<p>The first measurements of the two- and three-body photodisintegration of longitudinally</p><p>polarized 3He with a circularly-polarized gamma-ray beam were carried out at the High Intensity gamma-ray Source facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). A high pressure 3He target, polarized via spin exchange optical pumping with alkali metals, was used in the experiments. The protons from the two-body photodisintegration experiment were detected using seventy two silicon surface barrier detectors of various thicknesses while the neutrons from the three-body photodisintegration were detected with sixteen 12.7 cm diameter liquid scintillator detectors. The spin-dependent cross sections and the contributions from the two- and three-body photodisintegration to the 3He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule integrand were extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-body calculations at the incident photon energies of 29.0 MeV (two-body) and 12.8, 14.7, and 16.5 MeV (three-body).</p><p>These are the first measurements of the contributions of the two- and three-body photodisintegration of 3He to the GDH integrand. These measurements were found to be in good agreement with the theoretical calculations which include the Coulomb interaction between protons in the final state. They also reveal-for the first time-the importance of the three-nucleon forces and the relativistic single-nucleon charge corrections which are responsible in the calculations for the observed difference</p><p>between the spin-dependent cross sections.</p> / Dissertation

A study of highly-deformed α-cluster structures in light nucleiSimmons, Peter Mark January 1995 (has links)
The inelastic scattering reaction <sup>16</sup>0+<sup>12</sup>C has been studied in the centre-of-mass energy region from 37.7 MeV to 51.4 MeV, in a search for evidence for a seven-alpha chain state in <sup>28</sup>Si. The decay products were detected in coincidence at angular separations around 90° in the centre of mass using two position-sensitive strip detectors. Kinematic reconstruction of the quasi-three body final states yielded the differential cross-sections for the decay channels leading to excited states in <sup>12</sup>C, <sup>16</sup>0 and <sup>20</sup>Ne. The excitation functions measured for the <sup>12 C(0+<sub>2</sub>)-<sup>12</sup>C(0+<sub>2</sub>)-U+03B1 and 12<sup>C</sup>(0<sub>2</sub>)-<sup>8</sup>Be-<sup>8</sup>Be final states agree broadly between the three experiments that were performed, but contain no structure. Reaction channels have also been identified leading to the <sup>8</sup>Be-<sup>20</sup>Ne* and <sup>12</sup>C*-<sup>16<sup>0* final states. The cross-sections for the <sup>8</sup>Be-<sup>20</sup>Ne* decay channels, with the <sup>20</sup> Ne in its lowest excited states, have been compared with previous measurements and provide good agreement. However, none of the excitation functions for these channels contain any structure. The absence of structure in any of the final states, that were identified in this study, indicates that a <sup>28</sup>Si chain state is probably not being observed. The same model, that predicts that the seven-alpha chain state should lie in this excitation region in <sup>28</sup>Si, has also been used to assign a six alpha chain structure to a resonance at E<sub>x</sub>=46.6 MeV in <sup>24</sup> Mg. These two results are compared, and possible reasons for the absence of evidence for a <sup>28</sup>Si chain structure are discussed.

We compute the anomalous dimension (gamma)(n) and (gamma)(,ns)(n) needed in the evaluation of the polarized structure function G(,1)(q('2)) in electron-proton scattering, up to and including the order g('4) contributions in the minimal subtraction scheme in perturbative QCD. Both the analytic expression and the numerical result for (gamma)(n) and (gamma)(,ns)(n) with n = 2, 4, 6,..., 20 are obtained. We also evaluate the second moment of flavor singlet and the flavor non-singlet part of G(,1)(q('2)) in QCD, with 4 and 6 flavors with the Wilson coefficients left as unknowns.
