In this thesis, we study the effects of doping in two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets. We consider cases where the undoped parent compound is a Mott insulator with long-range antiferromagnetic order and focus on the low-doping situations. The limit of localized impurities is studied in a system consisting of a host magnet and two additional weakly coupled spins. We derive the effective Hamiltonian describing the interaction between these impurities as a function of their distance and show that it exhibits xyz anisotropy, leading to NMR and EPR line broadening. We calculate the magnetization disturbance in the host magnet induced by a single impurity and find that it always enhances Neel order. Relaxing the localization constraint, we investigate the single-hole dynamics of the t-J model on the honeycomb lattice. Using exact diagonalizations, series expansion and the self-consistent Born approximation, we calculate the quasi-particle dispersion, bandwidth and residues and compare our findings with the well-established results for the square lattice. Similar to the latter case, we find an almost flat band along the edges of the magnetic Brillouin zone and well-defined hole pockets around the corners. The most important part of this thesis is devoted to the magnetic properties of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4, the simplest and by far most studied cuprate superconductor. Starting from the undoped parent compound, we calculate the spin-wave spectrum and the spin-flop transitions in a uniform magnetic field at zero temperature. We then consider the low-doping regime and derive the effective field theory describing the spin dynamics in insulating La2-xSrxCuO4, x ≤ 0.055, at low temperature. The spin structure resulting from the spiral solution of the extended t-J model, obtained by taking into account the Coulomb trapping of holes by Sr ions, is confined in the copper-oxide planes. Our solution explains why the incommensurate structure is directed along the orthorhombic b axis and allows us to calculate the positions and shapes of the neutron scattering peaks numerically. These results are in perfect agreement with experimental data. We also show that topological defects (spin vortex-antivortex pairs) are an intrinsic property of the spin-glass ground state.

The purpose of this investigation was to explore the processing parameters involved in the production of thin film superconductors by spray pyrolysis processing (SPP). The present study is an attempt to optimize the many parameters in SPP. The specific parameters studied were substrate temperature, carrier gas flow rate, substrate materials, solution stoichiometry, spray rate, concentration, starting materials, and substrate to nozzle distance. The effect of these parameters on film stoichiometry and the anticipated superconducting behavior were investigated at some length. Films were routinely produced in a spray chamber designed as a part of this research. Films were analyzed by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Meissner effect measurements.

Magnetic phase diagram of Ca₂₊xY₂₋xCu₅O₁₀₋[delta]: oxygen hole-doping effectsPark, Keeseong, 1972- 28 August 2008 (has links)
Oxygen hole-doping effects on a spin-chain system, Ca[subscript 2+chi]Y[2-chi]Cu₅O[subscript 10-delta](CaYCuO) are reported. CaYCuO is a good specimen to study the magnetic properties of the CuO₂ chain at the ground state because it has no complex structure other than the chain and it has hole dopability up to the formal copper valence number of +2.4. Specifically, we can dope holes into the CuO₂ chain by substituting Ca²⁺ for Y³⁺ or by utilizing oxygen deficiency. After a systematic study of the two methods to dope holes, we found that oxygen doping makes a more critical change in magnetic ordering in the chain than the replacement of Ca²⁺. Oxygen deficiency effects of the chain on the magnetic properties were explained using a mean field theory. A new relation for the effective hole doping was found as p = x - [alpha delta], where a = 3/2(x - [delta]) - 1/4. We study the anisotropy of magnetic properties of single crystal Li-cathode material (LiFePO₄) for g-factor, Curie-Weiss temperature, and effective moment. Magnetic properties Au/SiO₂ coated [gamma]-Fe₂O₃ are compared with pure [gamma]-Fe₂O₃ finding a decrease in the blocking temperature and the irreversible temperature for the coated nanoparticles. / text

Neutron scattering and praseodymium suppression of superconductivityLongmore, A. January 1995 (has links)
PrBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>6</sub><sub>+</sub><sub>x</sub> is anomalous among the compounds which can be made by substituting different rare-earth ions for yttrium (Y) in YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>6</sub><sub>+</sub><sub>x</sub>:it is the only compound which has the same structure as YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>6</sub><sub>+</sub><sub>x</sub>, and yet does not superconduct. This unusual property makes it an important system to study, since the differences between the two compounds could produce theoretical insights into the mechanisms of cuprate, or high-temperature, superconductivity. This thesis describes neutron scattering investigations of the magnetic properties of PrBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>6</sub><sub>+</sub><sub>x</sub>. I have investigated the magnetic ordering in well-characterised, single-crystal samples, both with and without Al-contamination. In the data analysis, proper account is taken of the sample mosaicity and the different intrinsic peak shapes encountered. Some of the most striking new characteristics reported here are that (i), there is a clear interaction between the Pr ions and the Cu-O<sub>2</sub> planes, (ii), the ordered Pr moments tilt away from the c-axis (as suggested previously by Mossbauer spectroscopy), and (iii), there is two-dimensional ordering in the Al-containing crystals. I show how observed trends in the magnetic ordering, as O- and Al-contents vary, may be understood in terms of charge redistribution involving the hybridisation of the Pr ions. I have also examined the crystal field transitions of the praseodymium ion. Because of the difficulties previously encountered in measuring these in PrBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>6</sub><sub>+</sub><sub>x</sub>, I have used instead the compounds PrO<sub>2</sub> and Y<sub>0.3</sub>Pr<sub>0.7</sub>Ba<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>4</sub>O<sub>8</sub>, which contain praseodymium in a chemically similar environment. Y<sub>0.3</sub>Pr<sub>0.7</sub>Ba<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>4</sub>O<sub>8</sub> shows the same broadening effects as PrBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>6</sub><sub>+</sub><sub>x</sub>; PrO<sub>2</sub> shows signs of mixed-valency, with temperature-dependent lifetime effects. The application of symmetry considerations and the point-charge model to the crystal field measurements is considered in some detail.
