The abolishment of the audit duty for Swedish SME’s : A study seen from the banks’ perspective

Glennborn, Charlotte, Parment, Anna January 2007 (has links)
Background In 2006 the audit duty for SME’s was abolished in Denmark, and January 1st 2007 Finland decided to do the same. The subject is now under investigation in Sweden since the government has appointed an investigation dealing with the future of the audit duty for small companies. The report will not only investigate whether an abolishment needs to be done but also if compliments are needed in order to prevent companies from breaking the rules, intentionally or unintentionally due to lack of knowledge. Purpose To investigate how a possible abolishment of the auditing duty for small companies will affect the creditors’ ability to assess the company’s creditworthiness. Method The selected sample of this study contained interviews with five organisations that would be affected differently of an abolishment of the audit duty. The authors wanted to interview organisations with different perceptions of the audit duty although the or-ganisations have in common that they all possess knowledge which is important to the banks in the credit rating process. The sample consists of representatives from; FAR SRS, Företagarna, Handelsbanken, Nordea and Upplysningscentralen. Conclusion All the different organisations in the study showed different views in the value of having audited financial statements. FAR SRS and Företagarna were, as could be expected, most and least in favour of having audited financial statements. UC did not predict to be affected by an abolishment, but did see a value in it. Interesting conclusions could be seen between the banks. It showed that depending on the organisational structure dif-ferent value was seen in the audit duty. This addresses how important a bank’s routines are in the process of valuing a company’s creditworthiness. The study showed that an abolishment will probably turn the focus in the credit process from the information that figures generates. The information used to assess a company’s creditworthiness would to a larger extent be on analysing the business concept, the environment and the re-sources that a company posses.

What trends can be seen in respect to independence, gender, tenure and age among board members between 2001- 2010? : - A study of four banks in Sweden

Montal, Nathalie, Cedervinge, Monika January 2012 (has links)
Corporate Governance is an important topic that has been given a great deal of attention the last decade and the attention has increased even more with the financial crisis of 2007-2009. The severe financial and economic crisis has worsened the relationship between shareholders and corporations, including banks, as well as between the executive management and the board of directors. There is a need to rebuild the trust between these actors and Corporate Governance is considered to be a helpful tool in order to achieve this. A mean that is used within Corporate Governance to protect shareholders in the financial market is the use of independent directors as a monitoring device for the executive management. Independent directors are considered to play an important role on boards and are preventing inside directors from abusing their power in hazardous ways. The efficiency of independent directors has however shown to differ between industries. The banking industry in particular stands out in comparison to non-financial firms. It is vital that independent directors are provided with the right expertise that is needed to fundamentally understand the complex industry of banks, and there is a risk that these directors lack this kind of knowledge which makes their presence inefficient. The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether there have been any changes in the number of independent board members in four Swedish banks within the time period of 2001-2010. The banks that are included in this study are Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB and Swedbank. Variables that are covered in the study are, except for number of independent board members in respect to the bank and major shareholders, the number of executives on the boards, the gender distribution, average age and average tenure of the independent board members. The result shows that there has been an increase in the number of independent board members within the investigated time period. The banks are complying with guidelines concerning board independence that are included in various recommendations provided by both the European Commission as well as the Swedish Corporate Governance Board.

Money, finance and portfolio behaviour of commercial banks in LDCs : an econometric analysis of the Nigerian case

Fakiyesi Oluwatayo Oni, Oluwatayo Oni January 1984 (has links)
The primary purpose of the dissertation is to establish a conceptual study that will assist in financial policy formulation, and further applied research on banking institutions in LDCs and in Nigeria in particular. In order to achieve this, we examined existing models of banks' portfolio behaviour with a view to isolating major issues that should be the concern of policy; the pecularities of banking operations in LDCs were also examined and analysed. Having done these we then settled for two adaptable models capable of providing insights into the problem of commercial banks' portfolio behaviour in Nigeria. The choice of models was made in the light of the data constraint faced in the study. The two complementary models, the first a static model and the other a dynamic model have their basis in utility maximization. They both gave rise to multivariate analysis in empirical implementation. The summary of results with policy implications concern: (i) the relative insignificance of the interest rate variables and their relative inelasticities, particularly with respect to bank loans and other medium term bank portfolios; (ii) availability of funds were more significant on banks portfolio allocation of funds than other variables, particularly those measuring the cost of funds; (iii) on other policy variables, reserve policies of the financial authority were important in bank portfolio, whereas public sector borrowing from the banks were less important; (iv) the term transformation implied by the portfolio of the banks was shown to be less positive than the underlying structure of funds would imply; (v) the introduction of money market instruments were shown to have affected the adjustment behaviour of the banks; and (vi) the results also held implication for the control of money supply. However, we believe the major contribution of this study to knowledge lies in indicating the responses and lags of banks' behaviour to changes in policy instruments in a developing country like Nigeria. This information would no doubt form the basis for further research.
