The role of the Christian church in South African society : with scriptural focus on the care of widows and orphans

Campbell, Geoffrey January 2004 (has links)
Submitted to the Faculty of Theology and Religion Studies in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Theology in the Department of Practical Theology at the University of Zululand, 2004. / A literary critique is offered on the publication "Theology in a New Key: Responding to Liberation Themes", by Robert M. Brown. His view of Christian ministry differs fundamentally from the documented ministry of the early Church, described by Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. A comparative analysis is presented in this dissertation. A brief review is made of the Christian Church in South Africa, with reference to early Christian missionaries who helped establish the Christian faith in this country. The devastation caused to the Church and the nation by fifty years of Apartheid is discussed. Attitudes towards the role of the Christian Church in society differ according to religious or philosophical belief. A brief examination of Atheism, Agnosticism, Deism, and Theism is undertaken, and conclusions drawn concerning their attitudes towards the Christian Church. Situational Ethics is the practical outworking of many religious and philosophical views in the 21st century, and is here exposed as unbiblical. It is also illogical, in that it expects the Christian Church to provide 'social convenience', while offering no personal commitment Socio-medical aspects of South Africa's monstrous HIV/AIDS epidemic are presented, and a case study done of an orphanage in KwaZulu-Natal, to establish the precise nature, financial viability, and balance of spiritual ministry within this Christian Care Centre. Recommendations for effective and biblical Christian ministry in the 'new' South Africa are presented.

Spiritual resources for the practical care and counseling of the alcoholic an approach implementing spiritual interventions

Axtell, Lee A. 01 1900 (has links)
CIVINS / One of the central spiritual issues alcoholics deal with today is a sense of meaninglessness. This thesis will show how the use of three spiritual resources can bring about wholeness in the lives of alcoholics: First is the resource of healing of memories with a primary focus on forgiveness, second is the resource of prayer and meditation, and third is pastoral counseling utilizing narrative theory. These three resources can be transformative interventions for the pastoral care of alcoholics. Through these spiritual resources the alcoholic can rediscover a deeper sense of meaning. When a person has meaning in their life, this means they are connected with three relationships. These three relationships are: 1) the relationship with God; 2) the relationship with society and community; and 3) the relationship with herself or himself. When the spiritual resources in this thesis are implemented into pastoral counseling, these relationships can be reconnected. This then results in a rediscovery of personal meaning. By the time alcoholics determine that their lives are unmanageable they have perhaps ruined their lives and health, and quite possibly the lives of the persons dearest to them. Someone must intervene if lives are to be saved and if people are to become self- respecting, productive citizens again.

The relationship between a church's discipleship practices and the development of maturing disciples

Erskine, Eric Richard 14 May 2004 (has links)
This dissertation examines the relationship between discipleship practices a church employs and the spiritual maturation of disciples. The first chapter explores the research concern and poses seven research questions that explore the relationship between specific discipleship practices and the spiritual maturity of disciples. The six discipleship practices explored in this study were Sunday school, discipleship courses, small group ministry, preaching, mission involvement, and ministry opportunities. The biblical foundation for discipleship and discipleship practices utilized by churches is explored. A biblical definition of a disciple is developed, providing a word study of the terms "disciple," "follower," and "imitator." An exposition of key discipleship passages in the Gospels as well as in the Epistles provides the biblical foundation for interpreting Jesus' command to "make disciples." An evaluation of the theological and educational assumptions provides a contemporary look at the issues that relate to the process of making disciples. The chapter concludes with an examination of the discipleship practices that help churches fulfill the Great Commission. This descriptive study employed a proportional stratified sampling technique of randomly selected churches in the Florida Baptist Association in North Florida. Pastors of the randomly selected churches were surveyed to determine the discipleship practices their churches employed. Worship attendees of the same churches were surveyed using the Discipleship Inventory and an addendum to the inventory that obtained data pertinent to the self-perceived influence of discipleship practices on their spiritual growth. Analysis of the relationship between maturity scores of respondents and the self-perceived influence of a discipleship practice focused on exploring the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and z-score to see what relationships existed. Analysis of the influence discipleship practices had on individual respondents explored the most influential discipleship practices for each spiritual maturity level. Analysis also focused on an exploration of the major differences between the three churches that had a higher percentage of maturing believers and the three churches that had a lower percentage of maturing believers. Included in this chapter is an evaluation of the research design. A concluding summary probes the implications and applications this study has upon discipleship practices churches employ and the influence these practices have upon the lives of disciples. Suggestions for further research are made at the conclusion of this chapter. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
