Knowledge based image sequence compression

In this thesis, most commonly encountered video compression techniques and international coding standards are studied. The study leads to the idea of a reconfigurable codec which can adapt itself to the specific requirements of diverse applications so as to achieve improved performance. Firstly, we propose a multiple layer affine motion compensated codec which acts as a basic building block of the reconfigurable multiple tool video codec. A detailed investigation of the properties of the proposed codec is carried out. The experimental results reveal that the gain in coding efficiency from improved motion prediction and segmentation is proportional to the spatial complexity of the sequence being encoded. Secondly, a framework for the reconfigurable multiple tool video codec is developed and its key parts are discussed in detail. Two important concepts virtual codec and virtual tool are introduced. A prototype of the proposed reconfigurable multiple tool video codec is implemented. The codec structure and the constituent tools of the codec included in the prototype are extensively tested and evaluated to prove the concept. The results confirm that different applications require different codec configurations to achieve optimum performance. Thirdly, a knowledge based tool selection system for the reconfigurable codec is proposed and developed. Human knowledge as well as sequence properties are taken into account in the tool selection procedure. It is shown that the proposed tool selection mechanism gives promising results. Finally, concluding remarks are offered and future research directions are suggested.

Integrating dictionaries in a column-oriented database.

In today's data-driven world, managing large volumes of data has become a common challenge. Data-driven businesses often face the task of effectively handling and analysing such extensive datasets when real-time analysis plays a crucial role to make informed decisions. Column-oriented databases have risen in popularity as a preferred storage and analytics solution. Elisa Polystar, for instance, uses ClickHouse, a column-oriented database to provide network and service assurance solutions in their Kalix product. One of the advantages of using column-oriented databases, including ClickHouse, is the availability of compression techniques. Dictionary is an in-memory key-value structure which can be stored completely or partially in RAM and can be used in queries. This thesis conducts a series of query-based experiments to evaluate the performance of Kalix when utilising dictionary. Results show that compared to the traditional left outer join, the dictionary version performed significantly better in five queries for both query duration and memory usage. At its best, the dictionary performs 26 times faster and consumes 1526 times less memory.

Estimation of LRD present in H.264 video traces using wavelet analysis and proving the paramount of H.264 using OPF technique in wi-fi environment

While there has always been a tremendous demand for streaming video over Wireless networks, the nature of the application still presents some challenging issues. These applications that transmit coded video sequence data over best-effort networks like the Internet, the application must cope with the changing network behaviour; especially, the source encoder rate should be controlled based on feedback from a channel estimator that explores the network intermittently. The arrival of powerful video compression techniques such as H.264, which advance in networking and telecommunications, opened up a whole new frontier for multimedia communications. The aim of this research is to transmit the H.264 coded video frames in the wireless network with maximum reliability and in a very efficient manner. When the H.264 encoded video sequences are to be transmitted through wireless network, it faces major difficulties in reaching the destination. The characteristics of H.264 video coded sequences are studied fully and their capability of transmitting in wireless networks are examined and a new approach called Optimal Packet Fragmentation (OPF) is framed and the H.264 coded sequences are tested in the wireless simulated environment. This research has three major studies involved in it. First part of the research has the study about Long Range Dependence (LRD) and the ways by which the self-similarity can be estimated. For estimating the LRD a few studies are carried out and Wavelet-based estimator is selected for the research because Wavelets incarcerate both time and frequency features in the data and regularly provides a more affluent picture than the classical Fourier analysis. The Wavelet used to estimate the self-similarity by using the variable called Hurst Parameter. Hurst Parameter tells the researcher about how a data can behave inside the transmitted network. This Hurst Parameter should be calculated for a more reliable transmission in the wireless network. The second part of the research deals with MPEG-4 and H.264 encoder. The study is carried out to prove which encoder is superior to the other. We need to know which encoder can provide excellent Quality of Service (QoS) and reliability. This study proves with the help of Hurst parameter that H.264 is superior to MPEG-4. The third part of the study is the vital part in this research; it deals with the H.264 video coded frames that are segmented into optimal packet size in the MAC Layer for an efficient and more reliable transfer in the wireless network. Finally the H.264 encoded video frames incorporated with the Optimal Packet Fragmentation are tested in the NS-2 wireless simulated network. The research proves the superiority of H.264 video encoder and OPF's master class.

Manipulation of a Large Magneto-Optical Trap:<br />application to Four-Wave Mixing

Dans cette thèse, nous présentons une recherche expérimentale détaillée des lois caract érisant la taille et la densité atomique de grands pièges magnéto-optiques contenant typiquement 10^10 atomes. Il est bien connu que les interactions induites par laser, produites par la diffusion multiple, y constituent la limitation principale à l'obtention de densités atomiques élevées. Pour contourner cette limite, nous avons réalisé un piège magnéto-optique 'noir' combiné un piège dipolaire. Les forces de répulsion assistées par la lumière ont ainsi pu être considérablement réduites et une augmentation de près de deux ordres des grandeur sur le densité (jusqu'à 10^12 atm/cm^3) a été corrélativement observée. Nous avons proposé également un modèle qualitatif pour rendre compte de la densité atomique (et également pour la taille) o`u nous avons introduit les interactions mécaniques induites par les photons du laser repompeur quand son épaisseur optique devient importante. Ce travail fait partie d'un projet de recherche qui vise à terme à observer la localisation d'Anderson de la lumière dans des nuages d'atomes froids, mais pour laquelle des densités de l'ordre (10^13-10^14 atm/cm^3) sont requises. Pour des densités inférieures, des mécanismes de gain peuvent toutefois être mis à profit pour amplifier des modes pre-localisés. Nous avons, ainsi, mis en place une technique pompe-sonde pour la création d'un gain dans l'échantillon atomique. La configuration des pompes a autorisé l'observation du signal de mélange a quatre ondes. Une analyse détaillée de ses propriétés et de ses caractéristiques a été présentée. En particulier, une asymétrie rouge-bleu dans le spectre, pour des intensités élevées des faisceaux pompes, a été mise en évidence. Cette asymétrie a pu tre expliquée en tenant compte du regroupement des atomes dans les noeuds ou dans les ventres de l'onde stationnaire des faisceaux de pompe.

Universal Command Generator For Robotics And Cnc Machinery

In this study a universal command generator has been designed for robotics and CNC machinery. Encoding techniques has been utilized in order to represent the commands and their efficiencies have been discussed. The developed algorithm generates the trajectory of the end-effector with linear and circular interpolation in an offline fashion, the corresponding joint states and their error envelopes are computed with the utilization of a numerical inverse kinematic solver with a predefined precision. Finally, the command encoder employs the resulting data and produces the representation of positions in joint space with using proposed encoding techniques depending on the error tolerance for each joint. The encoding methods considered in this thesis are: Lossless data compression via higher order finite difference, Huffman Coding and Arithmetic Coding techniques, Polynomial Fitting methods with Chebyshev, Legendre and Bernstein Polynomials and finally Fourier and Wavelet Transformations. The algorithm is simulated for Puma 560 and Stanford Manipulators for a trajectory in order to evaluate the performances of the above mentioned techniques (i.e. approximation error, memory requirement, number of commands generated). According to the case studies, Chebyshev Polynomials has been determined to be the most suitable technique for command generation. Proposed methods have been implemented in MATLAB environment due to its versatile toolboxes. With this research the way to develop an encoding/decoding standard for an advanced command generator scheme for computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines in the near future has been paved.
