This thesis investigates the politics of memory in the Austrian province of Carinthia between 1945 and 2002.  The thesis seeks to determine the extent to which a common collective memory was articulated in the political sphere in Carinthia and attempts to identify whether and in what ways this collective memory was distinctively Carinthian as opposed to generically Austrian. Drawing on sources including party newspapers, parliamentary speeches and speeches given at war veterans’ meetings, a series of chapters detail each of the three main Carinthian parties’ discourses on the Nazi era, the 1920 <i>Volksabstimmung</i> and the Austrian Civil War, and consider the extent to which the parties’ discourses differ from one another.  Each chapter looks at the ways in which memory can be thought of as having been instrumentalised by Carinthia’s political parties, focuses on the impact of generational change on memory in Carinthia, analyses the interaction between the parties’ discourses and considers the prominent role the province’s history of border conflict played in each party’s narrative of the past.

BOHEMIA, CARINTHIA AND TYROL UNDER THE RULE OF HENRY OF CARINTHIA (JAKUB RAZIM) ABSTRACT The aim of this dissertation is to describe the governing practice (Herrschaftspraxis) of Henry of Carinthia in Bohemia, Carinthia and, subsequently, especially in the Tyrol, in whose southern parts the power base of the Menhart dynasty was situated. The work focuses on four key features of Henry's rule - constructing consensus between ruler and elites, exploiting feudal rights, the use of mortgages, and the use of culture to project political themes. The analysis of the various power techniques used is divided into individual chapters drawing on sources previously unpublished or insufficiently explored. The first group consists of Tyrolean chancery registers (Tiroler Kanzleiregister) and accounts books (Tiroler Rechnungsbücher, alternatively Raitbücher), the second of Austrian court poetry. Following the initial introduction of the sources, bibliography and methodology used for dealing with this particular topic, the consensual context is introduced, within which the rule of Henry of Carinthia was conducted, ranging from informal consultations to deliberations of the royal council. This diploma thesis will study life and action Smil of Lichtenburk's sons under the reign the last Przemislid kings Wenceslas II. and Wenceslas III., but especially in the context Henry of Carinthia's reign. The first part is devoted to coming the lords of Lichtenburg to the area of the Bohemian-Moravian highlands, which is connected primarily with Smil of Lichtenburg. In the following chapters it maps activities Smil of Lichtenburg's sons in the economic and political sphere of observed period. Study period was indikative defined years 1280 - 1310 with knowledge of overlaps to the period previous and next after the defined years. With regard to death Smil of Lichtenburg's youngest sons, which died in 1313, more precisely in 1329, touch this diploma thesis also John Luxembourgish's reign. There is observating destiny of mentioned descendant. Aim of this diploma thesis is try to bring a new view on the real persons of lords of Lichtenburg and primaly to their signifikance for Henry of Carinthia's reign. To the achievement this aim was using heuristic methody of gathering sources, which relate to this issues, and also relevant historical literature. Based on the study of sources and historical literature we can say, that all sons of Smil of Lichtenburg more or less affected to the Henry of Carinthia's reign....

Concentration camp scholarship has been impacted by an ‘island syndrome’: most research limits itself to one site, focuses either on its life or afterlife, and overlooks interactions among functionaries, inmates, and local people. Central themes connected to the camps thus remain shrouded in popular misconceptions. This study breaks with historiographical orthodoxies and addresses common confusions through a new framework. Drawing on Ebensee and the Loiblpass, two forced labour outposts of the Mauthausen complex, it presents the first integrated account of the divergent factors that shaped the legacies of these sites and the fates of their subjects. A focus on Ebensee shows how gravely the local bureaucracy, relief workers, and US Army impacted on the early postwar lives of former camp inmates. Victim groups were marginalised by local and Allied actors precisely because of a broad awareness and continued survivor presence. The Loiblpass figured less prominently in the postwar lives of its surrounding communities. At the core of postwar views lay pre-1945 experiences. Living in an epicentre of territorial struggles, Loibl Valley inhabitants did not externalise a strong political agenda and instead communicated a binary ‘selective association process’. The memory of the camp prompted a positive association in socioeconomic terms; political allusions provoked a relativizing of brutality and a claim to personal victimhood. The local context and postwar dimension constitute a missing link in our understanding of these sites, their neighbouring communities, and the early postwar period more broadly. While the causal relationship between a social reintegration of Nazis and a re-marginalisation of genuine victims has thus far been viewed chiefly through the lens of federal politics, this development was already long under way—aided by all local actors—when amnesty laws encouraging the rehabilitation of former National Socialists came into effect; national and Allied policy decisions in the wake of the burgeoning Cold War only further catalysed this development from 1947 onwards.

The article examines (dis)continuities with regard to organisational frameworks, individual careers, ideological foundations as well as practices of nationalist activism in contact zones. On the example of today’s Austrian-Slovenian borderland, the contribution focuses on specific German Nationalist (and later National Socialist) aspirations to homogenize the diverse population of targeted territories in favour of ‘Germanness’. It takes into account the preconditions and histories of German nationalist ‘Grenzland’ consciousness in the Austrian provinces of Carinthia and Styria as well as their neighbouring Slovene territories (Upper Carniola and Lower Styria) and traces the development of what is termed ‘Grenzland’-activism across the ruptures of 1918, 1938/39/41 and 1945 up until the 1970s. With this spatial and temporal focus, the article not only shows the intertwinements of as well as changing emphasis on historical, biological and cultural justifications of this nationalist activism in the context of shifting state borders. By working out and relating the specifics of each phase, the paper at hand also uncovers the striking continuities of ideological, individual and practical aspects of German nationalist activism from its beginnings to the extremist peak during the Nazi period up until the mid-/late 20th century.

Qualifying work has interdisciplinary charakter. This work is concentrate on knowledge of history and culture of age last members of Přemysl´s dynasty and the first members of Luxembourg´s dynasty. The primary aim of work is to identify the conditions under which there is courtly literature and minnesing on the courts of these rulers. Next aim is using the comparative method to define the basic topics in prose and poetry. The secondary aim is recognizing influence of German and Latin literature domestic and foreign on literature written in Czech. The work ?Minnesing and court literature at the court of last members of Přemysl's dynasty and the first members of Luxembourg's dynasty? deals with years 1283?1306 and 1310?1333 taking into account also past years.

The subject of the Masters thesis The Czech Kingdom in The Chronicle of Otakar of Styria is the history of Czech Kingdom in the Otokar of Styrias versified cronicle. The goal of this work is a comprehensive view of that cronicle as a historic source of cetral European history during the second half of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. The Masters thesis includes an evaluation the relationships between the central European sources of that time. It investigates both, the knetty question of the autor's live story and his motivation for writing a work around 100 000 verses. In particular chapters, various social groups, which the author focuses on, are examined (royal houses, aristocracy, burgher class, people). No particular social group can be considered in isolation. Thier interrelations are highlighted in the thesis. Following section introduces Otakar's description of certain central European regions (Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Hungary, Polen and the Holy Roman Empire), which is the foundation of my attempt to discover the cronicler's source and information base. Used method is based on the analysis of cronicle sources and the study of historical materials. The history of the Kingdom of Bohemia results from the above mentioned circumstances.
