Resonance photo-ionisation mass spectrometry techniques for the analysis of heavy noble gas isotopes in extra-terrestrial samplesNottingham, Mark January 2017 (has links)
The field of noble gas mass spectrometry is a rapidly developing one. There is a sustained requirement for continuous development of instrumentation in order to allow researchers to answer critical questions facing their respective fields. Within planetary science, the question of whether our solar system is 'typical', has been a driving force behind many lines of research. This project sought to build upon the strong instrumental base of the Isotope Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry group of the University of Manchester, in order to develop the Resonance Ionisation Mass Spectrometer for Krypton Isotopes. From that basis, it then sought to develop techniques and protocols for the analysis of extra-terrestrial samples, particularly those of very low mass. The thesis is broken down into three studies. The first involved the development of the mechanisms used to fill the Xe-Ar four-wave mixing cell. This section covers the development, implementation, and characterisation of the newly installed mass flow controllers. The additional control over the mixing ratio granted allowed an eightfold increase to the sensitivity of the instrument. The reproducibility of the gas ratio is consistently shown throughout, and has ultimately reduced the tuning time of the instrument from a number of weeks to a day. The second section details the required procedures involved in data reduction, and the development of protocols and software for the RIMSKI instrument. A range of approaches are assessed, including a novel approach to cosmic ray exposure age calculations. The methods are discussed and implemented on extra-terrestrial samples, the Stannern eucrite and the Bereba eucrite. Finally, the analytical limits of the RIMSKI instrument are expanded via the measurement of the krypton systems of individual calcium-aluminium-rich inclusions. It is observed that Allende CAIs show a trapped component, Br-derived Kr, as well as an anomalous 'heavy Kr' component (one that is enriched in 86Kr). It is additionally noted that there is a lack of cosmogenic krypton to be found in all but one of the measured inclusions. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Mesures du flux d'électrons, du flux de positons, et de leur rapport avec l'expérience AMS-02 : interprétation en terme de matière noire et pulsars / Measurement of the positron fraction and of the electron and positron fluxes with the AMS-02 experiment and interpretation in terms of dark matter and pulsarsCaroff, Sami 04 October 2016 (has links)
AMS-02 is a magnetic spectrometer design for the cosmic ray and gamma ray detection. The measurement in 2013 of the positron fraction by AMS-02 confirmed the presence of a primary positron component, which means the existence of a galactic primary source of positrons. This thesis is devoted exclusively to the study of this phenomenon. The positron fraction, the positron flux, and the electron flux are measured using a method of multidimensional fit developed during this thesis. The charge confusion phenomenon, which is important at the highest energies, is investigated. The instrumental response function of the detector is evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations and is corrected using the ISS data. A phenomenological work is done to interpret the measured results. The interpretation of these results in terms of primary component from a local pulsar and dark matter halo is done. The implications and the parameter space allowed for each model is detailed. A reevaluation of secondaries with the new AMS-02 data, and the study of the impact of the experimental error of AMS-02 on these results is performed.

Double Chooz is a short-baseline experiment, located at the Chooz power plant, designed to observe the neutrino oscillation signal controlled by the θ13 mixing angle. Part of my scientific research, as a graduate student, was directed towards the development of the software needed for the calibration of the Double Chooz Inner Veto and the analysis of the data associated with this task. I was responsible for the quality tests performed in every photomultiplier prior to its installation. I completed all the necessary measurements and analysed the data, extracting the first set of gains and determining the nominal high voltage values needed to be applied in all photomultipliers. All this information served as valuable input to the detector configuration. I was also responsible for the Inner Veto photomultiplier gain analysis during the first months of data taking. I was also very actively involved in data analysis and the estimations of the various sources of background. I initiated a number of methods to isolate and study the cosmic muon events that activate the detector. Additionally I worked on the estimation of the fast neutron rate registered in the detector. The techniques I put forward played a key role and were used in the first Double Chooz publication. Finally, I developed a set of algorithms to identify and reject an instrumental background, relevant for the Double Chooz detector using topological information of the deposited charge.

Since the first ultra high-energy cosmic rays detected by Pierre Auger (the 30s) the entire community of Physics of Cosmic Rays search for mathematical techniques and more appropriate statistical methods to analyze these events. These analysis processes are essential for the estimate of the energy of the primary particle as well as in the calculation of the angle of arrival q . The estimate of the energy and the angle q is the end of a long chain of analysis and the beginning of a new line of research in the search for the possible sources that produced such events.
Throughout this work we re-analysed the reconstruction chain of the "Auger showers", the socalled "Extensive Air Showers - EAS", using a relatively new concept of statistics, known as Robust Statistics.
The Least Square Method - LS, presented by Gauss and Legendre had limitations already recognized by themselves who tried to overcome them without success. Since the end of the eighteenth century and beginning of the nineteenth century, strictly parametric methods, especially the Least Squares and the arithmetic average, were questioned when used to describe distributions with bad behavior or with large uctuations. Some of the main issues were related to how to deal with points far way from the main distribution (the so-called outliers) and how it in uenced the main distribution. The more conventional way out used was the rejection of the outliers and points that produced large deviations from average. But the loss of information about the distribution was inevitable. The parametric model proved to be only an approximation of reality, since uctuations, despite being considered, are not "welcome"; are seen only as an error inherent in observation. Then, at the end of the nineteenth century there appeared the first attempts to extract information from uctuations sorting them out and considering them as an integral part of the description of the distribution.
Whether a statistical method is able to describe observed data, including and sorting the uctuations inherent, then becomes known as "Robust Method" or "Robust Statistic", where the nomenclature "Robust" is related the ability of the method or model to "Resist" the uctuations by providing a description of reality with reasonable independence these same uctuations.
Based on two robust methods: Least Median Square - LMS and Least Trimmed Square - LTS; we apply these to adjust the Lateral Distribution Function - LDF extracting the value of S1000, parameter needed to estimate the energy of the primary particle. The values for S1000 calculated from conventional statistic (Least Square) and robust statistic (LMS and LTS) are compared.
The parameter S1000 is dependent on the angle of arrival of the shower, then we apply a correction factor called S38. This correlates S1000 and and, currently, there are several ways to calculate this factor. The three hypotheses most used by Auger Collaboration are presented in this work.
We then correlate all new values of S38 with the values of the so-called "Hybrid Energy", obtained directly from analysis software of the Auger Collaboration. This relationship allows us to correct the energy based on hybrid detection that is great advantage of the Pierre Auger Observatory.
This relationship allows us to establish the energy scale or calibration of the surface detector on the basis of the calorimetric determination of the energy done by the uorescence detector which is the great advancement brought to the field by the Pierre Auger Observatory.
With the new results for the energy we reanalysed the the correlation with extra-galactic sources of cosmic ray getting new correlations, which are absent in the conventional methods of analysis.
Finally we make an analysis of the surface stations outliers by themselves trying to extract some information relevant for their performance.

This PhD Thesis has been achieved thanks to the joint effort between two French organizations, the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN/LMDN, Cadarache) and the French Aerospace Lab (ONERA/ DESP, Toulouse). The aim was to develop an operational neutron spectrometer extended to high energies in order to measure the dynamics of the spectral variations of the natural radiative environment at the summit of the Pic du Midi Observatory in the French Pyrenees. Thereby, the fluence responses of each detector were calculated thanks to Monte Carlo simulations. Afterwards, they were validated by means of experimental campaigns up to high energies (>20 MeV) nearby reference neutron fields. The systematic uncertainties were deduced after detailed studies of the mathematic reconstruction of the spectra (i.e. unfolding procedure). Then, the system was tested under rocks at the LSBB of Rustrel before being installed at respectively+500 m and +1000 m above sea level for the first environmental campaigns. Finally, the spectrometer has been operating for two years after its deployment at the summit of the Pic du Midi (+2885 m). The continuous data were analysed thanks to an innovative method. Some seasonal and spectral variations were observed. Some Forbush decreases were also recorded after strong solar flares. These data were further analysed thanks to Monte Carlo simulations. The data were made more attractive thanks toseveral practical applications with personal dosimetry or reliability of submicron electronics components.

L’instrument EUSO-Balloon et analyse de son efficacité de photo-détection / The EUSO-balloon instrument and an analysis of its photo-detecting efficiencyRabanal Reina, Julio Arturo 08 December 2016 (has links)
JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on Japanese Experiment Module) is an experiment based on a diffractive optical telescope, with Fresnel lenses, that will be installed on the ISS in 2020. It aims to study the UHECR, improving by a factor of 10 the current measurements of the Pierre-Auger Observatory. The EUSO-Balloon telescope, technically validated in 2014, was the first prototype with the entire detection chain of the JEM-EUSO telescope. The detection principle is based on the capture of individual UV photons (photodetection) produced by fluorescence when the EAS interact with the Earth’s atmosphere. The fluorescence light is so low that an instrument with 100% efficiency for the detection of a photon, is required. The work presented in this manuscript has dealt with all the steps of EUSO-Balloon project. An original procedure has been developed to recover the information from pixels with low sensitivity. The method consists in using a curve generated by the modification of the threshold used to discriminate the analog signals produced by the anodes of the MAPMTs. It is valid for all EUSO telescopes and will be most useful in space where the manipulation of the apparatus is limited.

Characterisation and modelling of the interaction between sub-Kelvin bolometric detectors and cosmic rays / Caractérisation et modélisation de l'interaction entre les détecteurs bolométriques sub-Kelvin et les rayons cosmiquesStever, Samantha Lynn 08 January 2019 (has links)
We have studied the effect of cosmic rays in detectors using a composite NTD germanium bolometer at low temperatures and an alpha particle source as a generic source of pulses. We have characterised this bolometer, finding that its pulse shape is due to a combination of its impulse response function (the sum of two double exponentials), and position-dependent effects arising from thermalisation of ballistic phonons into thermal phonons in its absorber. We have derived a scheme for describing the pulse shape in this bolometer, comparing a generic mathematical pulse shape with a second description based on thermal physics. We find that ballistic phonon thermalisation, followed by thermal diffusion, play a significant role in the pulse shape, along with electro-thermal coupling and temperature-dependent electrical effects. We have modelled the pulses, finding that their behaviour can be reproduced accounting for ballistic phonon reflection off the absorber border, with a strong thermal coupling to the bolometer’s central sensor. With these findings, we also investigate the effects of cosmic rays on the Athena X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), producing simulated timelines and testing the average RMS temperature increase on the detector wafer, showing that the expected cosmic ray thermal flux is within the same order of magnitudeas the maximum allowed ΔTRMS, posing a threat to the instrument’s energy resolution budget.

[en] RESTRICTING THE VIOLATION OF EQUIVALENCE PRINCIPLE BY ICECUBE S ATMOSPHERIC NEUTRINO DATA / [pt] RESTRINGINDO A VIOLAÇÃO DO PRINCÍPIO DA EQUIVALÊNCIA COM DADOS DE NEUTRINOS ATMOSFÉRICOS DO ICECUBELIZANDRA MINEIRO CAMPOS CHAGAS 27 August 2024 (has links)
\Phi \Delta\gamma_21 no plano (\Phi \Delta\gamma_21 , \Phi \Delta\gamma_31), onde o \Phi é o potencial gravitacional.
[en] The equivalence principle is a fundamental assumption of General Relativity. However, in several quantum gravity scenarios, small violations of thisprinciple (VEP) is expected. For this reason, it is important to test this principle and obtain statistical limits on its violation, in order to possibly discardsome scenarios. One way to constrain this violation is analyzing the flavor oscillation pattern of high-energy atmospheric neutrinos, generated by cosmicrays. The standard oscillation of neutrino s flavor crossing the Earth becomesnegligible at high energies, while the oscillation induced by VEP becomes increasingly prominent in this range of energy. In this work, we use a minimalisticapproach about the VEP, in which it would occur because of different valuesof gravitational constants for each neutrino mass eigenstate, parameterized asGi ≡ γiG where G is the gravitational constant, and we derive limits on theparameters Phi Deltagamma_21 and Phi Deltagamma_21 in the (Phi Deltagamma_21 , Phi Deltagamma_31) plane, where Phi is thegravitational potential. To this end, muon-tracks events generated from theinteraction of atmospheric neutrinos with the rock or ice, collected for oneyear by IceCube in its complete form (IC-86), were used. The detected muonshave energies between 400 GeV and 20 TeV, and the collected data has beencompared with the values expected by the best models of atmospheric muonneutrino production.

gama no espaço.
[en] As we enter the precision era of multi-messenger astronomy, new windows are opened for us to better understand the Universe, from quantum to cosmic scales. In particular, the study of high-energy astrophysical phenomena has allowed us to probe the most extreme environments known to mankind, as well as obtain unprecedented breakthroughs within the realm of particle physics. This thesis summarizes the important findings of multi-messenger astrophysics over the years, before focusing its attention to three relevant
topics currently being investigated in the field. Firstly, we tackle the problem of γ-ray propagation in space. High center-of-momenta interactions during this process leads to the formation of electromagnetic cascades that develop over cosmological distances. We describe a semi-analytical code called “γ-Cascade, which calculates the fluxes at the Earth resulting from such cascades. We also explore the possibility of producing neutrinos in ultra-high-energy cascades. Secondly, we establish a new, original multi-messenger connection between the measured fluxes of TeV–PeV astrophysical neutrinos and ultra-high-energy
cosmic rays. This is done by taking advantage of our precise γ-ray observations at sub-TeV energies, demonstrating the power of multi-messenger analyses. Finally, we study the evolution of the flavor composition of supernova neutrinos in a model-independent way. Our novel method allows for predictions of the neutrino flavor content measured at the Earth from supernovae, accounting for matter effects within its dense environment, while remaining completely agnostic about the outcome of self-induced flavor conversions in its core.

The JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on-board the Japanese Experiment Module) international space mission is designed to observe UHECRs by detecting the UV fluorescence light emitted by the so-called Extensive Air Shower (EAS) which develop when UHECRs interact with the Earth’s atmosphere. The showers consist of tens of billions or more secondary particles crossing the atmosphere at nearly the speed of light, which excite nitrogen molecules which then emit light in the UV range. While this so-called “fluorescence technique'” is routinely used from the ground, by operating from space, JEM-EUSO will, for the first time, provide high-statistics on these events. Operating from space, with a large Field-of-View of ±30 °, allows JEM-EUSO to observe a much larger volume of atmosphere, than possible from the ground, collecting an unprecedented number of UHECR events at the highest energies. For the four pathfinder experiments built within the collaboration, we have been developing a common set of electronics, in particular the central data acquisition system, capable of operating from the ground, high altitude balloons, and space. These pathfinder experiments all use a detector consisting of one Photo-detection Modules (PDMs) identical to the 137 that will be present on the JEM-EUSO focal surface. UV light generated by high-energy particle air showers passes the UV filter and impacts the Multi-anode Photomultiplier Tubes (MAPMT). Here UV photons are converted into electrons, which are multiplied by the MAPMTs and fed into Elementary Cell Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (EC-ASIC) boards, which perform the photon counting and charge estimation. The PDM control board interfaces with these ASIC boards, providing power and configuration parameters, collecting data and performing the level 1 trigger. I was in charge of designing, developing, integrating, and testing the PDM control board for the EUSO-TA and EUSO-Balloon missions as well as the autonomous trigger algorithm testing and I also performed some analysis of the EUSO-Balloon flight data and data from the EUSO-TA October 2015 run.In this thesis, I will give a short overview of high-energy cosmic rays, including their detection technique and the leading experiments (Chapter 1), describe JEM-EUSO and its pathfinders including a description of each instrument (Chapter 2), present the details of the design and the fabrication of the PDM (Chapter 3) and PDM control board (Chapter 4), as well as the EUSO-TA and EUSO-Balloon integration tests (Chapter 5). I will report on the EUSO-Balloon campaign (Chapter 6) and results (Chapter 7), including a specific analysis developed to search for global variations of the ground UV emissivity, and apply a similar analysis to data collected at the site of Telescope Array (Chapter 8). Finally, I will present the implementation and testing of the first-level trigger (L1) within the FPGA of the PDM control board (Chapter 9). A short summary of the thesis will be given in Chapter 10.
