Hermes, a Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra

Kimmel, Tyler T 25 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis consists of a large composition for violoncello and orchestra, together with an analytical paper in which I discuss my compositional techniques and some of their historical antecedents. The composition draws on the genres of imaginary musical theater, the symphonic poem, and the concerto. It was also inspired by the story of Hermes, the messenger god from Greek mythology. While the myth partially informs the compositional structure, the work is ultimately meant to showcase the versatility of the cello, the coloristic range of the orchestra (in some cases emulating the orchestral styles of previous composers), the balance of cello and orchestra together, and the eclectic invocation of many compositional techniques separately and simultaneously. These techniques encompass set theory (the use of unordered pitch collections), polytonality, and serialism. It is composed in a post-romantic style.

Gethsemane to Calvary

Bryson, Olden James 01 1900 (has links)
"Gethsemane to Calvary" is a sacred cantata for mixed voices and keyboard accompaniment. It is divided into six sections which are called parts. With the exception of part one which is a potpourri overture, the parts are divided into a variety of choral forms.

Breakdown

Kappaz, Philip C., 1956- 12 1900 (has links)
Breakdown is a 17 minute, single movement work for orchestra in five sections. It is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 Bb clarinets, 2 bassoons, 3 Bb trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, tuba, percussion, piano, and strings. The percussion consists of a tam-tam, 5 break drums, 4 timbales, 2 gourds, chimes, marimba, vibraphone, snare drum, 2 field drums, bass drum and tympani. The inspiration for this work is the poetry of Bruce Weigl which deals with many facets of the Vietnam experience. One particular work from his collection Song of Napalm, the poem "Breakdown", provided the basis for the emotional and structural content of the music. There are two primary sources of pitch material in the music of Breakdown, both of which have links to the Vietnam War. The name of a soldier who was killed in Vietnam, Miles Cooper, was used to generate a basic pitch set and a series of variation sets that provide much of the harmonic and melodic material in Breakdown. There derived sets are supported by the use of phrases and motives from the hymn Jewels, which celebrates the love of God for his children, and providesan indirect link to the subject of the piece, the war in Vietnam.

22: A Series Of Original Programmatic Compositions

Hoffmann, Jason T. 17 May 2016 (has links)
22 is a series of six programmatic compositions. The extra-musical narrative deals with the fact that twenty-two veterans commit suicide each day, a low estimate by some accounts. The music is written not specifically for veterans but to bring attention to veterans. It is important for all Americans to know the plight of those who have served their country and now are marginalized by the same country they swore to defend with their lives. Many veterans’ lives have been horrifically changed by war and those battle scars are now internal. Music is the best way that I can explain the complex emotions and story of veterans to a non-veteran audience. This music is intended to inform society of veteran suicides, not make a moral judgment against veterans or civilian society but to bring to light the story as it is. The music is instrumental so the weight of words will not interfere with how the listener interprets the music. / Mary Pappert School of Music; / Music Technology / MM; / Thesis;

The Effect of AlN Film grown on Substrate Kinds and Chemical Compositions by non-Reactive Sputtering under Room Temperature Condition

Lu, Hsun-Yi 06 June 2002 (has links)
Abstract AlN thin films grown on Si¡BGlass¡BSiO2 and Si3N4 substrate by RF magnetron sputtering technique with AlN target has been studied.Room temperature growth was applied to this study.During thin film growing, sputtering work pressure, sputtering power, sputtering working distance and sputtering time are those key parameters to be adjusted in order to highly C-axis prefer orientation AlN thin films. The microstructures of the AlN films were examined by x-ray diffraction. TEM was adopted to observe grain growth of the AlN films. The results was compared with the results of reactive RF magnetron sputtering. The results of the X-ray patterns showed that the strong C-axis prefer orientation of the AlN films were obtained with AlN target. in a 17¢Q long sputtering working distance condition, chemical composition of substrate can help to growth of AlN films. The column structures of AlN films can be observed by TEM.

String Quartet

Conyers, Carolyn C. (Carolyn Camille) 01 1900 (has links)
This quartet shows the composer's development from a highly chromatic, freely melodic, un-serialized style in movement I, through a still free, but disjunct, somewhat more ordered style in movement II, to a style in movement III which makes much use of serial techniques. This last usage, however, no longer employs the twelve-tone method in a stiff and fettered manner.

How to copy a song with impunity : a legal perspective on copyright infringement cases for musical works

Rogowski, Adrian 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (LLM)--Stellenbosch Univeristy, 2015 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Music has, and continues to play, an important role in society. It is therefore natural that more music composers enter the scene to capitalize upon this role that music has in society. It is however becoming more common place for music composers to start copying each other, either directly or indirectly. Fortunately, copyright laws have been developed to further protect the rights enjoyed by copyright holders, such as music composers, and these laws essentially protect the composers from the unlawful reproduction of their original music. Copying is, to some degree, inevitable, therefore, the question asked by this paper is to what extent is someone entitled to ‘copy’ from another person without it amounting to copyright infringement. In determining if there is copyright infringement, two tests must be applied and satisfied, namely, the causal connection test, and the substantial similarity test. Causal connection is usually met by establishing whether the alleged infringer had access to the original work. The substantial similarity test is the focus of this paper. The courts rely on this test to determine if that part which was reproduced from the original work is of substance i.e. if it is a part of the work which attributes uniqueness and quality to the original song. Of course, this test is notoriously difficult to understand and apply, hence the need for this paper to address the question on when there is substantial similarity in two works. This paper is of benefit to academics, authors (musicians) and lawyers, as not only is the substantial similarity test discussed from a theoretical point of view, but the question of when something is substantially similar is answered from a pragmatic point of view. It is hoped that this paper is used as a guideline in understanding and applying the substantial similarity test in music copyright infringement cases. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING : Geen opsomming beskikbaar
