¡uAbstract¡v Information technology has been evolving continuously. No matter software or hardware, the innovative products are amazing. In recent years, the developing trends of computer aided design (CAD) system have been shifted from the simple 2-dimension plan drafting system to the 3-dimension model, which combines management, engineering, design, construction and information, and has become the goal that engineering firms pursuit. However, the information technology of engineering design today does not meet the need of engineering firms. Each firm has to analyze its need completely and thoroughly, train engineering information researchers actively, and hope that information technology can fully support its operations. Only by this way, the firm could have CAD and the information technology of engineering design that meet its demand and thus leads to a more sound and competitive mechanism. This study tries to examine on-the-job trainings discussed in the literature systemically and explore the engineering design information systems that have been completed by engineering consulting firms. Thus, we can understand every detail of work done by the researchers of engineering design information systems. Also, we interviewed those people deeply. The purpose of this study is to discuss how to integrate engineering designers and information technology and how an engineering designer is trained to be an engineering design researcher, after he or she implements an engineering design project. Therefore, he or she would become a researcher who can combine engineering design and information technology and then apply them wholly.

O ambiente TENTOS é um sistema aberto, isto é, permite a fácil inclusão de novas ferramentas em tempo de execução do gerenciador, tornando-o desta forma sempre atual em relação as ferramentas existentes. Inicialmente será feita uma breve descrição de alguns dos gerenciadores existentes, tanto os desenvolvidos com finalidades comerciais como os do meio acadêmico Em seguida, será apresentado um histórico sobre a evolução do sistema TENTOS, da sua versão inicial até a sua versão atual. Segmentation of Dimensionally-Large Rapid Prototyping Objects

An algorithm was developed to enable efficient segmentation of dimensionally-large objects into smaller components that can be fabricated within the given Rapid Prototyping (RP) machine workspace. The algorithm uses vertical and horizontal flat plane cuts, as well as feature-based volume decomposition. Due considerations were given to the optimisation of the surface accuracy, the build time, the strength and the number of segments generated by the segmentation process. A computer-aided design (CAD) application programme that interfaces with Unigraphics (UG) was also developed to allow import of objects in Standard Triangulated Language (STL) files into UG without loss of accuracy. In addition, the application software provides the functions that facilitate the implementation of the segmentation algorithm in UG. Two case studies were carried out using the algorithm in a Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) RP system. The resulting objects had properties that matched the research objectives with which the proposed algorithm was validated. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Method Development for Computer Aided Engineering for Aircraft Conceptual Design

<p>This thesis presents the work done to implement new computational tools and methods dedicated to aircraft conceptual design sizing and optimization. These tools have been exercised on different aircraft concepts in order to validate them and assess their relevance and applicability to practical cases.First, a geometry construction protocol has been developed. It is indeed essential to have a geometry description that supports the derivation of all discretizations and idealizations used by the different analysis modules (aerodynamics, weights and balance, stability and control, etc.) for which an aircraft concept is evaluated. The geometry should also be intuitive to the user, general enough to describe a wide array of morphologies and suitable for optimization. All these conditions are fulfilled by an appropriate parameterization of the geometry. In addition, a tool named CADac (Computer Aided Design aircraft) has been created in order to produce automatically a closed and consistent CAD solid model of the designs under study. The produced CAD model is easily meshable and therefore high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computations can be performed effortlessly without need for tedious and time-consuming post-CAD geometry repair.Second, an unsteady vortex-lattice method based on TORNADO has been implemented in order to enlarge to scope of flight conditions that can be analyzed. It has been validated satisfactorily for the sudden acceleration of a flat plate as well as for the static and dynamic derivatives of the Saab 105/SK 60.Finally, a methodology has been developed to compute quickly in a semi-empirical way the buffet envelope of new aircraft geometries at the conceptual stage. The parameters that demonstrate functional sensitivity to buffet onset have been identified and their relative effect quantified. The method uses a combination of simple sweep theory and fractional change theory as well as the buffet onset of a seed aircraft or a provided generic buffet onset to estimate the buffet envelope of any target geometry. The method proves to be flexible and robust enough to predict within mainly 5% (and in any case 9%) the buffet onset for a wide variety of aircrafts, from regional turboprop to long-haul wide body or high-speed business jets.This work was done within the 6<sup>th</sup> European framework project SimSAC (Simulating Stability And Control) whose task is to create a multidisciplinary simulation environment named CEASIOM (Computerized Environment for Aircraft Synthesis and Integrated Optimization Methods), oriented toward stability and control and specially suited for aircraft conceptual design sizing and optimization.</p> / SimSAC

Specifying a hybrid, multiple material CAD system for next-generation prosthetic design

For many years, the biggest issue that causes discomfort and hygiene issues for patients with lower limb amputations have been the interface between body and prosthetic, the socket. Often made of an inflexible, solid polymer that does not allow the residual limb to breathe or perspire and with no consideration for the changes in size and shape of the human body caused by changes in temperature or environment, inflammation, irritation and discomfort often cause reduced usage or outright rejection of the prosthetic by the patient in their day to day lives. To address these issues and move towards a future of improved quality of life for patients who suffer amputations, Loughborough University formed the Next Generation Prosthetics research cluster. This work is one of four multidisciplinary research studies conducted by members of this research cluster, focusing on the area of Computer Aided Design (CAD) for improving the interface with Additive Manufacture (AM) to solve some of the challenges presented with improving prosthetic socket design, with an aim to improve and streamline the process to enable the involvement of clinicians and patients in the design process. The research presented in this thesis is based on three primary studies. The first study involved the conception of a CAD criteria, deciding what features are needed to represent the various properties the future socket outlined by the research cluster needs. These criteria were then used for testing three CAD systems, one each from the Parametric, Non Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURBS) and Polygon archetypes respectively. The result of these tests led to the creation of a hybrid control workflow, used as the basis for finding improvements. The second study explored emerging CAD solutions, various new systems or plug-ins that had opportunities to improve the control model. These solutions were tested individually in areas where they could improve the workflow, and the successful solutions were added to the hybrid workflow to improve and reduce the workflow further. The final study involved taking the knowledge gained from the literature and the first two studies in order to theorise how an ideal CAD system for producing future prosthetic sockets would work, with considerations for user interface issues as well as background CAD applications. The third study was then used to inform the final deliverable of this research, a software design specification that defines how the system would work. This specification was written as a challenge to the CAD community, hoping to inform and aid future advancements in CAD software. As a final stage of research validation, a number of members of the CAD community were contacted and interviewed about their feelings of the work produced and their feedback was taken in order to inform future research in this area.

Facilitating the implementation of Computer-Aided Design into the Engineering Graphics Design classroom

The purpose of this study was to investigate what the EGD teacher needed in order to facilitate the successful implementation of CAD as an education tool into the EGD classroom. The researcher aimed to understand how teachers perceive CAD with regard to its usefulness and ease of use in an EGD class. The primary research question was as follows: What is needed to facilitate the implementation of CAD into the EGD classroom? The secondary research questions were: ? What are the barriers that prevent teachers from implementing CAD in their EGD classes? ? What lessons can be learnt from those schools where CAD has already been implemented? In the literature, the researcher looked at EGD as a subject presented in high school as well as the early roots of CAD. The external factors influencing the implementation of ICT in the classroom and the importance of CAD as a teaching tool were explored throughout the study. The theoretical framework used to support this study was the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The research approach towards this study was qualitative by nature and followed a multiple-case study design (Yin, 2003). The participants of the study were identified through a convenient-purposive sampling method. The researcher analysed data through an interpretivist point of view.
