Decision-making for sustainable transport planning : reducing car dependency culture in Alexandria, Egypt

Hassan, Sara January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the challenges and barriers of reducing car dependency culture to achieve urban sustainability in Egypt. This is operationalised by identifying different policy options and theoretically examining a nested-case study empirically. A more important purpose behind this academic enterprise was to find more robust and nuanced explanations of the constant failure of the transport planning system in Egyptian cities. The adoption of a cultural-oriented analytical framework to examine decision-making processes demonstrated a way forward in the re-evaluation of current transport policy directions in Egypt. The research applies qualitative methods to a nested case study in Alexandria through the Sustainable Urban Transport Project, 2032. The rigorous data-collection methods included extensive documentary analysis, elite interviews, semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations. The results obtained from applying these unconventional methods of social and political sciences in transport planning studies show the richness of these research methods in providing comprehensive explanations. This research illustrates the value of placing policy and transport-planning-related studies into the centre of different research positions. The main contributions of this research are grounded on a number of key research findings. First, the development of a cultural-oriented analytical framework based on the central thesis of polyrationality. Second, the research pioneers the approach of identifying the relevant stakeholders and contexts in transport decision-making processes in Egypt which serves as a basis for other future transport-related research for Egypt. This research builds the foundation for conducting multidisciplinary research for transport planning studies. The final contribution of this research suggests the need for mediators or policy analysts who have relevant education and knowledge in the transport planning sector to influence the decision-making processes.

Peripheral integration and disintegration in Europe: the "European dependency school" revisited

Weissenbacher, Rudy 03 1900 (has links) (PDF)
In this contribution to the history of theory, the author reconsiders the impact of the Latin American dependency paradigm on Europe. The analysis does not deal with the reception of the Latin American dependency school itself, the focus lies on elements of this school as they were used to explain the European situation in the 1970s and 1980s. For that purpose, it delineates research networks and their analyses of core-periphery relations in Europe. All these networks had a critical attitude towards the old development paradigm. Some called it development "from above" or "to the outside". A new paradigm was to include strategic elements of a "selective spatial closure" and "self-reliance". For many, the European integration process played an important role in their estimates of future developments. Much of this analysis still seems relevant and topical today. The author considers it fruitful to take up the research agenda of the "European dependency school", to re-define it and adapt it to altered contemporary circumstances.

Gamblerství / Gambling

POSPÍŠILOVÁ, Nikola January 2011 (has links)
Thesis concentrates on the problem of gambling on the second grade of the basic school. Thesis consists of two parts " theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is target on characterising of the term dependency and characterise causes and conditions of the dependency inception. Thereinafter the thesis target on the diagnostic of dependencies for basic school teachers and their managing of problems with the dependency. The thesis tries to find out possibilities and efficiency of the prevention on the basic school. In more details focus this thesis on the problem of gambling, its murmurs, causations and possibilities of detoxification. At the close of this thesis is situated the actual state evaluation of gambling in the Czech Republic. The practical part attend to actual state of gambling on the second grade of basic schools. The main part theoretical parts concentrates on questionnaire evaluation, shows differences between big town, small town and a village. This practical part contains also statistical calculations.

Correlated GMM Logistic Regression Models with Time-Dependent Covariates and Valid Estimating Equations

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: When analyzing longitudinal data it is essential to account both for the correlation inherent from the repeated measures of the responses as well as the correlation realized on account of the feedback created between the responses at a particular time and the predictors at other times. A generalized method of moments (GMM) for estimating the coefficients in longitudinal data is presented. The appropriate and valid estimating equations associated with the time-dependent covariates are identified, thus providing substantial gains in efficiency over generalized estimating equations (GEE) with the independent working correlation. Identifying the estimating equations for computation is of utmost importance. This paper provides a technique for identifying the relevant estimating equations through a general method of moments. I develop an approach that makes use of all the valid estimating equations necessary with each time-dependent and time-independent covariate. Moreover, my approach does not assume that feedback is always present over time, or present at the same degree. I fit the GMM correlated logistic regression model in SAS with PROC IML. I examine two datasets for illustrative purposes. I look at rehospitalization in a Medicare database. I revisit data regarding the relationship between the body mass index and future morbidity among children in the Philippines. These datasets allow us to compare my results with some earlier methods of analyses. / Dissertation/Thesis / Arizona Medicare Data on Rehospitalization / Philippine Data on Children's Morbidity / M.S.
