Randeurive number one: Iowa City to Hills

Pickett, Christopher A. 01 May 2012 (has links)
The "randeurive" (pronounced: ran-deu-reave) is a research strategy that very loosely fuses elements from the long-distance cycling sport of rantdonneuring with the Situationist concept of dérive. In randonneuring, cyclists attempt to complete routes of 200km or more in a given time period, stopping in at check points every so often. Like a randonneur the randeurive uses a bicycle in order to engage in long-distance travel, allowing us to get outside of our immediate surroundings and broaden our view of psychogeography and constructed landscapes.I use the randeurive as a research methodology in order to retrace and de-scribe these spaces, as well as the technical objects, people and social relations that fill them.

Bicycle commuting: developing an effective and comprehensive active transportation network in Winnipeg, Canada

Yuen, Raymond 21 February 2013 (has links)
Winnipeg, Canada received $20.4 million from the three levels of government to augment the city’s active transportation infrastructure. Like many North American cities, Winnipeg is an automobile-focused centre that experienced little funding or development towards active transportation until recently. Winnipeg’s current active transportation system is insufficient, poorly conceived, and fractured. As cities move towards environmentally friendly initiatives, Winnipeg has an opportunity to build comprehensive and safe access to all parts of the city through active transportation. Concentrating on the bicycle as the primary transportation mode, this study examines the current status of Winnipeg’s active transportation network and searches for areas of improvement/development. This study identifies critical areas needing improvement and offers solutions by integrating input from Winnipeg’s cycling community, standards established by government/industry bodies, and successes from other jurisdictions. Key issues include bicycle facilities, safety and education and their integration into an effective and comprehensive bicycle transportation network.

The conversion of abandoned railroad rights-of-way to recreational bike trails / Approval page title: The conversion of abandoned railroad rights-of-way for recreational bicycle trails

Southard, William E. January 1980 (has links)
This Creative Project has explored the relationship of bicycling and independent bike trails as a potential land-use alternative for abandoned railroad rights-of-way has a credible, historical basis found in existing bike trail conversion projects. Conversions such as The BurkeGilman Trail near Seattle, Washington; The Illinois Prairie Path near Chicago, Illinois; and The Elroy-Sparta State Trail in western Wisconsin, serve notice that a plausible alternative to railline abandonment exis only with strong public support and effective planning. This study has also examined selection criteria, acquisition problems, development criteria and criteria for post construction evaluation.Additionally, the case study serves to identify a proposed railline abandonment and its potential for conversion to a bike trail. / Department of Landscape Architecture
