This study is limited to the mathematics performance of two intact groups of culturally deprived kindergarten students, mostly blacks, with a few whites and Mexican-Americans, who were enrolled at Robert E. Lee Elementary School (Denton, Texas) for the entire school year of 1970-1971. The purposes of the study are to compare the effectiveness of two methods of teaching mathematics to culturally disadvantaged children and to check for interaction of treatments when these children are classified by sex.

Hodnotová orientace mládeže ze socio-kulturně znevýhodněného prostředí / Value orientation of young people from socially and culturally disadvantaged backgrounds

The goal of the thesis is describing the value orientation of young people from the socially and culturally disadvantaged surroundings. The thesis is theoretical and empirical and it has a qualitative character. The research pattern are young people who are visiting a low- threshold facility for children and teenagers. We are describing the issue of the age of young people, conception of values, evaluation process, classification of values, value orientation, education to values, moral development of human, socially and culturally disadvantaged surroundings, family, peer groups and the low-threshold facility for children and teenagers in the theoretical part. There was performed an analysis of the value orientation of the selected group of respondents based on the data from semi-structured interview in practical part. The results of research shows that the part of the value orientation of the young people is the family, life in prosperity, free time, education, friends, interest activities, love, surroundings, make own family and responsibility. These parts characterize what is important, valuable and necessary for the respondents.

The presented study is designed as a comparative theoretical work, comparing two concepts of the approach to the education of children from socio-culturally deprivational background, with a focus on pupils with different mother tongues. The countries, whose educational systems are compared, are selected on the basis of my longterm pedagogical experience - France and the Czech Republic. The work detects the development of pro-inclusive measures in the school systems of both countries, the development and comparison of existing legislative measures, and together with a research probe within this education and examples of practice from the French allophone education has the potential to give a comprehensive picture of this educational domain. The presented material aims to support the discussion in the field of education of children - pupils and students with different mother tongues - in the Czech Republic.

Sociokulturně znevýhodněné prostředí a jeho vliv na dítě předškolního věku / Socioculturally disadvantaged environment and its influence on pre-school child

SUMMARY: The thesis describes a situation of the part of inhabitants of the Czech Republic that are currently regarded as socio-culturally disadvantaged. It aims to term factors that endanger a healthy and harmonic development of children living in a socio-culturally disadvantaged environment. The means of child protection are specified on international and national level and the current legislation in this field is reviewed. The thesis also deals with the position of ethnic minorities in the Czech Republic and concentrates on Romany minority. On the example of one city district of Prague is presented the lifestyle of Romany community, their cohabitation with the majority and their usage of Romany ethnolect. Possible causes of formation of socially excluded communities are listed together with social and health risks for Romany people that concentrate in such local communities. The situation in the field of education of pre-school children coming from a socio-culturally disadvantaged environment is described and legislative and executive measures to support their access to education are reviewed. Social determinants of health are termed and their impact on Roma community in the Czech Republic is assessed.
