing emphasizes process over final product. This acknowledges that ideas about the work, and the work itself, change in the process of creation, and when put into association with a larger body of artwork. By discussing her own work along side the work of other artists, writers and theorists, the thesis explores a process of "attending to things" through an art practice. How can one's attention be absorbed by, reflective of, or projected into objects being studied? How might these different configurations between subject and object cause a conceptual erasure of the observer, or the object of study? The artist is absorbed by the objects she observes when she conforms her body and her attention to their specificity. Her process reflects the world as she samples and gathers empirical evidence using various digital tools. She projects her own ideas into objects as she attempts to describe; this process effectively erases what is unknown and unfamiliar about them. / by Anne Macmillan. / S.M. in Art, Culture and Technology

The connective service : a research laboratory for the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania / Research laboratory for the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaBatchelor, Peter J January 1987 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1987. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 43-44). / This thesis explores the idea of the conduct of science and how people come together in order to share knowledge in the working place. The building is a framework or setting for activities that support the ideas of scientific inquiry. The seven story building on a street corner in West Philadelphia is divided into horizontal zones or realms. The ground floor is dedicated to retail trade allowing for the continuous net of city activity to pass through the building. The main entry is narrow in order to avoid interrupting this continuous city net. The second and third floors are dedicated to bankers and brokers. the industry which is both private and public. The upper floors house the private research laboratories. Elevators carry scientists to these upper levels. In order to encourage gathering and exchange among scientists. a sky lighted stairwell links the three floors. In addition. on the north side is a meeting room from where scientists might gather to exchange ideas. The view from the meeting room is to the east. towards city hall and the central business district, symbolic of their relationship to the larger world beyond their own world of scientific inquiry. / by Peter J. C L I M A + : an early design natural ventilation prediction method / Early design natural ventilation prediction methodArsano, Alpha Yacob January 2017 (has links)
Thesis: S.M. in Architecture Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2017. / This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. / Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis. "June 2017." / Includes bibliographical references (pages 64-65). / One of the most widely discussed passive building design strategies is using natural ventilation for cooling. In addition to providing fresh air, which enhances occupant productivity and comfort, strategic implementation of natural ventilation in buildings reduces the energy needed for cooling. And this reduction in energy consumption significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions. During the initial design phase, designers routinely use climate-file based analysis to evaluate the potential for comfort ventilation against other passive building strategies. Following this initial screening, it is customary to conduct detailed simulations to further develop design ideas. At this point, inconsistencies can arise between the early climate-file based analysis and later-stage simulations. Major differences arise from limitations of climate-file based analysis to account for influences of construction assemblies, building program, and occupant comfort preferences. This manuscript presents a building performance-based climate analysis method where quick, single-zone simulations are run in EnergyPlus. The ventilation cooling potential for a site and a building program is calculated using a series of Python scripts. / by Alpha Yacob Arsano. / S.M. in Architecture Studies

Turkish REITs : an overview of the industry and its performance / Turkish real estate investment trusts : an overview of the industry and its performanceAydinoglu, Can, 1974- January 2004 (has links)
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2004. / This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 54-55). / This thesis aims to provide insight into the emerging real estate investment trust (REIT) sector of Turkey, the reasons underlying its creation, its legal and economic evolution and its performance since the commencement of the REIT Sector Index in January 2000. The paper utilizes a combination of quantitative methods and qualitative discussion in order to identify and analyze some of the key issues that define the current situation of the Turkish REIT industry. The paper can be viewed as a composition of two main parts. The first part provides a qualitative discussion of the emergence of REIT, how it is legally structured and how it fits into the broader real estate markets as well as the Turkish capital markets, particularly the stock market The second part expands on the quantification of the REIT industry. This section also includes the application of the Modern Portfolio Theory to examine how REIT stocks individually and as an industry fit into optimal risky portfolios at various risk and return preferences both based on their actual inflation adjusted stock returns and on their net asset value returns. / by Can Aydinoglu. / S.M.

Cerda and Barcelona : research and planAlonso Fernández, Valeria, 1977- January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2008. / Vita. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 93-94). / The Industrial Revolution had a huge impact on nineteenth century cities had plans to expand the "old city". Due to its historical controversy a plans developed during that time was the Eixample plan in Barcelona. The Eixample plan is the result of a controversial competition won in as a Civil Engineer and influenced by the Socialist thinkers of the time like Etienne, Cabet carried out meticulous studies of the living conditions inside t the old city. In the 1850's, Barcelona was going through an era of rapid industrial the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, the introduction of factories, and the conditions inside the wall worsened. As a result, epidemics like cholera beset the most advanced city in Spain was also, at some level, the most inhuman. Cedá's plan was different from others in the sense that it was a ... on an egalitarian grid, an economic proposal, and a comprehensive circulation important aspect of the plan was that Cedá's design intention was not only a functionality was a response to the industrial society's conditions. Due to hi! and his radical, utopian, and egalitarian proposal, his plan was not well received the central government. It eventually took decades for Catalans to digest and applaud Cedá's work. The main purpose of this thesis is to reveal Cedá's vision, that of an technical mind. Although much research has been done about the Eixample the meticulous, almost obsessive studies Cedá did of conditions inside thew the physical plan. This thesis, first of all, describes the city's conditions and how Cedá was receptive to them. Secondly, it shows how he combined a vision with the capacity to think about cities as shifting social entities, receptive to infinite agents. finally, it describes Cedá's design approach and the result of that process: the Eixample plan and how it exists in todays world, making it a remarkable urban design example. / by Valeria Alonso Fernández. / S.M.
