The dissertation presents the history and makes an evaluation of the Brazilian and international combat vehicles industry, disclosing the trajectory of the largest Brazilian company of the sector, Engesa. At first, we made a general characterization of the defense sector, more specifically of the combat vehicles industry, with the objective of understanding the modus operandi of this important sector of the defense industry. Later, we analyze the most recent history of this industry and its peculiarities. In the ensuing chapter, it was presented, in a synthetic way, the history of the beginning of the Brazilian defense industry, always relating the events with the Brazilian industrialization process, mainly after the II World War until the end of the military period (1964-1985). The results of this dissertation lead to the following conclusions: (a) the worldwide success of Engesa was due to its privileged perception to occupy a new market niche as well as to the special relations existing between the corporation president and the high command of the Brazilian Army; (b) the corporation was helped, mostly in its beginning as a producer of armaments, by the qualified labor force formed by the Brazilian Military Institutes; (c) a combination of negative factors, internal and external,, brought the company to bankruptcy in the beginning of the decade of 1990; and (d) it was identified a huge business potential in the sector that could have been occupied by the corporation, if it still existed or by a successor or competitor.

Extending TACSI with Support for Group BehaviorNordfelth, Magnus, Skogman, Fredrik January 2006 (has links)
This thesis investigates the possibilities to extend a tactical air combat simulator, named TACSI, with support for team behavior in fight and attack scenarios. A model for describing teamwork has been developed. The model uses plans and primitive team actions to achieve goals. A social structure is used to transfer the responsibility for making decisions from the team to a single agent within the team. Special care have been taken to allow an effctive distribution of targets within the team. In order to test the concepts of the model and to evaluate the applicability in TACSI, a limited implementation of the team behavior model have been made. The results show that the concepts of the model works and that the model is applicable in TACSI, but some things is left to be specified in order to make a complete implementation.

Development of prototype UCAV airframe components using advanced composite materialsJordan, Kenneth Gary January 2004 (has links)
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the academic requirements for the Degree of Master of Technology: Mechanical Engineering, Durban Institute of Technology, 2004. / The study presented here addresses the design of the composite wing and canard structures for an -un-inh-ab-it-ed-combat air vehicle. The desian philosophy is based on a ~- combination of finite element analysis and mathematical programming. The wings and canards were manufactured using advanced composite materials. the manufacturing methodology was based on a rapid protoryping approach using 3D computer models and eNe machining. The theory of composite materials is covered in detail, attention IS given to the properties of the separate constituents, composite material properties and manufacturing methods that are relevant to the project. The finite element method and sequential linear programming are discussed in the context of structural analysis and optimisation. An overview of the methodology and how it is implemented is presented. Numerical optimisation techniques are discussed with particular emphasis being placed on sequential linear programming. The optimisation problem formulation is presented in detail with attention paid to elements and their formulation as well as design variables, constraints and sensitivity analysis. Two design concepts were considered for the wing and canard structures, the first being a conventional configuration and the second being a novel radial design. The development and evaluation of these structural concepts are presented in detail. The optimisation study done on the canard is also presented as well as the manufacture thereof. Details regarding the manufacturing methodology used in the construction of the canard for the uninhabited combat air vehicle are presented in detail with particular / M

Factors Associated With Head Trauma Among Professional Mixed Martial Arts Athletes.Scalia, Peter January 2015 (has links)
Background: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is an enigma that has become synonymous with combat sports over the past few decades. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport that is growing in popularity world-wide. The objective of this study is to determine the factors associated with head trauma among MMA athletes. Methods: Logistic regression analyses using SPSS 20 was employed to model putative covariates against the dichotomous outcomes of unconsciousness (for the full dataset) and diagnosed concussion (for the enriched subset of fighters who were rendered unconscious). Results: Increasing age, black or African-American ethnicity, shorter rest periods between fights, increasing numbers of significant clinch strikes landed, significant distance body strikes landed and power strikes landed to the body at distance are all factors associated with being diagnosed with a concussion among the fighters rendered unconscious. Conclusion: If bolstered by confirming laboratory and clinical evidence, policies should be developed for implementation by MMA governing bodies to help reduce incidences of head trauma and concussion, built around fighters’ demographic and behavioural characteristics. In particular, enforcing a mandatory rest period between fights and placing an upper limit on fighters’ age are ideas worth exploring.

The Meaning of the Transition to Retirement at Midlife from Active Duty Military Service in the United States:Flaherty, Erin Marie January 2019 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Jane . Flanagan / Purpose: The purpose of this hermeneutic, dialectic, phenomenological qualitative study was to describe among a sample of recently retired (within the past five years) United States military veterans, the experience of the transition to retirement at midlife from active duty (AD.) The secondary aim is to describe within this sample of recently retired military veteran’s, the meaning of health to their post military lifestyle. Background: The transition to retirement from AD military service to retirement is a unique transition occurring at midlife about which little is known. Veterans serving after 9/11/2001 are more likely to have deployed and to have deployed multiple times compared to other service eras, having unique effects on relationships, physical and mental health, and meaning of health. No research has been done to examine the experience and meaning of health of career AD veterans who served during eighteen years of continuous war. Method: This study was guided by Margaret Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness (HEC) to explore the meaning of the transition to retirement and health among AD military veterans at midlife. Newman’s HEC guided data collection and analysis. Fourteen participants were recruited through purposive, criterion snowball sampling. Participants were individually interviewed about meaningful people and events in the military retirement and meaning of health. Rigor and trustworthiness were ensured by taking measures to support credibility, confirmability, dependability, and transferability. The researcher developed a narrative and diagram of meaningful events and relationships which was shared with each participant and reflected together on life patterning. Results: Fourteen participants consisting of men (n=10) and women (n=4) representing all branches of the military as well as officer and enlisted ranks participated in this study. The difficulty of finding a sense of purpose in retirement was common among participants. Participants also described becoming aware of health conditions after distrust of the healthcare system during their military careers. The experience of war was found to have effects on the entire family. Conclusion: Through HEC, a more complete understanding of the meaning of health and transition to retirement among active duty veterans was formed. Future research should focus on the unique populations of veterans including of combat veteran and women veterans. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. La correspondance entre Voltaire et D’Alembert : une amitié épistolaire / The correspondence between Voltaire and D’Alembert : an epistolary friendshipCasares, Nathalie 16 January 2014 (has links)
In the eighteenth century, friendship possesses a vaster defining spectrum and this is extended when we study this feeling in Voltaire’s and D’Alembert letters. Their long lasting relationship of more than thirty years remains indestructible despite the difference of generation between them. They knew how to overtake the disparities that separated them, the disputes, and the multiple manners with somewhat and nevertheless, happiness. But it is precisely through the relational pitfalls and obstacles that the friendship had been tested, its value is revealed, its particular brilliance too. Our approach consisted in returning as much as possible to the relational levers and –through the suspension of the link- the friendship attachment. These suspensions have several characteristics and consequently if censorship holds a big part, the diverse literary quarrels and the philosophical dissensions as well as politically-religious take over our correspondence. Their guiles to supplant the common enemies were able to distract them from their tensions and conquer their public. A rivalry of influence developed their relationship one to another and their mutual feelings. Finally, it is the polemical object symbolized by the letter and the book in a broad sense, the circumstances or the role of companies that moved their friendship feelings.

All those who fight: the motif of single combat in Romanesque art, c. 1050-1215Pugliano, Elizabeth 13 February 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines images of single combat in Romanesque art. Between the mid-eleventh century and the first decades of the thirteenth century, representations of head-to-head battle between two human opponents were abundant, especially in architectural sculpture. The appearance of these combats is concentrated in northern Spain and southwestern France, although this imagery is found throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. Only a small number of these images are identified by labels or accompanied by an explanatory text. However, those few examples show that the motif of single combat served different purposes and conveyed a variety of meanings, ranging from representations of historical figures to encounters drawn from epic literature to allegorical renderings of spiritual battle.
Despite the prevalence of this iconography, this dissertation is the first study to address the entire corpus of Romanesque single combats. Beginning with the few examples to include a contemporary text, it addresses the variety of identities and meanings attached to the single combat motif in eleventh- and twelfth-century works. Analysis of those examples sheds light on the interpretive problems that arise for the larger body of unlabeled images comprising the corpus, whose significance is assessed by considering both formal attributes, and the spatial, functional and visual contexts in which the motif appears. Finally, the dissertation brings new focus to the motif’s temporal and geographic characteristics by addressing the high concentration of combat images in parts of Spain and France. Examination of the discourses concerning the early crusades and the Iberian ‘reconquest’ suggests that these images acted not just as representations of those locally prevalent events, but as visual components aimed at promoting the Iberian cause and aligning peninsular warfare with endeavors in the Holy Land.
This dissertation shows that the single combat motif coincides with and reflects a crucial shift in the ways violence and conflict were conceived and addressed in Christian society. Considered within the context of the contradictory discourses on fighting circulating at this time, this multivalent motif is shown to reflect the many meanings battle held for medieval viewers. / 2018-01-01T00:00:00Z

The impact of combat deployment experiences on intimate partner violence in the Air ForceHyer, Steven Matthew 07 August 2017 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Intimate partner violence is a problem in the United States (U.S.) military.
Previous research has identified factors that increase a couple’s risk for engaging in
violence. Most of these factors, such as age, alcohol, and relationship satisfaction are
consistent across civilian and military samples. One factor that is unique to military
samples is deployment; service members can be exposed to unique traumatic incidents
while deployed which are generally unknown to most civilians. Deployments can also
increase a service member’s risk for developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),
which can increase their risk for intimate partner violence. Previous research on the effect
of deployments on intimate partner violence has produced mixed results. The purpose of
this study was to analyze if deployment, total length of deployment, combat experiences
from deployment, and PTSD symptoms increased risk for Air Force airmen to perpetrate
intimate partner violence at a moderate or severe level of violence. Survey data from a
representative sample of active duty Air Force airmen (N = 1,501) was used to conduct
Chi-Square analyses and multinomial logistic regression models for perpetrated violence.
Results of the study showed that deployment and combat experiences were not significant
predictors of perpetrated violence. PTSD symptoms, in addition to alcohol misuse and
relationship satisfaction, were significant predictors of moderate and severe perpetrated
violence. In terms of practice and policy implications, the study results underscore the
importance of widespread screening for these risk factors as well as the availability of
interventions focused on alcohol use and relationship issues among service members. Future research could determine if PTSD symptoms moderate the relationship between
combat experiences and intimate partner violence.
