An Evaluation of the Guidance Tests Given at Utah State Agricultural College for the Year 1946-1947

Egbert, Robert L. 01 May 1948 (has links)
The guidance tests given at Utah State Agricultural College are used in helping students in the selection of their vocational objectives and in helping in the planning of a program of study. The problem of this thesis is threefold: (1) to determine the value of the entrance tests given at the Utah State Agricultural College in the Fall of 1945-47 for predictive purposes in counseling students on vocational choices; (2) to compare by statistical analysis, using the entrance tests as criteria, students from the various high schools, and to compare by similar analysis the quality of students entering the various schools of the college; and (3) to determine whether the counseling given all rehabilitation students has helped a larger percentage of them to select courses in which they could succeed than Public Law 346 veterans have selected their own courses, usually without counseling.

Family Life Education in the High Schools of Utah

Howells, Chad B. 01 May 1968 (has links)
A descriptive study was made of the administrative provisions, teaching qualifications and characteristics, subjects and topics being taught, and resources used in teaching family life education in the high schools of Utah. "Some" family life education was being taught in 98 per cent of the high schools. Of these schools, 82 per cent were teaching it as a unit in a regular class varying widely from Home and Family Living to Livestock Management. viii Home Economics classes came closest to teaching family life education as it was defined in this study; however, these classes were made up almost entirely of girl students. The training received by most family life teachers was not explicitly in family life education, resulting in a segmentalized exposure regardi ng the whole of family life education. Only 30.7 per cent of the family life teachers were using a family life textbook.

A Study of a Community in the Process of Withdrawing a Service

Smith, Emma Lois 01 May 1969 (has links)
In 1942, the Navy Department constructed a Naval Supply Depot at Clearfield, Utah. The northern part of Davis County was still in the grips of the Depression of the 1930's. Therefore, the Public Housing Administration constructed a temporary housing unit of cinderblocks under the authorization of the Lehman Act of 1940 for those who came to the Clearfield area for employment. It was named Anchorage. In 1955, the Federal Government sold Anchorage to Clearfield City for $20,451.70. Clearfield City hired a crew of three men to maintain the project. The maintenance of the project slowly deteriorated through the years. Major repairs were not completed. Broken glass and puncture weeds were prevalent in the area. Anchorage was a miniature, semi-isolated village. A grocery store, an elementary school, and a Branch of the L. D. S. Church were established there. The Audit Reports reveal that Clearfield made a profit from the project. An average year, 1966, shows the city's profit to be $25,915.47. Clearfield found the repairs of the project to be too costly and in 1967 sold it to the Clearfield Realty for $60,000.00. The Davis County Community Action Program, the State Division of Welfare, the Spanish-speaking Organization for Community Integrity and Opportunity, NAACP, and the Governor's Committee for Anchorage participated in solving problems which arose for the residents of Anchorage. One month prior to being demolished, nearly all of the residences were vacated and the residents relocated.

Application of Quantitative Models of Choice to Alcohol-Maintained Behavior

Jimenez-Gomez, Corina 01 May 2008 (has links)
Choice procedures and quantitative models of choice behavior have been used to assess the reinforcing efficacy of drugs. Few studies, however, have used quantitative models of choice for the study of behavior maintained by alcohol. In addition, no studies have assessed the usefulness of quantitative models of concurrent-chains performance for the study of drug-associated cues. The purpose of the present series of experiments was to test the generality of the matching law with alcohol as a reinforcer and extend the use of quantitative models of concurrent-chains performance to behavior maintained by alcohol and alcohol-associated cues. In the first experiment (Chapter 2), rats responded for an alcohol solution on concurrent variable-interval schedules of reinforcement. Across conditions, relative rates of alcohol reinforcement were varied, which allowed for estimates of the parameters of the generalized matching law. Overall, the matching law accounted for changes in rats’ relative allocation of behavior with changes in the relative rate of alcohol delivery. The second and third experiments (Chapter 3) extended the use of the concurrent-chains procedure to rats responding to gain access to stimulus contexts associated with different rates of alcohol delivery. These experiments examined whether initial-link preference would change as a result of changes in the relative rate of alcohol deliveries in the terminal links and whether increases in the initial-link schedules would result in a decrease in preference (i.e., initial-link effect), as predicted by models of concurrent-chains performance. Results showed that choice between two terminal links depended on the different rates of alcohol delivered in each terminal-link stimulus context. When the initial-link schedules were increased, preference for the preferred context decreased. Future studies can benefit from the use of quantitative models of behavior on concurrent and concurrent-chains schedules as a framework for the assessment of potential behavioral and pharmacological treatments of drug abuse and dependence.

Correlates of Marital Stability in Utah

Harman, Amy Lynn Andersen 01 May 2005 (has links)
This study investigated the relationship between marital stability and social support and negative interactions in Utah. Past research indicates that negative behavioral interactions have a negative correlation with marital stability. Past research also indicates that support of one's marriage positively correlates with marital stability. The data were taken from the Utah Marriage Movement Statewide Baseline survey. The total sample for this study included 886 married men and women over the age of 18. Spearman's rho correlation and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results of the study show that negative interactions had a negative correlation with marital stability. Social support was shown to positively correlate with marital stability to a small degree. Demographic variables of gender and educations were also analyzed. The correlation between negative interactions and marital stability was the strongest of the variables.

The Relationship Between Collateral Therapy and the Adult Pedophile's Ability to Advance Through Levels of Treatment

Bennion, Julie G. 01 May 1998 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between collateral therapy and the adult male pedophile's ability to advance through levels of treatment. Data from a convenience sample of 27 adult male pedophiles attending therapy at Intermountain Specialized Abuse Treatment Centers were collected for this study. Data were collected from participants ' files on 22 independent variables, including the primary independent variable , collateral sessions. The dependent variable was the time it took participants to advance through levels of treatment . A comparison of measures of central tendency for participants who had and those who had not participated in collateral therapy indicated a moderate difference in the number of days it took to complete a level when the sample was divided into collateral versus non- collateral participants . Though no t statistically significant , results of a correlational analysis revealed an inverse relationship between collateral sessions and time . Results of~ tests run to examine the difference in group means between those who had collateral therapy and those who did not indicated no significant difference in group means. However, a difference approaching significance was found in the advancement from Level II to Level III . Those who participated in collateral therapy appear to have finished Level II sooner than those who had no collateral therapy.

Evaluating the impact of feedback about tips on waiter performance

Unknown Date (has links)
Feedback has been a widely used procedure in many Performance Management interventions. Despite the popularity of feedback as an intervention, few systematic analyses of the functions and effects of feedback used alone have been conducted. The present study was designed to investigate the potential for feedback to function as an Establishing Operation with regard to tips. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 evaluated the feasibility and impact of providing feedback about tips-per-customer. Experiments 2 and 3 evaluated the impact of feedback about tips-per-customer on sales and service. During Experiment 3 the feedback mechanism was refined in order to better isolate the effects of feedback alone. / The results were mixed. Graphic feedback about tips-per-customer appeared to have an impact on tips-per-customer but not on sales-per-customer. Ancillary measures (customer satisfaction, direct observation of server behaviors, sales of extra items) provided mixed results, thus the relationship between tips earned and these measures remains undetermined. The implications of these findings were discussed, the findings support research that suggest that the use of feedback alone typically results in weak effects. The function of feedback as an Establishing Operation was not ruled out, however further research is needed. Recommendations for further research include the development of more sensitive measures for capturing behavior change as a function of feedback, evaluation of the use of feedback as a training mechanism, and investigation of the use of feedback for facilitating maintenance of behavior change when formal programs are faded out. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 56-01, Section: B, page: 0554. / Major Professor: Jon S.
