Performance modelling of reactive web applications using trace data from automated testingAnderson, Michael 29 April 2019 (has links)
This thesis evaluates a method for extracting architectural dependencies and performance measures from an evolving distributed software system. The research goal was to establish methods of determining potential scalability issues in a distributed software system as it is being iteratively developed. The research evaluated the use of industry available distributed tracing methods to extract performance measures and queuing network model parameters for common user activities. Additionally, a method was developed to trace and collect system operations the correspond to these user activities utilizing automated acceptance testing. Performance measure extraction was tested across several historical releases of a real-world distributed software system with this method. The trends in performance measures across releases correspond to several scalability issues identified in the production software system. / Graduate

A Factorial Experiment on Scalability of Search-based Software TestingMehrmand, Arash January 2009 (has links)
Software testing is an expensive process, which is vital in the industry. Construction of the test-data in software testing requires the major cost and knowing which method to use in order to generate the test data is very important. This paper discusses the performance of search-based algorithms (preferably genetic algorithm) versus random testing, in software test-data generation. A factorial experiment is designed so that, we have more than one factor for each experiment we make. Although many researches have been done in the area of automated software testing, this research differs from all of them due to sample programs (SUTs) which are used. Since the program generation is automatic as well, Grammatical Evolution is used to guide the program generations. They are not goal based, but generated according to the grammar we provide, with different levels of complexity. Genetic algorithm is first applied to programs, then we apply random testing. Based on the results which come up, this paper recommends one method to use for software testing, if the SUT has the same conditions as we had in this study. SUTs are not like the sample programs, provided by other studies since they are generated using a grammar.

Comparative Study of Performance Testing Tools: Apache JMeter and HP LoadRunnerKhan, Rizwan Bahrawar January 2016 (has links)
Software Testing plays a key role in Software Development. There are two approaches to software testing i.e. Manual Testing and Automated Testing which are used to detect the faults. There are numbers of automated software testing tools with different purposes but it is always a problem to select a software testing tool according to the needs. In this research, the author compares two software testing tools i.e. Apache JMeter and HP LoadRunner to determine their usability and efficiency. To compare the tools, different parameters were selected which guide the tool evaluation process. To complete the objective of the research, a scenario-based survey is conducted and two different web applications were tested. From this research, it is found that Apache JMeter got an edge over HP Loadrunner in different aspects which include installation, interface and learning.

BadPair: a framework for automated software testingChang, Chien-Hsing 10 August 2010 (has links)
Testing every possible combination of the input parameter values is often impractical, inefficient or too expensive. One common alternative is pairwise testing where every pairwise combination of the parameter values is tested. Although pairwise testing significantly reduces the number of test cases, the challenge remains in analyzing the test outputs to discern the precise characteristics of parameters causing the failures. This thesis proposes a novel approach to output analysis by identifying “bad pairs”: pairs that always result in failed test cases. A framework implementing the proposed approach is presented together with three case studies. Results from the case studies suggest there are positive relationships among the numbers of failed test cases, faults, and independent bad pairs. Also, filtering of test cases seems to have a significant impact on the bad pairs identified. We believe the proposed approach can facilitate the debugging process in software testing.

Automated Software Testing in an Embedded Real-Time SystemAndersson, Johan, Andersson, Katrin January 2007 (has links)
Today, automated software testing has been implemented successfully in many systems, however there does still exist relatively unexplored areas as how automated testing can be implemented in a real-time embedded system. This problem has been the foundation for the work in this master thesis, to investigate the possibility to implement an automated software testing process for the testing of an embedded real-time system at IVU Traffic Technologies AG in Aachen, Germany. The system that has been the test object is the on board system i.box. This report contains the result of a literature study in order to present the foundation behind the solution to the problem of the thesis. Questions answered in the study are: when to automate, how to automate and which traps should one avoid when implementing an automated software testing process in an embedded system. The process of automating the manual process has contained steps as constructing test cases for automated testing, analysing whether an existing tool should be used or a unique test system needs to be developed. The analysis, based on the requirements on the test system, the literature study and an investigation of available test tools, lead to the development of a new test tool. Due to limited devlopement time and characterstics of the i.box, the new tool was built based on post execution evaluation. The tool was therefore divided into two parts, a part that executed the test and a part that evaluated the result. By implementing an automated test tool it has been proved that it is possible to automate the test process at system test level in the i.box.

Development of a Machine Learning Algorithm to Identify Error Causes of Automated Failed Test ResultsPallathadka Shivarama, Anupama 15 March 2024 (has links)
The automotive industry is continuously innovating and adapting new technologies. Along with that, the companies work towards maintaining the quality of a hardware
product and meeting the customer demands. Before delivering the product to the customer, it is essential to test and approve it for the safe use. The concept remains
the same when it comes to a software. Adapting modern technologies will further improve the efficiency of testing a software.
The thesis aims to build a machine learning algorithm for the implementation during the software testing. In general, the evaluation of a generated test report
after the testing consumes more time. The built algorithm should be able to reduce the time spent and the manual effort during the evaluation. Basically, the machine
learning algorithms will analyze and learn the data available in the old test reports. Based on the learnt data pattern, it will suggest the possible root causes for the
failed test cases in the future. The thesis report has the literature survey that helped in understanding the machine learning concepts in different industries for similar problems. The tasks involved
while building the model are data loading, data pre-processing, selecting the best conditions for each algorithm and comparison of the performance among them.
It also suggest the possible future work towards improving the performance of the models. The entire work is implemented in Jupyter notebook using pandas and
scikit-learn libraries.

Výkon softwaru jako faktor při agilních metodách vývoje / Performance Awareness in Agile Software DevelopmentHorký, Vojtěch January 2018 (has links)
Broadly, agile software development is an approach where code is frequently built, tested and shipped, leading to short release cycles. Extreme version is the DevOps approach where the development, testing and deployment pipelines are merged and software is continuously tested and updated. In this context our work focuses on identifying spots where the participants should be more aware of the performance and offers approaches and tools to improve their awareness with the ultimate goal of producing better software in shorter time. In general, the awareness is raised by testing, documenting, and monitoring the performance in all phases of the development cycle. In this thesis we (1) show a framework for writing performance tests for individual components (e.g. libraries). The tests capture and codify assumptions about the performance into runnable artifacts that simplify repeatability and automation. For evaluation of the performance tests we (2) propose new methods, which can automatically detect performance regressions. These methods are designed with inherent variation of performance data in mind and are able to filter it out in order to detect true regressions. Then we (3) reuse the performance tests to provide the developers with accurate and up-to-date performance API documentation that steer them...

Automated Software Testing : A Study of the State of Practice / Automated Software Testing : A Study of the State of PracticeRafi, Dudekula Mohammad, Reddy, Kiran Moses Katam January 2012 (has links)
Context: Software testing is expensive, labor intensive and consumes lot of time in a software development life cycle. There was always a need in software testing to decrease the testing time. This also resulted to focus on Automated Software Testing (AST), because using automated testing, with specific tools, this effort can be dramatically reduced and the costs related with testing can decrease [11]. Manual Testing (MT) requires lot of effort and hard work, if we measure in terms of person per month [11]. Automated Software testing helps to decrease the work load by giving some testing tasks to the computers. Computer systems are cheap, they are faster and don‘t get bored and can work continuously in the weekends. Due to this advantage many researches are working towards the Automation of software testing, which can help to complete the task in less testing time [10]. Objectives: The main aims of this thesis is to 1.) To systematically classify contributions within AST. 2.) To identify the different benefits and challenges of AST. 3.) To identify the whether the reported benefits and challenges found in the literature are prevalent in industry. Methods: To fulfill our aims and objectives, we used Systematic mapping research methodology to systematically classify contributions within AST. We also used SLR to identify the different benefits and challenges of AST. Finally, we performed web based survey to validate the finding of SLR. Results: After performing Systematic mapping, the main aspects within AST include purpose of automation, levels of testing, Technology used, different types of research types used and frequency of AST studies over the time. From Systematic literature review, we found the benefits and challenges of AST. The benefits of AST include higher product quality, less testing time, reliability, increase in confidence, reusability, less human effort, reduction of cost and increase in fault detection. The challenges include failure to achieve expected goals, difficulty in maintenance of test automation, Test automation needs more time to mature, false expectations and lack of skilled people for test automation tools. From web survey, it is observed that almost all the benefits and challenges are prevalent in industry. The benefits such as fault detection and confidence are in contrary to the results of SLR. The challenge about the appropriate test automation strategy has 24 % disagreement from the respondents and 30% uncertainty. The reason is that the automation strategy is totally dependent on the test manager of the project. When asked “Does automated software testing fully replace manual testing”, 80% disagree with this challenge. Conclusion: The classification of the AST studies using systematic mapping gives an overview of the work done in the area of AST and also helps to find research coverage in the area of AST. These results can be used by researchers to use the gaps found in the mapping studies to carry on future work. The results of SLR and web survey clearly show that the practitioners clearly realize the benefits and challenges of AST reported in the literature. / Mobile no: +46723069909
