This study analyzes the appearance of eighty visual religious symbols in the Improvement Era, Ensign, and New Era, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1952-1972. The study notes their frequency and distribution as well as noting their size, the medium used to render them and the correlation of their religious meanings to the articles they illustrate.The findings of this study indicate that visual religious symbols are used and that many of them have a high degree of correlation to the articles they illustrate.This study gives suggestions to those artists who wish to produce works of art for the above named publications and gives some reflection of editorial policies concerning the use of religious symbols in the publications.

The icon represents a great part of the heritage of Christian arts in Egypt. In this thesis the early stages of iconic art are studied to find out the influential factors leading to the formation of the icon as it is now. The Coptic icon in particular is studied, both the icon itself and how it differs from the Byzantine icon. The religious factor is focussed on as an effective and modelling element in defining the icon, and the symbols are studied in order to go back to their historical roots. This study also aims at tracing the phenomenon of iconic art, by studying its characteristics and the works themselves and by clarifiying the iconic symbols as part of the cultural and creative activity. "Christian piano art music" is a small genre, each piece of which belongs seemingly to either Christian music or art music, but by definition to both of them. In spite of its merits this genre has been ignored both by the concert hall because of its religiosity and by the church because of its artistry. However, since God is the One who has infinite creativity and is pleased with our various musical praises, both congregational praise and artistic musical praise has to be dedicated to Him. In chapters 2-5, after the history of music--Christian music, art music, and Christian art music--is examined from a biblical perspective of human history (Creation-the Fall-Redemption-Consummation), the significance of Christian art music is discussed, especially in light of God's common grace and special grace. After discussing the merits of instrumental praise, in chapters 6-9, the selected repertoire of Christian piano art music is introduced, being categorized into four groups--works using hymn or chorale tunes, works related to the Bible, works expressing Christian faith symbolically, and abstract piano works dedicated to God. Finally, the calling as "Christian culture makers" is discussed.

A review of the history of video game design reveals an emphasis on themes of competition, survival, and combat. Game designers are now increasingly exploring other themes, including ethics, morality, and religious or spiritual subjects. This thesis analyzes the design of a 2D single-player computer game based on Christian principles, investigating morality, ethics, and meaning in video games. The game builds on previous games, examining the ethical relevance of certain video games as cultural artifacts and as personal inspiration, expounding on how games can be both inspirational and educational. Though violent games can provide moral challenges and "ethically significant experiences," in this project, non-violent solutions are more conducive for a game based on Christian tenets. This thesis project reinterprets the idea of the "shmup" or scrolling shooter game by changing the game mechanics and win condition to express a non-violent process. The player takes on the role of an angel who has been sent to rescue birds from demons, presenting general subjects for wide audience appeal regardless of religious beliefs. The thesis outlines the process used in the design, the philosophical approach, and the technical and artistic methods used to create the game. The game is evaluated subjectively with respect to the goals set forth in the design, based on informal player feedback. This thesis contributes to the exploration of games in a spiritual, artistic, moral, and emotional context and the process outlined herein provides a practical example to other independent game developers in the design of a game based on spiritual themes.
