Classifying Lambda-modules up to Isomorphism and Applications to Iwasawa Theory

abstract: In Iwasawa theory, one studies how an arithmetic or geometric object grows as its field of definition varies over certain sequences of number fields. For example, let $F/\mathbb{Q}$ be a finite extension of fields, and let $E:y^2 = x^3 + Ax + B$ with $A,B \in F$ be an elliptic curve. If $F = F_0 \subseteq F_1 \subseteq F_2 \subseteq \cdots F_\infty = \bigcup_{i=0}^\infty F_i$, one may be interested in properties like the ranks and torsion subgroups of the increasing family of curves $E(F_0) \subseteq E(F_1) \subseteq \cdots \subseteq E(F_\infty)$. The main technique for studying this sequence of curves when $\Gal(F_\infty/F)$ has a $p$-adic analytic structure is to use the action of $\Gal(F_n/F)$ on $E(F_n)$ and the Galois cohomology groups attached to $E$, i.e. the Selmer and Tate-Shafarevich groups. As $n$ varies, these Galois actions fit into a coherent family, and taking a direct limit one obtains a short exact sequence of modules $$0 \longrightarrow E(F_\infty) \otimes(\mathbb{Q}_p/\mathbb{Z}_p) \longrightarrow \Sel_E(F_\infty)_p \longrightarrow \Sha_E(F_\infty)_p \longrightarrow 0 $$ over the profinite group algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[\Gal(F_\infty/F)]]$. When $\Gal(F_\infty/F) \cong \mathbb{Z}_p$, this ring is isomorphic to $\Lambda = \mathbb{Z}_p[[T]]$, and the $\Lambda$-module structure of $\Sel_E(F_\infty)_p$ and $\Sha_E(F_\infty)_p$ encode all the information about the curves $E(F_n)$ as $n$ varies. In this dissertation, it will be shown how one can classify certain finitely generated $\Lambda$-modules with fixed characteristic polynomial $f(T) \in \mathbb{Z}_p[T]$ up to isomorphism. The results yield explicit generators for each module up to isomorphism. As an application, it is shown how to identify the isomorphism class of $\Sel_E(\mathbb{Q_\infty})_p$ in this explicit form, where $\mathbb{Q}_\infty$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, and $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with good ordinary reduction at $p$, and possessing the property that $E(\mathbb{Q})$ has no $p$-torsion. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Mathematics 2011

Quantum propagation and initial value problems in curved space

Quantum field theory is studied within the semi-classical gravity approximation. The quantum correction to the propagation of both photons and gravitons in a general curved space background is calculated showing a non-trivial spacetime refractive index as well as a dynamical dressing (or undressing) of the particle state. The initial interacting particle's 'dressing', the cloud of virtual particles that surrounds it, may receive corrections from an infinite number of modes even for flat space. When gravitational tidal effects remove this dressing, squeezing it back into the bare particle, this leads to an amplification in a way consistent with unitarity. There is a possible shift discovered in the graviton wavefront velocity related to higher order curvature couplings, although in this calculation there is also a logarithmic divergence at high frequencies, leading to a breakdown of the perturbative approximation. Next we consider initial value problems and the stability of de Sitter space. Here the self decay of a massive scalar in de Sitter space is proposed to lead to a particle explosion where divergent growth of the field expectation value is observed. Directly investigating this divergent field expectation value a one loop calculation is completed for a massive scalar particle in 3-dimensional de Sitter space. This result has characteristic secular growth that can be summed into a rapidly decaying exponential by using the dynamical renormalisation group. Finally the evolution of two point functions is studied, by numerically solving their equations of motion using the Kaydanoff-Baym equations in 2-dimensional de Sitter space. Here we see a decay of the vacuum state due to the coupling. This appears to be related to the choice of initial conditions be chosen to match the free field vacuum plus non-interacting particles. This choice is made inappropriate by the dynamical dressing of the bare particle states.

Due to these limitations, the objective of this work was to evaluate the creation of growth curves for site classification by the nonlinear quantile regression method and to compare them with the curves generated by the algebraic difference method. The database was collected in two mesoregions of the state of São Paulo (Paulista and Bauru Metropolitan Macro), with 460 measurements in 98 plots with distinct periods in Eucalyptus sp. The site curves were adjusted according to the Chapman-Richards model using the algebraic difference method for anamorphic and polymorphic curves and nonlinear quantum regression (RNLQ). The results of this work allowed to conclude that the site curves adjusted by the RNLQ method are superior to the curves generated by the algebraic difference method by graphical analysis of the residuals with smaller ranged of the errors and greater homogeneity and residual standard error with lower values in the classes in general. / A capacidade produtiva é estimada convencionalmente por meio de curvas de sítio calculadas de forma anamórfica ou polimórfica, contudo, estas curvas possuem algumas limitações. Devido a estas limitações, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a criação de curvas de crescimento para classificação de sítio pelo método de regressão não linear quantílica e compará-las com as curvas geradas pelo método da diferença algébrica. A ba se de dados foi coletada em duas mesorregiões do estado de São Paulo (Macro Metropolitana Paulista e Bauru), com 460 medições em 98 parcelas com períodos distintos em Eucalyptus sp. As curvas de sítio foram ajustadas segundo modelo de Chapman-Richards pelo método da diferença algébrica para curvas anamórficas e polimórficas e regressão não linear quantílica (RNLQ). Os resultados deste trabalho permitiram concluir que as curvas de sítio ajustadas pelo método da RNLQ são superiores às curvas geradas pelo método da diferença algébrica pela análise gráfica dos resíduos com menor amplitude dos erros e maior homogeneidade e erro padrão residual com menores valores nas classes em geral.

Non-commutative Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves at primes of multiplicative reduction

Let E be an elliptic curve defined over the rationals Q, and p be a prime at least 5 where E has multiplicative reduction. This thesis studies the Iwasawa theory of E over certain false Tate curve extensions F[infinity], with Galois groupG = Gal(F[infinity]/Q). I show how the p[infinity]-Selmer group of E over F[infinity] controls the p[infinity]-Selmer rank growth within the false Tate curve extension, and how it is connected to the root numbers of E twisted by absolutely irreducible orthogonal Artin representations of G, and investigate the parity conjecture for twisted modules.
