Gustavsson, Jenny January 2007 (has links)
In this final thesis, an existing method for analysis of chlorophenols (CP) in bottom sediments has been updated and adjusted for analysis of chlorophenols in soil. The covalent bonds between the chlorophenols and the soil matrix were broken through basic hydrolysis and the chlorophenols were then separated from the water phase through addition of sulphuric acid followed by ether extraction. The chromatography was improved through extractive acetylation of the chlorophenols. The updated method was then applied on soil samples from a contaminated area (a former sawmill in Hyttsjö, Östergötland, Sweden). The analyse was preformed by GC/MS with respect to 2-MonoCP, 4-MonoCP, 2,4-DiCP, 2,6-DiCP, 2,4,6-TriCP, 2,3,4,6-TetraCP and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Contamination of chlorophenols in nature can be explained by the former use of wood preservative chemicals based on chlorophenols. In the 1960s and the 1970s these chemicals were used in Sweden, but due to their toxicity they were banned by the Swedish government in 1978. In Hyttsjö a pentachlorophenol-based product named Santobrite was used for several years. The concentration of PCP in the soil samples from Hyttsjö varied from 0.2->1.8 ng/mg dry substance. 2,3,4,6- Tetrachlorophenol was also detected in some of the soil samples.

Sistema de informações geográficas aplicado ao gerenciamento da contaminação da antiga ZUPI 131, Jurubatuba, São Paulo / Geographic information system applied to the management of the contamination at the Former AUPI 131, Jurubatuba, São Paulo

Barbosa, Marcos Bolognini 31 July 2015 (has links)
The contamination of the former industrial area 131 (ZUPI 131) at the Jurubatuba area, Sao Paulo, leaded to the demarcation of a groundwater restriction zone by the government authorities which classified the areas as critically contaminated. The lack of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to manage all the data poses many challenges to the problem in the work scale. The development of GIS tool brings new light to the former ZUPI 131 integrated management and its application resulted in a conceptual model of the contamination. The adopted method has proved to be able to deal with the data systematization issues and the tool had good performance, however the data evaluation and processing had just began as well as its interpretation. The tool is dynamic and more data can be imported enabling new interpretations and advances in the cha racterization of the contamination. Spatial operations have identified priority areas for future investigations such as; verify that half of the sites lack records of past land use; characterize the rivers and the streams as main discharge zones of the porous aquifers (sediments and saprolite); characterize the main hot spots of chlorinated solvents contamination; and identify the existence of high concentrations in some of the supply wells close to sites that manipulated chlorinated solvents in the past. All these findings contribute to the integrated management of the former ZUPI 131.

[en] The sources of contaminated sites are related to several factors such as the lack of knowledge of safe procedures for handling hazardous and / or toxic substances, disrespect to these safe procedures and the occurrence of accidents or leaks during industrial processes, transportation or storage of unprocessed materials and products. In addition, contamination is usually associated with the exploration of natural resources and with the expansion of the industry and/or agrarian activities, which have happened, and are still happening, at the cost of high environmental and social risks. A contaminated site is considered a risk, since its existence can generate several problems such as damages to health, impairment of the quality of water resources, restrictions on land use and damage to public and private property, and damage to the environment. These situations, in general, involve complex risks with regard to the effects of exposure to contaminants on human health (CETESB, 2013), and may have short -, medium - or long-term effects.

[en] INFLUENCE OF THE SOIL PHYSICAL PARAMETERS IN RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH IN AREAS CONTAMINATED BY PAHS / [pt] INFLUÊNCIA DO MEIO FÍSICO NO RISCO À SAÚDE EM ÁREAS CONTAMINADAS POR HPAS

BIANCA DE SOUZA HACON 17 May 2018 (has links)
[en] In Brazil, the risks to human health from exposure to chemical compounds have been discussed since few years ago. In 2009 federal resolution CONAMA 420 was published, starting the regulation of this practice, and in 2013 the procedure of human health risk assessment (HHRA) in contaminated areas was regulated by the Brazilian Regulatory Standard (NBR) 16209. This dissertation presents a HHRA for a case study of an area contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), considering the exposure of future workers in the area. Based on the results a sensitivity analysis of the soil physical parameters of the study area was performed to determine and recommend which of the parameters should be further investigated in studies of areas contaminated with PAHs. The results of the HHRA showed that the most critical exposure pathway to case study is the inhalation of indoor air due to the occurrence of low molecular weight compounds such as naphthalene. The sensitivity analysis showed that the soil physical parameter that had greater influence on the risk results was the fraction of organic carbon (FOC). The higher the FOC the lower was the risk for inhalation in outdoor spaces, enclosed spaces or direct contact with groundwater.

[en] Given the growing number of contaminated sites identified in large urban areas, it is of crucial importance the evolution and development of treatment processes for these sites, targeting the reduction of environmental and human health risks related to soil and groundwater contamination. The main goal of this dissertation is to evaluate the efficiency of various processing methods that could be applied in the treatment of contaminated groundwater, including the ozonation and activated sludge utilization. For that, jar tests were conducted in the laboratory of Institute of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, at Braunschweig Technical University, in Germany, in three steps. The first step performed a biological treatment utilizing the activated sludge only which was collected from sewage treatment plants for the biodegradation of organic compounds present in effluents, both artificial and industrial, which simulated the effluent from a contaminated site treatment system. The second step utilized as treatment method, for the same effluent, an ozonation process, promoting the chemical oxidation of the contaminants. At last, a combination of both methods was tested where the ozonation was done prior to the biodegradation. The objective of this step was to evaluate the additional results of the biodegradation of the effluent when an ozonation process is done first. The results showed, in addiction of the color removal from the effluent, a larger reduction of DQO when both techniques are combined, suggesting that the combination can be a good alternative for treatment of high complexity wastewater.
