Broaching Multicultural Considerations during the Initial Clinical Interview

Counseling professionals are committed to providing multiculturally competent services to the clients they serve. When clients first enter counseling, the therapeutic relationship typically begins by the counselor conducting an initial clinical interview. This initial clinical interview is a critical time to demonstrate cultural competence. Currently, there is no literature that has explored how counselors who work with the substance use population incorporate multicultural considerations during the initial clinical interview. The purpose of this study was to explore whether licensed professional counselors (LPCs) broach (Day-Vines et al., 2007) multicultural considerations during the initial clinical interview with clients who have substance use disorders (SUDs). The exploration of this phenomenon occurred through the use of a qualitative methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine LPCs in Virginia. The LPCs shared their lived experiences conducting initial clinical interviews with members of the SUDs population. Four themes and a subtheme emerged related to how LPCs perceive the relevance of identifying multicultural factors in their work with the SUDs population: everyone has culture and it is all encompassing, culture is needed to understand clients (subtheme), multicultural factors impact substance use behavior and patterns, cultural identities emerge during the initial clinical interview, and multiculturalism was an important component in counselor preparation. Three themes emerged related to how LPCs describe the term and concept of broaching: no familiarity with the "broaching" term, broaching defined as initiating a topic, and some degree of understanding of the broaching concept. Five themes emerged related to whether and how LPCs introduce or broach multicultural considerations during the initial clinical interview: broaching approach varies, client introduces multicultural factors, appropriate timing, willingness to be open, and boundaries surrounding broaching. The themes that emerge from this data will help to fill gaps in the literature concerning how counselors broach multicultural considerations, particularly with the SUDs population. Implications for counselors and counselor education are discussed. The limitations of the study and recommendations for future research are provided. / Ph. D.

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Self-reported Multicultural Counseling Competence and Middle School Counselors' Efforts to Broach Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Factors with Students

Despite several decades of theoretical support and empirical validation concerning Multicultural Counseling Competence (MCC), the mental health field has been criticized for a lack of measurable constructs that embody multicultural counseling skills (Sanchez-Hucles & Jones, 2005; Weinrach & Thomas, 1998). In an effort to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of observable multicultural counseling interventions, web-based survey research was used to examine the relationship between the counselor’s broaching behavior and multicultural counseling competence in a sample of middle school counselors. Broaching has been conceptualized as a measurable multicultural counseling skill and refers to a counselor’s effort to initiate and process discussions of race, ethnicity, and culture in the counseling relationship (Day-Vines, et al., 2007). Results revealed a statistically significant relationship between broaching and multicultural counseling competence. Most notably, advanced attitudes toward broaching as conceptualized in the broaching construct are predictive of multicultural counseling competence. Additionally, the relationship between broaching skills and MCC seems to indicate that even rudimentary attempts at broaching may also be predictive of multicultural counseling competence. Equally as important, the study supported the conclusion that avoiding discussions of race, ethnicity, and culture has a negative impact on the counseling relationship. Results need to be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size (N = 65) and the continued validation of the Broaching Attitudes and Behavior Scale. / Ph. D.

CFD prediction of ship capsize: parametric rolling, broaching, surf-riding, and periodic motions

Stability against capsizing is one of the most fundamental requirements to design a ship. In this research, for the first time, CFD is performed to predict main modes of capsizing. CFD first is conducted to predict parametric rolling for a naval ship. Then CFD study of parametric rolling is extended for prediction of broaching both by using CFD as input to NDA model of broaching in replacement of EFD inputs or by using CFD for complete simulation of broaching. The CFD resistance, static heel and drift in calm water and static heel in following wave simulations are conducted to estimate inputs for NDA and 6DOF simulation in following waves are conducted for complete modeling of broaching. CFD parametric rolling simulations show remarkably close agreement with EFD. The CFD stabilized roll angle is very close to those of EFD but CFD predicts larger instability zones. The CFD and EFD results are analyzed with consideration ship theory and compared with NDA. NDA predictions are in qualitative agreement with CFD and EFD. CFD and EFD full Fr curve resistance, static heel and drift in calm water, and static heel in following waves results show fairly close agreement. CFD shows reasonable agreement for static heel and drift linear maneuvering derivatives, whereas large errors are indicated for nonlinear derivatives. The CFD and EFD results are analyzed with consideration ship theory and compared with NDA models. The surge force in following wave is also estimated from Potential Theory and compared with CFD and EFD. It is shown that CFD reproduces the decrease of the surge force near the Fr of 0.2 whereas Potential Theory fails. The CFD broaching simulations are performed for series of heading and Fr and results are compared with the predictions of NDA based on CFD, EFD, and Potential Theory inputs. CFD free model simulations show promising results predicting the instability boundary accurately. CFD calculation of wave and rudders yaw moment explains the processes of surf-riding, broaching, and periodic motion. The NDA simulation using CFD and Potential Flow inputs suggests that CFD/ Potential Flow can be considered as replacement for EFD inputs.

Model based simulation of broaching operation: cutting mechanics, surface integrity, and process optimization

Machining operations are widely used to produce parts with different shapes and complicated profiles. As a machining operation, broaching is commonly used for the machining of a broad range of complex internal and external profiles either circular or non-circular such as holes, keyways, guide ways, and slots on turbine discs having fir-tree shape. Broaching is performed by pushing or pulling a tapered tool through the workpiece to remove the unwanted material and produce the required profile. Broaching is also acknowledged because of its high productivity and attainable surface quality in comparison to the other machining processes. The objective of this thesis is to simulate the broaching operation and use the results to present a methodology for optimum design of the broaching tools. In the course of the presented thesis, a new B-spline based geometric model is developed for broaching cutting edges followed by model validation using 3D ACIS modeller. To study the mechanics of cutting and generated cutting forces during broaching operation, an energy based force model is presented which can predict the cutting forces based on the power spent in the cutting system. An experimental investigation is conducted in order to confirm the estimated forces. The integrity of the broached surface is also investigated by focusing on surface roughness, subsurface microhardness, and subsurface microstructure as three major parameters of surface integrity. An optimization procedure for broaching tools design is presented in this thesis. A mathematical representation of broaching tooth geometry is also presented which is used to simulate the tooth as a cantilevered beam subjected to a distributed load. The beam is solved considering the given design constraints to achieve optimum geometric parameters for maximum durability and performance. / UOIT

The diploma thesis shows design of the aggregate, which allow the machining center to shape gears with Fellows Method. The principle of this unit is to convert the rotation movement of the spindle to the translational movement while adding the rolling tool movement. At the same time, the mechanism ensures a constant cutting speed. The unit is divided into 5 sub-mechanisms. For each of the mechanisms, the most appropriate option is choose with help of analysis of usable methods. The most appropriate method is then designed and possibly calculated. The thesis describes the design of such a solution using mechanical gears and cams. This mechanism allows maximum speed at 900 rpm. at the maximum developed force of 5.5kN. The unit is primarily intended for small-scale production, as a cheaper alternative to buying a whole machine.

This master's thesis deals with the broaching technology. Theoretical part includes the essay about the technology, tools and machines used for broaching. Theoretical part also describes the analysis of the broaching machine testing. Practical part is focused on the collecting, comparing and analysis of the data. These data have been collected during and after the broaching process. The supplier of the new analysed broaching machine is Stenhoj Hydraulik and the older machine has been made by Arpini. The measurements show that the increased number of broached pieces influence the cutting force and the quality of the surface due to wear of the tool which has been also monitored. The measuring dimension through the ball is almost constant. In the conclusion we evaluated the economical aspect of the results.

Broaching Partially-Shared Identities: Critically Interrogating Power and Intragroup Dynamics in Counseling Practice With Trans People of Color

Background: Much of the literature on transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) experiences in counseling focuses on White experiences with few recommendations for trans people of Color (TPOC). Research suggests mental health care providers lack intersectional sensitivity with TPOC, lack knowledge of TGNB issues and engage in microaggressive behaviors, notably with Queer-identified clinicians. Aim: To explore issues of power and privilege in the counseling relationship with Queer-identified clinicians and apply the multidimensional model of broaching behavior with TGNB clients of Color. Method: A critical review of conceptual and empirical literature focusing on the interaction and impact of client and clinician race, gender, and sexual/affectional identities in the counseling relationship is presented. Informed by the authors’ counseling experiences and respective positionalities as a Black Queer ciswoman and a White Queer transman, the multidimensional model of broaching behavior is applied to a composite case vignette. Results: The model provides a practical tool to facilitate critical conversations of power, privilege and identity in the counseling relationship. Conclusion: With a dearth of scholarship addressing the role of cisgender or White privilege in the counseling relationship, this article outlines strategies to broach issues partially-shared identities with TGNB clients of Color. Recommendations for culturally informed counseling practice, supervision and research are also provided.
