A Content Analysis of Art and Art-Related Vocabulary on Selected Children's Educational Television Programs

The problem of this study was a content analysis of art and art-related vocabulary utilized in selected children's leisure time television viewing. Three programs (Misterogers Neighborhood, Sesame Street, and The Electric Company) were selected for the analysis. Audio tapes were made, transcribed, and analyzed for the art and artrelated words based on contextual usage. The analysis of the resulting 223-page tapescript revealed 467 art and art-related words which occurred a total of 3,668 times. The identified art and art-related words were subsequently sorted into five categories by systematically applying specific criteria. The conclusion was that television is limiting in art and art-related vocabulary as a viable language source.

This study explores how the only public TV channel designated for children in the Czech Republic approaches on a children's audience and how it communicates with a child and adult viewers. The primary research of this study has a qualitative nature. The case study was used, the data were analyzed thematically. In the study, several interviews were conducted with the key television staff responsible for communication. Research based on a literature review found that television workes view the viewer as an active audience. They create content which is to be edutainment. ČT :D follows world trends and uses the latest technologies, including social networks, to communicate with the child's viewer. However, social networks ČT :D does not consider to be the key means of communicating with child viewers due to the age of its target group. Within the paradigms that dominate the discourse of approaching to the child's viewer, social constructivism was found out.

Language choice in children’s animated TV shows

This study aims to analyze three popular U.S. children’s TV shows – Dora the Explorer (Nickelodeon), Maya & Miguel (PBS) and Handy Manny (Disney Channel) – in terms of their incorporation of Spanish. Qualitative and quantitative measures were used to assess the frequency and types of code switching both in the context of bilingualism and language pedagogy. The study revealed different strategies of language choice and socio-cultural objectives for each show. A close analysis of language choice in the three children’s TV programs revealed distinct approaches to TV writing in the name of raising awareness of ethnic diversity, developing cultural literacy, and brand marketing. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
