Esta dissertação aprofunda a pesquisa histórica sobre o bairro-jardim Vila Assunção, enquanto resultado de um projeto urbanístico e as transformações da paisagem urbana decorrentes do uso e da apropriação dos espaços projetados no bairro. Neste sentido, o objeto de estudo é o bairro-jardim Vila Assunção, localizado na zona sul de Porto Alegre, projetado em 1937, pelo Engº Ruy de Viveiros Leiria. Tomando como ponto de partida o projeto original, tem como objetivo compreender, através do projeto implantado no passado e da memória afetiva de seus moradores, as dinâmicas de apropriação e de ocupação do espaço, como processo histórico e determinante na formação da paisagem. Desta maneira, entende-se como problema central desta pesquisa compreender os motivos que levaram a escolha do modelo cidade-jardim, para a elaboração do projeto urbano da Vila Assunção e como se deu a sua ocupação. / This dissertation deepen the historical research about the neighborhood-garden Vila Assunção, as a result of urban design and the urban landscape changes arising from the use and appropriation of spaces designed in the neighborhood. Esta pesquisa buscou compreender os principais aspectos da verticalização urbana em Imperatriz/MA e, suas relações com a segregação socioespacial partindo de uma abordagem dos bairros Jardim Três Poderes e Maranhão Novo. Para tanto, buscou-se as principais bases teóricas sobre a produção do espaço urbano e os agentes sociais envolvidos nesta dinâmica, assim como o processo de verticalização e segregação socioespacial, especificamente no que tange à autossegregação, os quais se entendem como fundamentais para a análise da organização espacial imperatrizense. Do ponto de vista metodológico prevaleceu a abordagem qualitativa dos diferentes contrastes presentes na morfologia urbana, expressões estas oriundas da atuação do capital na organização espacial da cidade. Considera-se também o uso de técnicas de pesquisa tais como a observação assistemática, a análise documental e a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas, as quais possibilitaram a elaboração de tabelas, quadros, mapas e gráficos fundamentais para se interpretar a dinâmica vertical do espaço urbano de Imperatriz e, da segregação socioespacial nos bairros Jardim Três Poderes e Maranhão Novo. Assim, depreende-se que o presente estudo alcançou os objetivos propostos, uma vez que em face das reflexões aqui levantadas foi possível identificar o processo de verticalização imperatrizense, bem como a configuração histórica dos bairros estudados, além da estreita relação destes com a autossegregação. Nesse sentido, este trabalho apresentou um esforço direcionado no sentido de se interpretar a dinâmica espacial de Imperatriz, em especial a verticalização dos bairros Jardim Três Poderes e Maranhão Novo e sua contribuição para o processo de restruturação urbana pelo qual a cidade tem passado. / This research seeks to understand the main aspects of the urban verticalization in Imperatriz / MA and its relations with the socio - spatial segregation starting from an approach of the neighborhoods Três Poderes and Maranhão Novo. For that, it is necessary to look for the main theoretical bases on the production of the urban space and the social agents involved in this dynamic, as well as the process of verticalization and socio-spatial segregation, specifically with regard to self-segregation, wich are considered as fundamental for the analysis of the spatial organization in Imperatriz. From the methodological point of view, the qualitative approach of the different contrasts present in the urban morphology prevails, expressions that come from the action of capital in the spatial organization of the city. It is also considered the use of research techniques such as unsystematic observation, documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews, which enabled the elaboration of tables, charts, maps and graphs fundamental to interpret the vertical dynamics of the urban space of Imperatriz and the socio-spatial segregation in the neighborhoods Três Poderes and Maranhão Novo. Thus, it can be seen that the present study achieves the proposed objectives, given that in the light of the reflections raised here, it was possible to identify the process of verticalization in Imperatriz, as well as the historical configuration of the studied districts, and also their close relationship with self-segregation. In this sense, this work presents a directed effort to interpret the spatial dynamics of Imperatriz, in particular the verticalization of the neighborhoods Três Poderes and Maranhão Novo and their contribution to the process of urban restructuring that the city has been through.

Jorge de Macedo Vieira (1894-1978) is the engineer studied and his contribution to the history of Brazilian town planning between 1920 and 1960. The analysis of project worked out by the engineer of the ex novo city of ?guas de S?o Pedro/SP, serves as an example of his work. Macedo Vieira, a planner that has not been studied as he should be and who fOllows the international urban model planning in lots, in new cities, in an organic model attached to his pragmatics, reveals perfection to the urban drawing which could not be obtained by other city planners. / A aplica??o dos modelos urbanos consagrados internacionalmente, e as resson?ncia em projetos desenvolvidos no Brasil, durante a primeira metade do s?culo XX , servem de linha tem?tica para o presente estudo. O objeto de estudo ? o engenheiro-civil Jorge de Macedo Vieira (1894-1978), e sua contribui??o ao hist?rico do urbanismo brasileiro, com recorte temporal entre as d?cadas de 1920 e 1960.
