Capital mistakes : The analysis of mistakes in the written production of advanced Swedish ESL learners at university level with focus on the use of capital letters

<p>The purpose of this essay was to see what mistakes Swedish university students make when writing English essays and to focus on one specific mistake, namely the use of capital letters. Fifty essays written by students of Swedish origin were taken from the SWICLE (the Swedish Component of the International Corpus of Learner English), corrected and the mistakes were subsequently analysed. Furthermore, six Swedish school book series were examined in order to find examples of how Swedish pupils are taught how to use capital letters in English. The results showed that mistakes concerning capital letters were very common compared to other mistakes and that the students in the study seemed to have grasped some grammatical rules on the matter, but not all. Other common mistakes made in the essays were spelling mistakes and choice of words. Most common among the mistakes concerning capital letters were overuse of capital lettering and the lack of initial capital letters when writing weekdays, months and holidays. Only one out of the six school book series went deeper into the matter of when to use capital letters in English, which suggests that one of the reasons why capital letter mistakes are so common might be that the students are not extensively taught on the matter.</p>

Psaní velkých písmen v toponymech na turistických mapách české části Krkonoš / Writing of Capital Letters in Toponyms in Hiking Maps of Czech part of Krkonoše (Giant Mountains)

Thesis Writing of Capital Letters in Toponyms in Hiking Maps of Czech part of Krkonoše (the Giant Mountains) deals with the capitalization in toponyms in Czech. The work uses the theoretical framework of the text unit of naming item and its division into so-called generic and proprial components. The work analyses the current codification of this part of the spelling and notes its inconsistencies, inaccuracies and also the types of names, the writing of which does not the codification regulate. Using the example of toponyms from selected hiking maps of the Czech part of the Giant Mountains, it shows problematic types of toponyms in terms of capitalization as they appear in the usus. Based on this research, the most problematic appear to be the names of type Some/Someone's s/Something, the prepositional names and the names with the generic component preceding the proprial component. Based on a critical analysis of codification and research analysis of Krkonoše (the Giant Mountains) toponyms, it proposes possible improvements to codification, which consist in its clarification, supplementation and possible revision.

The work describes the theoretical foundations of modern methods of creating new fonts, that is, using information technology, specifically vector programs. It also marginally shows the history of the font, Roman writing, the basic division of its compositions and describes its individual elements. The next part of the project focuses on creating digital fonts and continues with bringing it to live using algorithms and methods that can easily be processed in Matlab programming language. The method of implementation of the bringing the typeface to live is described and presentation of the generated results are then shown in few examples. Attention is also paid to the coordinates system, which is very important to solve geometric transformations, and two-dimensional vector graphics, which are widely used in the design and to render the fonts. Bézier curves and cubic Bézier curves are described in further detail along with vector graphics rasterization. One part of this text describes very important de Casteljau algorithm. The last chapter focuses on implementation in Matlab programming language, the creation of curves, that means single font characters, and the ways of how the algorithm works with transformations. Some sample images showing transformations using different input arguments are displayed in this section as well. There is evaluation of the contribution of this application and the possibilities of further expansion at the end.
