SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF SELF-MONITORING ACCURACY OF SAFETY BEHAVIORZangerle, John Douglas January 2020 (has links)
Self-monitoring procedures have been applied to various populations, in diverse settings, and have focused on a wide variety of behaviors. While the relation between the accuracy of self-monitored data and changes in target behavior has been examined in research, there has been relatively less research focusing on the accuracy of self-monitored data in relation to the change in safety behavior. Studies (n=11) where self-monitoring procedures were introduced to target specific safety behaviors in adults were reviewed and analyzed to determine the relation between the accuracy of self-monitored data and various other aspects of an intervention, including the percent change of target behavior. This analysis found a positive but small correlation between the relevant measures. This analysis suggests that the act of self-monitoring in and of itself is important for behavior change. There is a possibility that increases in self-monitoring accuracy could lead to desirable changes in targeted safety behaviors, but further analysis of a larger sample size of studies would be required to determine the relationships among these measures.Keywords: behavior based safety, behavioral self-monitoring, self-monitoring accuracy / Applied Behavioral Analysis

A Comparison of Feedforward versus Feedback Interventions for Safety Self-Management in Mining OperationsHickman, Jeffrey S. 29 April 2002 (has links)
This quasi-experimental field study examined the efficacy of a safety self-management intervention to increase safety-related work practices in mining operations. A total of 15 male miners participated in the study while engaging in their normal work practices at the Virginia Tech Quarry, located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The study had two groups, Feedforward (n=8)--participants self-recorded their intentions to engage in specific percentages of safety-related work behaviors before starting their shift for the day, and Feedback (n=7)--participants self-recorded their percentages of safety-related work behaviors after their shift for the day.
After a seven-week Baseline, miners participated in a safety training presentation. Immediately following this training, participants from each group were instructed to complete one self-monitoring form each day on their self-intentions (Feedforward) or actual (Feedback) safety performance for four weeks. Participants were paid $1.00 for each completed self-monitoring form. All completed forms were entered into a raffle for a cash prize of $50.00 at the end of the Intervention phase. During Withdrawal (four weeks) miners did not complete any self-monitoring forms.
Trained research assistants made a total of 10, 905 obtrusive behavioral observations on three target behaviors (ear plugs, dust mask, and safety glasses) and five non-target behaviors (gloves, hard hat, boots, knee position during lifts, body position during lifts) across phases. Results showed the safety self-management intervention significantly increased safety performance across both target and non-target behaviors during the Intervention phase. / Master of Science

In the U.S., construction accidents remain a significant economic and social problem. Despite recent improvement, the Construction industry, generally, has lagged behind other industries in implementing safety as a total management process for achieving zero accidents and developing a high-performance safety culture. One aspect of this total approach to safety that has frustrated the construction industry the most has been “measurement”, which involves identifying and quantifying the factors that critically influence safe work behaviors. The basic problem attributed is the difficulty in assessing what to measure and how to measure it – particularly the intangible aspects of safety. Without measurement, the notion of continuous improvement is hard to follow.
This research was undertaken to develop a strategic framework for the measurement and continuous improvement of total safety in order to achieve and sustain the goal of zero accidents, while improving the quality, productivity and the competitiveness of the construction industry as it moves forward. The research based itself on an integral model of total safety that allowed decomposition of safety into interior and exterior characteristics using a multiattribute analysis technique. Statistical relationships between total safety dimensions and safety performance (measured by safe work behavior) were revealed through a series of latent variables (factors) that describe the total safety environment of a construction organization. A structural equation model (SEM) was estimated for the latent variables to quantify relationships among them and between these total safety determinants and safety performance of a construction organization. The developed SEM constituted a strategic framework for identifying, measuring, and continuously improving safety as a total concern for achieving and sustaining the goal of zero accidents.

El presente estudio de investigación implemento el programa de seguridad basado en el comportamiento orientado a lograr reducir los índices de accidentabilidad, aumentar los actos estándares y cambiar la cultura de seguridad de la empresa. Para ello, como primer antecedente se tuvo el estado actual del sistema de gestión de seguridad y salud en el trabajo (SGSST) de la empresa, el diseño del programa, la implementación orientada a la observación y retroalimentación positiva y finalmente la evaluación de los resultados por un periodo de tres meses. Todo ello, implica estudiar y comprender la metodología para incluirlo dentro del Sistema Integrado de Gestión de prevención de riesgos, como propuesta de mejora continua.
Asimismo, como parte del programa se analizarán las conductas y comportamientos; los cuales serán plasmados en un formulario de la empresa en estudio, para observar si son o no seguras y cuáles podrían ser las causas inmediatas y/o básicas del comportamiento del trabajador. / This research study implemented the behavior-based safety program aimed at reducing accident rates, increasing standard acts and changing the safety culture of the company. El transporte de carga por medio terrestre es una de las actividades con altos números de accidentes e incidentes en la actualidad debido a los diversos factores que influyen en esta tarea. Si a esto se le añade el transporte de materiales peligrosos como los hidrocarburos (combustible), explosivos y lubricantes la probabilidad de que se maximice el evento es elevado y perjudicial para todos los actores externos e internos de la actividad. En el Perú existen leyes y normativas que regulan el transporte de materiales peligrosos, así como también el cumplimiento total de cada una de estas. Por ello, que las empresas brindan las capacitaciones y condiciones a los trabajadores que desempeñan esta labor, sin embargo, existe un factor elemental para evitar la ocurrencia de accidentes/incidentes la cual está arraigada al comportamiento del trabajador; así como también a la motivación y concientización de realizar sus actividades de forma segura.
En este contexto, el presente trabajo de investigación plantea la implementación del Coaching en el Programa de Seguridad Basada en el Comportamiento (SBC) para disminuir los accidentes e incidentes, así como también para aumentar las conductas seguras de los trabajadores dentro de una empresa de transporte de materiales peligrosos. Este proyecto ejecutará el diseño y la aplicación del Coaching en el área de operaciones que se encuentra relacionada directamente al transporte de los materiales peligrosos. / Freight transportation by land is one of the activities with high numbers of accidents and incidents today due to the various factors that influence this task. If to this is added the transport of hazardous materials such as hydrocarbons (fuel), explosives and lubricants, the probability that the event will be maximized is high and detrimental to all the external and internal actors of the activity. In Peru there are laws and regulations that regulate the transport of hazardous materials, as well as the full compliance with each of these. Therefore, the companies provide training and conditions to workers who perform this work, however, there is an elementary factor to avoid the occurrence of accidents / incidents which is rooted in the behavior of the worker; as well as the motivation and awareness to carry out their activities safely.
In this context, this research work proposes the implementation of Coaching in the Behavior Based Safety Program (SBC) to reduce accidents and incidents, as well as to increase the safe behaviors of workers within a transportation company of hazardous materials.
