Introduction

Fagan, C., Grugulis, C. Irena, Smith, M., Ward, K. January 2005 (has links)
The University of Manchester, England hosted the fourth Work, Employment and Society Conference, on 1¿3 September 2004. Previous WES conferences were held in Nottingham in 2001, Cambridge in 1998, and Canterbury in 1994. Two even earlier stages in the process of institutionalization were the first British Sociological Association conference on the theme of Work in 1984, and the launch of the Work, Employment and Society journal itself in 1987. Although the conference is a separately organized event, it has become de facto the conference of the WES journal.

Design and Implement of Distributed Internet Video Conferencing Service

Li, Chun-che 06 July 2005 (has links)
With the progress of the network, peoples can communicate with each other easily. The popularization of the Broadband network makes many things that could be hard to achieved becoming possible. For example, video conference, distance education and on-line games have become a part of our daily life. However, most network services are client-server architecture. This kind of service need a expensive and powerful server. The restriction will makes it difficult to improve the quality of service. P2P (peer-to-peer) architecture embodies one of the key technical concepts of the internet and many internet users was attracted by it. A peer-to-peer computer network is a network that relies on computing power at the edges (ends) of a connection rather than in the network itself. It has been used in two kinds of applications which are file sharing and distributed computing. Instead of using P2P model, client-server architecture is used in muti-user conference. A software using P2P model still needs one of the users to become a server to deal with all the messages in the conference. When the number of the users increasing, the overhead of the server will increase linearly. This makes many communication softwares to limit the number of users in a conference. Therefore, most of the companies use an expensive and powerful server offering this kind of service. In this paper, we will implement a voice-conferencing system using P2P model and the technique of distributed computing. It makes the overhead of the server in logarithmic increase. In addition, we still can configure some low-end peers with a constant overhead. No mater how the number of users increase, these peers will have a constant overhead. With the good design, we can gurantee the quality of service easily.

Liu, Yu-Sheng 12 July 2006 (has links)
The concept of Public Participation comes from democratic theory. The core assumes that people are interested in public affairs and participate constructively. The consensus conference is developed to solve democratic problems. IT invites people without specialized knowledge to discuss controversial issues before they read related data. They set important problems in the domain and ask the experts in public. they debate controversial issues and make a decision. The youth consensus conference is the promise of President Chen in April. It provides youth the opportunity to participate social democracy. And we discuss the comment response adequately, conference satisfy, and conclusion reachable to make sure the difference between experts and participators. 61.1% participators thought comment response adequately is important and better. 55.6% participators thought that the conference satisfy is important and positive. The great conclusion is anticipated. 44.1% participator had different comment in conclusion reachable. Because about half people thought conclusion reachable was not easy to achieve. The experts had almost the same opinion in comment response and they believed the existence of sufficient comment reachable system. It makes everybody would say everything. A part of experts the topics influence consensus. The experts thought the conclusions was not possible adopt by the government. The point is the knowledge gained and the process of discussion.

Canadian Newspapers and the Paris Peace Conference of 1919: A Study of English-Language Media Opinion

Sauntry, Victor January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is a study of English-language media opinion in relation to Canada’s involvement in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Using The News Record, The Globe and the Manitoba Free Press, this thesis will examine how the English Canadian press presented the Paris Peace Conference to Canadians from November 1918 to its signing in June 1918. Historians have traditionally presented the Peace Conference as a turning point in Canadian history that accelerated Canada’s maturity from a colony to a fully-fledged nation. This paper will argue that Canadians’ understanding of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 was far more complex than the orthodox interpretation would suggest. While Canadian newspapers were concerned with Canada’s status, they devoted far more attention to other matters. Canadian newspapers spent time discussing reparations, the Kaiser, old diplomacy and the future League of Nations.
