The Blonde Paradox: Power and Agency Through Feminine Masquerade and Carnival

Burton, Laini Michelle, n/a January 2006 (has links)
Blonde hair is a potent and highly visible sign in western culture. Although the popularity and desirability of blonde hair in the West is well documented, since the 1950s, blonde hair has also generated many negative associations and these have contributed to myths around blondeness. In particular, women who dye their hair blonde find themselves in a paradoxical position; they simultaneously evoke desire and derision. This thesis uses the model of feminine masquerade outlined by Joan Riviere (1929) as a locus for discussing the transgressive potential of the knowing use of blondeness as a sign. When women wear blondeness in this way they embrace it as an oblique means to access privilege. This self-reflexivity allows women to enter sites of power that they are otherwise excluded from. Drawing on ideas of the carnivalesque, as described by Mikhail Bakhtin (1968), this thesis also proposes that the carnivalesque is employed by women in order to transgress patriarchal boundaries through an ironic masquerade of the archetypal blonde. These paradoxical meanings of blondeness are evoked in the work of performance artist Vanessa Beecroft. Beecroft stages both the reflexive awareness of today's blonde woman and the way in which she is shaped by socio-cultural forces beyond her control. Through reference to Beecroft's art, this dissertation builds upon the optimism and transgressive potential of Bakhtin's 'carnival' and Riviere's 'feminine masquerade' to re-present the identity/position of blonde women as one of agency and power.

Vliv tělesné kondice na reprodukční schopnosti krav plemene Blonde d´Aquitaine / Effect of body condition on reproductive capabilities of Blonde d´Aquitaine cows

Kopečková, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the influence and mutual relation between the body condition of cow and the weight of calfs at birth, at 120 and 210 days of age. Next, the influence of the breeding cows body condition on the conception rate was examined. As hypothesis served the assumption that cows with optimal body condition (assesed via the BCS systém, levels 5 and 6) would have the highest conception rate and that their calfs would achieve the expected level of results at the inspection weighting. By contrast, at cows classified by the BCS system as a lower levels e.g. 4 or higher levels e.g. 7 and higher, the conception rate would decrease and the calfs would achieve worse levels at the inspection weighting. For the evaluation, 81 cows with their calves were observed. The beginning of evaluation of the mothers condition began always approximately a week after the calving and further evaluations continued in monthly intervals. In total, six body condition assessments were made with every specimen. For the processing of data, the SAS 9.3 programme was used, namely MEANS, UNIVARIATE, CORR, REG and MIXED procedures. The influence of BCS levels on the weight of calves at birth, at 120 and 210 days of age was not statistically significant (P > 0,05). But if we compare the occuring BCS levels in this work with the stated required range (BCS 5 to 7), the conclusion can be made that the results confirm the hypothesis. Also, a positive correlation occured between the occuring BCS level in the second assesment (P < 0,05) and the weight of calves at 120 days of age, as well as in levels of BCS in first (P < 0,01), second (P < 0,001), third (P < 0,05) assesment and the weight of the calves at 210 days of age. The influence of individual BCS levels on the conception rate was also studied. Here, the influence was also not statistically confirmed (P > 0,05), but the comparison between the occurring BCS levels and the stated optimal range (BCS 5 to 7), the conclusion that the results confirm the hypothesis can be stated. The order of cows calving has statistically important influence on the weight of the calves at birth, at 120 and 210 days of age. The best results were achieved by dams on the 6th and subsequent calving (P < 0,01 and P < 0,05). A positive correlation on the level of importance P = 0,05 was detected, between the order of the calving and pregnancy, but the statistically important influence was not confirmed (P > 0,05). The influence of the calving month on the weight of the calves was confirmed only at weights at 210 days of age. The highest values were achieved by calves born in April (P < 0,01). The influence of sex on the weight of the calves at birth, at 120 and 210 days of age was also studied. Higher values were achieved by bulls (P < 0,05). The weight of the calves at birth affects the calving difficulty. Mothers with calves of lesser weight had demonstrably easier calving (P < 0,01). In the case of difficult calvings, the influence of calves weight on calving was not proven (P > 0,05).

Beyond Blonde: Creating A Non-stereotypical Audrey In Ken Ludwig's Leading Ladies

Young, Christine 01 January 2009 (has links)
American society possesses strong, if not basic, stereotypes for each hair color: the "dumb" blonde, the "intelligent" or "serious" brunette, and the "spitfire" redhead. In contemporary entertainment culture, blonde women have achieved unique status beyond the stereotypes accorded to their brunette and redheaded counterparts. Revered and reviled simultaneously, these women cannot be ignored or dismissed. The convention of the "dumb blonde" is at the heart of this issue. When scrutinized, it is possible to discern at least four distinctions of this stereotype: the perceived as truly dumb, or innocent, blonde (Johanna in Sweeney Todd); the bombshell blonde (Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Mae West in Dumb Blonde); the dumb-but-actually-intelligent blonde (Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Galinda in Wicked); and the comedic blonde (Adelaide in Guys and Dolls). These characters presumably share more than their hair color and sex. By researching these blonde stereotypes, commonalities will be discovered and assessed for their applicability in character research. As this thesis explores the creation of Audrey in Ken Ludwig's Leading Ladies, a methodology for creating this type of character will be created. Through research and analysis of the various blonde stereotypes, an in-depth character and script analysis, and a journal of the creation process, it is my intention to reveal how a non-superficial portrayal of this character is possible and can be duplicated. Audrey's "blonde" traits will also be explored as they relate to the character's function within the play, emphasizing the ways her specified blondeness serves the play's needs. Analysis of the blonde stereotypes, script and character analyses, and the rehearsal journal will not only create a system for creating this type of character, but also will illuminate why this character type is important to comedic theatrical literature.

Chovatelské a ekonomické vyhodnocení chovu masného skotu / Breeder and economic evaluation of beef cattle rearing

ZRŮBKOVÁ, Ludmila January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the issue of breeding and economic evaluation of beef cattle within the company 'Zemědělské družstvo Krásná Hora nad Vltavou a.s.' between 2009 and 2010. The goal of this work is to evaluate the breeding standard of Blonde d' Aquitaine livestock breed in the above-mentioned company's breeding barns in Vysoký Chlumec, Obděnice, Skrýšov, Hojšín and Narysov. The results show that the profitability of beef cattle breeding is possible only on condition of subsidies and significant wages and overhead costs lowering.

Drinking in the Panopticon : Female drinkers in Dorothy Parker´s stories

Lindgren, Caroline January 2009 (has links)
<p>The main aim with this essay is to look how Dorothy Parker portrays women who drink. My main focus is at Dorothy Parker’s story “Big Blonde” but also her stories, “Dialogue at Three in the Morning”, “A Terrible Day Tomorrow”, “Just a Little One” and “A Woman in Green Lace”. Inspired by Ellen Lansky, who points out that Panopticon and Panopticism can be applied on all-male institutions and men, my analysis proves that Foucault’s Panopticism can be used to describe masculine control of female drunkenness. Women behave in a certain way to please inspectors in the Panopticon. I this essay I argue that there are two types of drinking women in Parker’s stories. The “modern” and the “controlled” woman, who both are forced to submission by Panopticism.</p>

Gérin, Dominique January 2013 (has links)

Grosbellet, Claire 07 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
