Adoption of project appraisal practice and accessibility of finance : an empirical analysis on selected small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in Malaysia

Ibrahim, Mohamed Dahlan January 1998 (has links)
The crucial role played by small and medium-sized industries (SMIs) in developing countries is very well acknowledged. In Malaysia, for example, the SMIs are perceived as the backbone of the nation's industrialisation process. However, the promotion and development of these SMIs are often hampered by their lack of access to formal institutional credits. The lack of access to formal credits is often ascribed to the higher level of perceived risks, moral hazards and transactions costs. At present, banks and SMIs in developing countries do not have the appropriate technology to adequately assess these risks. The present study seeks to suggest that project appraisal practice can and should be adopted by the SMIs in order to assess their project's risks. Banks are recommended to use similar techniques to objectively evaluate their lending risks. Built upon the theoretical framework of finance and development, the study empirically evaluates the relationship between the adoption of project appraisal practice by the SMIs and their access to formal sector finance. In addition, the study also attempts to identify the factors that can influence the company's decision whether or not to adopt formal project appraisal practice. A very significant and positive relationship was found between the adoption of project appraisal practice and the SMIs' access to formal sector finance. The following factors were found to be significant in determining whether or not a firm adopts project appraisal practice: (1) access to banks finance, (2) entrepreneur's level of education, (3) training on project appraisal, (4) market classification, and, (5) level of business experience. The study therefore concludes that the adoption of project appraisal practice by SMIs should be encouraged through formal training. Finally, the study suggests that the present system of providing finance to SMIs should be reformed and a more innovative and efficient system is recommended.

The adoption of open source software by Singaporean companies

Koh, Ker Yuan (Edmund) January 2009 (has links)
Based on collaboration rather than competition, Open Source Software provides a new dynamic in the development and use of software systems. As such it has the potential to make a significant legal, social and economic impact on the industry. While its origins trace back to the start of the software industry, the recent success of the Linux operation system, Apache web server or the Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser provide impetus to the growth of interest in this movement. However, while a number of studies have been conducted on its development, few have provided empirical evidence of its adoption within the South East Asian context. This study aims to investigate factors leading to the adoption of Open Source Software in Singaporean Organisations. The research has found that the adoption of Open Source Software is driven by the perception of a cost advantage. The organisations interviewed have acknowledged cost as being one of their biggest concerns and top priorities. While costs were stated to be of major concern to the organisations, objective measures of cost such as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return on Investment (ROI) were rarely used by the organisations studied. This perception of cost saving is found to be led by industry sources such as publications, conferences and websites. The next significant finding is the need for increased open source software skills in the industry. One of the major drivers of Open Source Software Adoption in the organisations is that they posses pre-existing skills in Open Source Software use. This enables them to better mitigate risk and to lower their training costs. The final principal finding is that Open Source Software appears to be used mainly in systems infrastructure applications. Organisations reported a large degree of satisfaction including increased stability, scalability and cost effectiveness. Issues remain with Open Source Software’s manageability, its quality of support and ease of use.

Investigating the relationships between distinctive capabilities, business strategy and performance of Malaysian exporting SMEs /

Ahmad, Sa'ari bin Unknown Date (has links)
Despite the importance of SMEs and increased knowledge in the area of strategic management, empirical research on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in this area of management has not only been limited but also neglected. In an attempt to investigate the strategic factors that can influence the performance of SMEs, this study focuses on Malaysian exporting SMEs. This study adopts the conceptual framework in the context of strategic management. The conceptual framework is developed based on the strategic management variables; business strategy, distinctive capabilities and performance. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the business strategy, distinctive capabilities and performance of Malyasian exporting SMEs. The study was based on a sample survey consisting of 150 Malaysian exporting SMEs, which is based on the listing provided by MATRADE. Using structured questionnaires, the data were collected through mailed questionnaires to the managers and owners of exporting SMEs throughout Malaysia. There were statistically significant differences in the performance of Malaysian exporting SMEs that adopted different business strategies, and there is a relationship between distinctive capabilities and performance of Malaysian exporting SMEs. / In general, all of the strategic variables used in this study significantly influence the performance of the exporting SMEs in Malaysia. Although there are different impacts of strategic factors on the various performance measures, in general the strategic factors used in this study seem to significantly influence the business performance of the Malaysian exporting SMEs studied. / Thesis (DoctorateofBusinessAdministration)--University of South Australia, 2005.

Service quality in the insurance industry /

Sayasonti, Sasirin. Unknown Date (has links)
Service quality has been increasingly identified as a key factor in differentiating service products and in building competitive advantage. However, the differences of opinion between customers and service providers in the same industry have not received much attention in the literature. Therefore, to gain further insight into the development of service delivery in the insurance industry, differences between customers and service providers' perspectives need to be explored. / The study design used in this research was twofold. First, quantitative research was conducted in which customers and providers were participants. The conceptual model involved a comparison between customers and service providers' perceptions of the attributes of service delivery in the auto insurance industry. Moreover, a conceptual model of the determinants of different perceptions regarding six attributes; customer expectation, customer experience, customer perceived service quality, perception of corporate image, customer satisfaction and customer repurchase intention- are proposed and discussed. Both customers and service providers in the auto insurance industry were asked questions based on the same components of service delivery and related attributes. The first phase of the research, a quantitative based mail administered survey, was undertaken; four hundred and six questionnaires were sent to customers and one hundred sent to service providers in the auto insurance industry in Thailand. The results show that there are significant differences between customer and service provider perceptions concerning customer experience, customer perceived service quality, perception of corporate image, customer satisfaction and customer repurchase intention. / The second phase of the research involved a qualitative study using nine managers in the auto insurance industry in Thailand. Due to the exploratory nature of this research, face-to-face interviews were used to investigate five important dimensions of service quality in management in the auto insurance industry in Thailand. Further interviews were sought to investigate the conceptualization and measurement of customer satisfaction, service quality, repurchase intention and its importance to the auto insurance industry. Then, qualitative research by face-to-face interviews was used to illuminate various issues previously identified, and analysed the different perceptions between samples and examined the means to narrow the differences. The research disclosed that the reliability dimension is the important factor in implementing service quality in the auto insurance industry in Thailand. Results from the qualitative study also suggested that auto insurance companies in Thailand should be developing marketing strategies more focused on the needs of customers and thereby improve customer satisfaction. The results are of significance to operators in that they clearly identify the managerial implications of providing quality service to enhance customer satisfaction and with it customers' repurchase intention in auto insurance in Thailand. / Thesis (DBA(DoctorateofBusinessAdministration))--University of South Australia, 2005.
