The early years of St. Columba's. Parkview is situated to the north of Johannesburg, below the Westcliff Ridge, about four miles from the city centre ... by 1920 it was the centre of the rapidly developing northern areas of Johannesburg. One man who was aware of its growth was the minister of Clifton Presbyterian Church, Rev. James Gray. A man of vision and determination, he had been responsible for establishing the first Presbyterian Church in the Transvaal, at Barberton, and now his enthusiasm for Church extension work was directed towards Parkview. In August, 1920, two months after his induction to the charge at Clifton, he reported to his Session that: "The growing suburb of Parkview had no Church to see to the spiritual needs of the people there and in the districts around". He drew to their attention the fact that the Transvaal Consolidated Lands Investment Co. were offering building sites in the area, with loans, so that if the residents of the area were in favour, and were prepared to help obtain the necessary funds, then the time was ripe for establishing a new Church. Michaela Ráčková in her diploma thesis will be deal with a phenomenon of revitalization of church buildings, especially design of reconversion of the former vicarage and its surroundings in the village Přítluky in South Moravia. Church buildings as churches, vicarages, convents have always been determining and dominant element in the formation of settlements. Their clear and often privileged position in the structure of settlements was determined by relationship of man to faith. This position remained them despite many ups and downs and church buildings still play an important role in the environment in which we live.

In the years 1920-80 the Mormon Church developed, expanded and refined an architectural program based on the concept of the standard plan. Standard plan buildings were selected, individualized and built for local ward units under the direction of the Church Building Department which created uniform standards of quality and appearance across the worldwide Church and created a tangible link between foreign members and the central Church.Although functional and financial considerations directed virtually all design decisions and formed the operative basis of the program other elements also determined the nature of the Mormon approach to building. Growth, in the membership, more than any other single factor, affected the nature of building in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The mid-century emphasis on the accelerated missionary program, internationalization of the Church, and the emphasis on global uniformity of Church programs led to the use of the standard plan as the exclusive method of new construction in 1980.
