Those undertaking the study of a musical instrument may focus on a specific genre of music or diversify through exploration of a range of styles and forms. Students wishing to gain insight into a variety of styles may seek guidance from a number of sources, particularly in their formative years. In the interests of achieving stylistic authenticity and in the absence of teachers with wide-ranging musical experience, the student may seek direction from repertoire and pedagogical resources. This research aims to address a deficiency in existing repertoire and teaching materials for the beginner to intermediate classical clarinet player by contributing to and extending current resources. The thesis is presented in two parts - folio (60%) and exegesis (40%): The folio involves the creation of a series of original works written in a range of archetypal jazz, popular and classical music styles, aimed at providing a level of instructional support for both student and teacher in the achievement of stylistic integrity. This is realised through the inclusion of annotations and recommended practice strategies for each piece, as well as a general guide to style section. To be of further educational value to the student, compositions in the folio incorporate both traditional and extended techniques. The exegesis reviews current leading instructional manuals and repertoire, discusses their strengths and weaknesses and identifies areas where resources are deficient. It analyses and presents an overview of compositions in the folio and provides a detailed commentary of the compositional process, using a selected work as an exemplar. Given the nature of the folio, which is aimed at the young clarinet player and teacher and commences with advice on style followed by a series of compositions, the exegesis precedes the folio in this thesis.

abstract: This final research paper provides both a performer's perspective and a recording of double clarinet literature by William O. Smith (b. 1926), Eric Mandat (b. 1957), and Jody Rockmaker (b. 1961). The document includes musical examples, references to the recording, and interviews with the composers. The first chapter contains a brief literature review of sources on world double clarinets, biographies of the above-mentioned composers, and other pertinent information. Chapters 2-4 include the performer's perspective on the following works: Epitaphs for Double Clarinet by William O. Smith, Double Life for Solo Clarinet by Eric Mandat, and two compositions by Jody Rockmaker, Half and Half for demi-clarinet in A, and Double Dip. The purpose of this study is to trace the development of a comparatively young orchestral instrument, the bass clarinet, and its use in the symphony orchestra. The first chapter concerns the development of the bass clarinet from the earliest imperfect specimen to the modern day instrument. The second chapter discusses physical characteristics that are peculiar to the bass clarinet. The third chapter deals with the particular methods of using the bass clarinet in orchestral literature by various composers, from its introduction into the orchestra by Meyerbeer through the present.

The purpose of this study was to identify the specific advanced clarinet techniques in which further knowledge is required and to provide a resource for band directors to aid in the instruction of these techniques. In order to determine results, a survey was administered to high school band directors who are members of the Florida Bandmasters Association (N = 131). Sixteen band compositions were selected based on survey responses for analysis of technical challenges ranging from grade levels 4-6 on the Florida Bandmasters Association Concert Music List. The results of the band composition analysis and the survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and topics to be included in the guide were chosen based on these results. The first part of this essay details the need for the study, a review of literature, the method of the study, the results of the study and a summary/conclusions section which includes implications for further research. The second part of this essay is the resource guide for band directors. The topics that were selected to be included in the guide are: Embouchure, Tone, Intonation and Tuning, Hand Position and Finger Technique, The Break, Altissimo, Articulation, Auxiliary Clarinets and Reeds, Equipment and Care. An appendix is also included which provides further resources for solo repertoire, method and etude books and a discography.
